1. Has to be a Tokai Thunderbird copy or the P-bass-alike "Hard Puncher".
2.
IMO, youve got to be able to emulate JEs playing to warrant owning a Buzz. Id hate to see some bloke with a black Buzz round his neck playing some root fifth pattern, or even worse.......playing Cant Get Enough of Your Love. Then again, I am biaised, John is my demi god and the reason I play. Im afraid, if you own a Buzz, you need a smallish rig to go with it:
Jeez, is that your rig? Does it blow women's clothes off during gigs??!!
3. Is your Warwick passive or active? Just wondered, as I have the Corvette $$ & it's sound is huge, both on top and bottom end. No nasty sounds at all. If however, you must have a jazz, go for the MIJ Geddy Lee signature model. Played mine in anger for the first time today at a gig & it sounded massive! Beautiful rich and rounded sound. MIM jazz basses are nice to play touch-wise, but the new updated pickups seem very low in output and uneven across the strings.
4. The real surprise was the black & white MIM Precision tucked around the corner with the 2nd hand amps. Mega sound and clout. The other one I liked was the black Status shark with the East-esque preamp & the badly re-fitted jack socket. Anyone tried the Sandberg California they have there? I loved that one - Very tempted to buy!
5. I played the original ATK four stringer many years ago at a friend's shop & found it to be a great funk & slap bass... Played one of the current ones a few weeks back & it was just as great. Feels like a lot of bass for the money! They seem to be Ibanez's answer to the Stingray but feel a lot more lithe and energetic. Go for the natural maple one - Seriously cool looking bass!
6.
OTPJ, the strings were deader than a very dead thing on that bass - I had a go on it on Sunday am. Struck me that with a new set it would be the mutt's
Yes, Dave's slipping a bit there... I don't know if you tried the JayDee as well, but that's in dire need of some TLC as well. Certainly didn't inspire me to buy either of them! If I ever open a bass shop, all used basses will be set up and have clean strings before they go on sale!
7. Hey Ped, was just looking at the pickup positioning on your new Vigier... The front pup is in the sweet spot, same as on my Corvette $$ - Must have a helluva punch & massive sustain!
8. Hi Pete, I found the stock pickups on my MIM Jazz V were very weak & the output was uneven, but my Geddy Lee has the USA vintage pickups, so more noise about them, but what a sound! Wouldn't change them for the world! Rich.
9. Sound Control in Derby & Hockley, Nottingham... Also The Music Inn in Nottingham... There's quite a good plce in Mansfield as well, the Rockbox?
10. Presoulnation, I played a 4-string Sandberg California at Electro yesterday - Fantastic sounding bass & awsome preamp as well! It'll be well worth waiting for, methinks!
11.
This hasn't helped my ASAT GAS at all, you know... I really fancy a solid one, mind you. I should've bought the last one I played. It was excellent. Still wouldn't mind a comparison with a Warwick $$ though.
No problem, Lfalx... If you get hold of one, bring it round by all means and compare it to my $$
12. My father is going over to the States again in the spring, so I may ask him to bring back something. Otherwise, I have plenty of contacts in the US, so I may ask someone to send me something from the guitar center. A Fender Deluxe for the price of a standard... That's tempting!
13. I think Dub_Junkie has one of these in a lovely cherry burst. Fantastic looking bass. If it plays anything like the solid one I played a few weeks ago, I'll bet it's a stunner!
14. Love those JP basses - Quite the collection you have there
15. Both MIM & MIJ are great basses. The MIM is a very fast and well made instrument these days & the MIJ moreso. If you can stretch to it, save up for a MIJ Geddy Lee. The gloss finish (even slimmer than usual) neck is astounding. Strangely, I've played 3 USA jazzes this past week & they all feel inferior to the other two. A much bigger effort to play IMO Definitely not worth the extra outlay.
16. WaterOfTyne, shall we send you some links for nice trumpets, then?
17. Have you thought of getting the "proper" Hofner one? I've got the Contemporary series one & only paid £300 for it, instead of the £500 list price. If you want the contact, PM me
18. Yes, I was looking at that Energy artist this morning... Looks lovely for the money, especially as it has a new Graphite neck on it, too!

20. Fender MIM Jazz - Thinner neck than the USA and often better finished as well. The Deluxe in candy apple red looks nice with the active circuit.
21. Hey P, Played a Lakland DJ at Electro the other day & wasn't particularly impressed. It was very heavy & awkward to play, but that could have just been the setup and the inordinately heavy strings! The sound was very flat and dull, and that was through a MarkBass amp as well. I know a lot of people rave about them, so there must be some lovely ones around. On the other hand, once you've set up a Geddy Jazz how you like it, you won't be able to put it down! Mine is absolutely stunning. Everyone says it's the best bass Fender currently makes. The Bongo 5HH sounds interesting, too. I've been fancying a Bongo myself for a while - Maybe the 4-stringer with the chrome orange paintjob - Nice!
22. Looks quite nice & simple. New retail is £149, but I've seen some this morning on the web for as little as £119. If it's a used one you're looking at, maybe £80 if it's in lovely order, but if it's a bit battle damaged, maybe £50-60?
23. Having had one, I'd buy a MIM Jazz V. Lovely quality, great sound & you'll save shed load of cash, too! Played a few USA jazzes over the past few days & there's just something about them that doesn't quite fit (me) - Perhaps it's that my CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz's neck is so much thinner, but they just sound and feel 'wrong'. Curiously, after a visit to Sound Control in Leeds yesterday, playing both Jazzes & Precisions - USA S1's, Highway One's & Mexican Standards - the bass that shone through in the store was a 'lowly' MIM Precision! It had fantastic finish & felt lovely to the touch. I was actually disappointed with the USA necks, especially the S! jazz with the maple board. It felt far too thick & half finished! Is the American quality control slipping?
