Now SOLD - thanks for looking Hi Folks I'm selling a set of Fender style 4-in-line open gear chrome Tuners which I bought a month or so ago here on Basschat to upgrade my son's Encore bass, but they were too big for the headstock, so I haven't been able to use them. They're in perfect working order and certainly feel well-made and look the part, but I honestly can't say what their actual pedigree is. Please note that I don't have the 16 fixing screws for them (which is how they came to me) but the screws can be sourced quite easily and cheaply on Ebay amongst other places.. Looking for £10.00 plus p&p which should be approx £3 - £4.. Any questions, please ask here or PM me. Thanks for looking, Nik

SOLD Hi Folks Here for sale, a Fender 5-string Chrome Bridge for sale which I bought a year or so ago off Ebay, but never got around to using. As you can see, it's still in it's original packaging and is completely unused, so is in excellent condition. String spacing on this is approx 17.5-18mm. I'm looking for £10.00 for the bridge and I expect postage to be about £3 - £4, though of course, if you live near to me in Littlehampton West Sussex, you'd be very welcome to come and collect. If you have any questions, please ask here or send me a PM. Thanks for looking, Nik

Just bought some pick ups from Mel. Great communications, cool packaging and very easy to deal with throughout. Whole transaction went very smoothly... Pick ups really good too! Am very happy to highly recommend Mel to one and all here on BASSCHAT. Thanks Mel. Nik

Feee BUMP for some of these valves.. I was lucky to try some of them out recently and they're really good - much better than the stock valves I had in my amp and pre-amp before. Especially the 1965 Millard, which sounded great in my Hughes & Kettner amp. I opted for the Sylvania in the end but only because the difference between it and the Millard was quite marginal, and the Sylvania was that much cheaper. Otherwise.. Anyway, great gear and you can't go wrong when dealing with Gareth, who's always a pleasure to deal with.

Just bought Gav's Korg Kasoscillator for use at work with the autistic kids that come to our Youth Club and After School Clubs.. Great piece of kit, which we'll put to really good use, so thanks for that Gav! Just to add that Gav gave us a reduced price on the Korg as it's going to be used for charitable purposes.. That, plus super fast delivery and great communications throughout made the whole process an absolute pleasure. Gav's a real gent to deal with and a credit to the BASSCHAT community!

Hi Folks, I just bought a lovely old Sylvania valve from Gareth. In the process, Gareth was kind enough to post me 5 different valves to try before I picked the Sylvania, including a 1965 Millard worth £40.. Not only that, back at the South East Bass Bash last September, Gareth did a set up on my Levinson Blade as a favour.. Where else could you find that kind of help and trust but from here on BASSCHAT and from people like Gareth? So rest assured that you can deal with Gareth in absolute confidence, knowing you're in safe hands in terms of the quality of the gear he sells and trades, and in terms of the way he treats everybody! Thanks Gareth; really, really appreciate it! Nik
You know it's a funny thing, but I've known about the Roscoe Beck for about 10 years and it's only really now - with immaculate timing - that I think of it as a Jazz! I'd always seen it as a sort of half-way house between Jazz and Precision, the best-of-both-worlds Fender (which to be honest, it is). This had been both reinforced by its looks, which to my eye are more Precision than Jazz, and its reputation. But yes, having played it several times now, Michael's spot on, this is a - possibly the - 'super Jazz' It certainly does a lot more than Jazz Bass, but that's where the core tone is centred, and all other tones are either side of that. I must admit part of me wants to stick on some La Bella Jamersons and check out the neck PUP in series to see just how vintage a Precision tone I can get, but of course the problem with doing that is that I'm likely to lose some of the very versatility that I bought the bass for (although even as I write I'm thinking about it some more....). So yes, Super Jazz is about right
I think you're spot-on with this assessment Chris.. I've had 3 Roscoe Beck 5 strings and I felt they were more of a Jazz bass than a P bass.. Great nonetheless in so many ways, but still , ultimately, its more of a Jazz bass tonal palette. -

Just bought some Pro Steel strings from Paul which went really smoothly and I'm very happy with the strings.. As it says above really; you can deal with confidence with the fretmeister! Thanks Paul..

BUMP for a very nicely priced and well spec'd P bass! Goes without saying that Chris is always a pleasure to deal with and what's more, after this sale, he's almost certainly going to be on Mastermind this year with his specialist subject being 'Buying & selling P Basses on Basschat'! So if he says it's a good 'un, it's definitely a good 'un..!

Just received a set of 4 Fender style tuners from Richard which are perfect! Even more so considering the fact that I bought them from Richard after he saw my post about which tuning pegs to get for a short scale bass.. Suffice to say, he's definitely a very genuine person to deal with and yet another Basschatter I'd highly recommend to others here on the Forum! Thanks Rich
I run a valve LDC mic for vocal recording which has just been upgraded with a Sylvania 12ax7 from the for sale section here (thanks again Gareth), and you really tell the difference between tubes with this. The stock tube was nice but a just a little brittle and 2 dimensional. The Sylvania has a nice bold open sound with lovely depth and detail (American sounding).
+1 I'm just trying out a few different valves courtesy of Gareth also, and there is a significant difference between the ones he's just sent me and the two i already had - i.e. a Sovtek and a Ruby (I think that's what it is? The Sylvania 12ax7 gives a fabulous tone in my Daniel D turbo-booster pre-amp pedal compared to all the others, which include Mullards and Brimars, though the Brimar comes a very close second for me. The Sovtek and Ruby sound less full and rich to my ears and break up too easily for my taste. The Mullards are very warm sounding and the Brimars quite similar to them IMO.. Though I prefer the Brimar. Until this week, I really hadn't any experience of this, but having now tried out a variety of different valves, I'm absolutely convinced it's worth checking out as many different ones as you can to enhance and improve your tone..

Thanks for the replies chaps.. And yes BetaFunk, it's a 30" scale Encore with a chunky P Bass style neck. From what you're saying, it'd appear I've got quite a lot of options then. I quite fancy some traditional Fender style tuners on it I think to keep it as authentic as possible.

Hi Folks Just wondered if anyone has ever replaced the stock tuning pegs on a cheap short scale bass with a better quality set, and if so, what would you recommend? I have an old Encore short scale P bass that i bought for my son to learn on, but the tuning pegs (enclosed rectangular shape style) don't work well at all and the bass doesn't stay in tune.. With a smaller headstock, I'm assuming that you have to be careful about the size of any potential replacements, which must limit options?? As the bass only cost £35, I don't want to spend too much on it, but I think it's an upgrade that would help a lot. So any suggestions would be welcome.. Thanks for looking as ever! Nik
