I currently do not have piece of earthenware to urinate in. However, I'll reiterate they are great basses....so £200 is a great price for anyone. A mate's put a video on YouTube of me playing mine in our band about 18-19 years ago (click here if interested), and I thought it sounded great even considering it's recorded on a camcorder.
It does sound good!! Very tight band as well... brings back too many memories of that clothingly challenged 80's/90's era for comfort though
Did Wal ever make a 6 string, I'm sure I saw one once in a shop called the Embassy in Mansfield.
Yes, IIRC the first one was made in the late 80's or very early 90's and is owned by a lovely chap called Tony Lewis who plays in a band called The Progs...
By older Pro models, do you mean 70's/early 80's or what mate? Do the late 80's Pro models have that funky fliter thing? If not, are they easy to get hold of and install?
Hi Jamie, It's not an exact science, but it goes something like this: The older Pro models started production around 1978 and continued until about 1981-2. The Custom models - with mahogany core bodies & multi-laminate facings, custom electronics and slimmed down headstock - appeared around 1982. But there are some hybrid models out there that have the old ash body and paddle shaped headstock but are fitted with the custom electronics.. The late 80's/early 90's Pro models vary; some have the custom electronics, some were completely passive and some had series/parallel switching that most other Wals were never fitted with.. So this particular batch is not easy to categorise. The custom electronics as a product in it's own right is almost impossible to get hold of and instal, as Wals have been out of production for at least 2 years now, hence the reason that s/h prices shot up! But the good news is that a deal appears to be close to completion whereby production is going to start up again under the control of one of the old Wal production team..

Jamie The older Pro models didn't have the filter based electronics that the Customs have and I suspect the tone you're hearing on 'Mystery to Me' is that of a Custom model.. I'd agree with Warwickhunt that Wals have a very unique tone and certainly, they're a long way away from a Fender tonally. But, they do things that most basses just can't and that's what's so exciting about them IMO. The older pro models (all 4 string) were made mainly of ash and can approximate a Fender tone, especially a P Bass. Hope that helps.. Nik
I almost PM'd you first Nik, but I have dropped you in it too much recently and to have it that nearby would break my heart Wasn't sure of the true style. They had it up as Pro2E, which I think was from the bloke who traded it (!!!???) who I believe may have had it from new. If Custom has a belly contour & Pro's have a flat body / no contours, then it was more likely a Custom. It had the smaller headstock like my Pro with the twin string retainer for the A & D strings (again like mine originally), rather than the 4 string retainer that Pete replaced it with when he converted mine I was -|[sup]this[/sup]|- close to hammering a card yesterday, it really did play so beautifully
Sounds like it's a Custom from that description.. Unusual colour though. Funnily enough, my Pro2e that I bought from Gwilym in 2005, was found by Gwil in GAK in exactly the same manner as this one?? I think even you with a cunning plan to hatch yet more cunning plans on a cunning day in cunning town, would have found it difficult to get that one through the door at WalMan Towers, Al! Next time something like this happens, which of course it won't now, let's go halves on the bass (and halves on the pain!)... Mike: I'll look for you on facebook in a minute...
All's good here, Nik! Thanks. I trust the same for you. Yes, what a lovely and different Wal. Can't say I didn't think about it myself. If it wasn't for good ole Chris Franklin, we'd all be thinking doomsday about Wal. And it looks like I may be toward the head of the pack for a new one, accoring to Chris! Any idea where Chris F. & Trevor are posting now?
Glad to hear it Mike! Not sure about Chris & Trev, though Trev is on Facebook these days... To be honest, I hadn't notcied that they weren't on the Wal forum any more? Are you on Facebook yet; I am but I really don't like or use it much... Nik
I'd also like to see some photos.
+1 Hi Mike, How's things - hope all's well with you? Good to see we've still got a bit of interesting Wal action occuring on this side of the pond! It was only down the road from me so I was very, very tempted to go and have a look today. Seems to be some very good news coming through the Wal forum about the future of the Wal brand which has got to be good news for everyone, especially Pete... Nik
Thanks for the info, top man. Been looking for a nice Wal for quite a long time so went & had a good play on it today, its now mine, thanks again. Inside the back plate it's dated 1982 & sighned by 'Fish' (Pete Stevens). One happy Wal'er.
Congratulations! It must be a transition model?? If it's got the Pro2e body & headstock but has the Custom electronics, then it might turn out to be a very interesting find!!

Nice sounding and very loud but as Kiwi said very coloured, making the basses sound the same. Peavey T-Max vs Gallien Krueger 700 RB
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs
Nik for what its worth, both my Burmans and my V8 have no problems articulating the B string on my Smith 5. I think Peavey amps tend generally to be fairly coloured and its up to the individual to decide whether that colouring is to their taste or not. As you're already aware I had a pair of GK combos for a long while and I would still be playing them if they hadn't weighed as much as they did. I think the GK stuff is fairly aggressive sounding which, if you have a soft sounding bass like a Smith or a Peavey Grind, can be a good thing. As far as sustain goes, I think it depends on the bass, the venue and how loud your amp is. I could stand with my Pedulla Pentabuzz next to the GK combo and the bass would feedback ever so gently when I played meaning I got oodles of sustain at stage monitoring volumes. I think with valves, you get a little more compression and the transients are less obvious. It might also be that you have a gentle feedback effect with your bass at certain frequencies when the amp is loud enough perhaps?
Hi CK Good to hear from you and thanks for those thoughts.. It does get interesting doesn't it when you mix different basses with different amps & cabs.. And I hadn't even considered the feedback possibility? I do like the GK sound but I also quite like the Peavey sound too. I think I'm beginning to realise though that whilst I've played lots and lots of different basses in my time, my experience of amps is much more limited.. At the next Bash I'm going to spend a bit more time investigating the rigs that people bring more than the basses. Nik -

Hi Folks, Well, I thought I was getting on fine with my Gallien Krueger 700 RB and an SWR Triad; I liked the sound, the amp is ultra-simple and easy to use plus the band were happy with my sound too (which makes for an easier life....). But then I got greedy and bought an SWR 210 from dmz, having decided for some wierd GAS induced reason that I wanted to run the Triad with the 210 occasionally.. Trouble is, the GK 700 will only cope with a 4 ohm load and both the SWR cabs together makes for a 2 ohm load! So, when Bottomfeed's Peavey T-Max came up for sale recently I decided to go for that and sell the GK 700 (even managed to do it without losing any money too which was a bonus ). The T-Max runs at 350 watts at 4 ohms and 500 watts at 2 ohms and it has a tube pre-amp and a solid state pre-amp, which can be used seperately or together, which seemed like a good idea to me at the time. Anyway, this weekend I had a Friday and a Saturday gig to use the T-Max in anger for the first time and at Friday's gig, I was having real problems with the sound and returned home a bit miserable thinking maybe I'd made a big mistake going for the T-Max! But looking back, I realised that I'd run the amp in dual-channel mode for the whole gig, combining the tube and the solid state pre-amps. And to make matters worse, I'd also used the tube simulator setting on my Zoom B2 throughout (which I always used to warm the tone up a bit with the GK 700), so no wonder it sounded like overkill at the gig! So, yesterday afternoon, I set all the gear up in the garage and did a bit of testing at gig volume (which seemed to entertain the neighbours a bit ) and what I finally worked out after almost two hours was that the following set-up sounded really good: Roscoe Beck V -> Boss TU2 tuner -> Peavey T-Max Tube pre-amp -> T-Max Fx loop to DBX MC6 compressor happily, the gig last night went really well and the sound was great with lots of compliments coming my way from the band, so that must be a good sign! Another bonus was that I was able to dispense with my pedal board and all the extra cables all over the floor making my setting up time much quicker. And I was able to use the solid state preamp setting with my BC Rich Eagle on a couple of numbers and balance the volumes accordingly, as the Eagle has a much higher output than the Roscoe Beck! On the down side, I did notice that the GK 700 seems to articulate the low frequencies of a B string better than the T-Max, so I had to fiddle with the e.q. to get that as good as possible from the T-Max.. And I think that with the valve pre-amp, there is more sustain, so I'm going to have to play a bit with the DBX to get the balance right there.. But overall, I think I'm now a 'valve convert' and that that maybe valves really are much better for bass.. What do you think?? Nik P.S. I haven't even used the 210 with it yet, so I've still got that to look forward to..
Got to the end of the night & got chatting to a few people who'd not seen us before. "Do you do this for a living?" she says. "Sadly no" I reply. "Still trying?" "Probably given up on even that" says I "It's just for enjoyment and to stop me turning up at the office one day with a pump action shotgun" "Been together long?" [Thinks]Bu99er!!{/Thinks] & I have to admit that I have been playing with the drummer so long we most certainly started out before any of them were thought of So one more next Friday, then the summer layoff until mid Sept. I believe I may go quietly mad in the meantime!!!
Hi Al, That little edit of your post-gig conversations made me laugh, but it also sounded painfully familiar... Shall we have that pint soon and get some therapy in quickly so you can keep the pump action shotgun at bay? Nik
Good one last night (Friday) and hopefully tonight will be as well. I'm hoping the sound guy will surreptitiously record it so I can have a go at mixing the current twin guitar line up. Friday at the Crown in LA was good. Only reopened fairly recently, but there was a good responsive crowd there all night. We started the first set and sound guy was looking confused as he was getting no signal from me, and I was sure I had run the cable. Turned out in the break that I had forgotten to plug it into the MB combo. DOH!! Didn't really matter though. It was on 9 o'clock input and same output with the tone pretty much flat, but I was barely tickling the bass and it was thundering out. That combo is so good. Light, loud, and a great tone that easily holds its own in a classic rock covers outfit. Fitted the PA feed in the break and turned the master down AGAIN, and SG was still muttering at the end that he had been mixing up to me A couple of alien abduction moments for each of us, in particular vocalist starting a second verse early over the verse intro (that's the same as the verse anyway - can't remember what now ). Guitarist, drummer & I just smiled at each other & dropped a line from the verse. I'm sure no one noticed at all A couple of encores and some nice compliments after - always help to bring the evening to a merry close, even if we do have to pack away & hump the gear out & home. Roll on The Fountain in Chichester South Street tonight (19 Jul)
Wish I'd been there for that Al ! Sounds like a good gig and hopefully The Fountain will have been a good one as well? I would have made it along to The Crown as I'm always keen to see you guys play and it would be nice to see what they've done to the place with the refurb.. But I had a couple of gigs myself; one at The Kings Head in Burgess Hill on Friday and a private party, Saturday night in Hove.. It was my first 2 gigs with the Peavey T-max and I've got to admit, I was worried after Friday's gig because i couldn't get my sound right at all.. But I spent a bit of time Saturday afternoon sussing it out and as a result, had a great sound last night! Amazing how different using a tube pre-amp is to solid state?
Ive trie the ebs one twice now and was totally unimpressed as it seemed to do nothing much, i was after a life changing experience for a 100 notes and i didnt get it. Recommendations please..........
DBX MC 6 Don't see them very often and they're not very well known. As a result, when they do come up on Ebay, you can pick them up for £20-30.. Great little unit; much better than the Boss stompbox I had and much better than the Trace Elliott SMX dual compressor that I sold to Ped last year.. The circuitry is based on the DBX 160.
