I would have pounced on this like a hungry lion had it been the 5 string version.

I had the 5 string version of this model about 15 years ago, bought direct from Bernie Goodfellow.. I can still remember him fitting the Aguilar pre in it and setting it up for me.

It had a great sound - very Marcus Miller in some respects, but it was good for lots of different styles of music. IIRC, I only sold it to upgrade to a Fender Roscoe Beck V.

This looks like an absolute bargain to me btw, and Jay's a great person to deal with!

    GLWTS 👍😊

  2. Hi Folks,

It's my pleasure to start a feedback thread here for Jack, aka @jackfromnpt, who drove all the way from Wales to West London yesterday, to buy my Fender Classic 50s P Bass.

The deal took a while to come together as Jack had to sell a bass first, and then we had to work through all the logistics (as I wasn't keen on posting), but we got there in the end I'm pleased to say.

Throughout, Jack's comms were excellent and he was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. All in all, it was a very easy and pleasant transaction.

Suffice to say that you can deal with Jack in complete confidence Folks, and I'm more than happy to recommend him to one and all here on the Forum!

As we met at my workplace, there wasn't really much time for us to sit and have the customary Basschat chat about all things bass, which was a real shame... But I've no doubt that, if we had of done, we'd have had a great conversation.

Having said that though, even in that very short space of time, I think we managed to cram in a few interesting topics - basses, Interpol's biggest ever gig in Mexico, photography and cameras, The Mumbles, etc, etc..  😁

So, thanks again Jack; it was great to meet you and I really do hope you enjoy the bass! 👍

    Cheers

These are so ridiculously underrated - it’s only the Mk1 Bart’s I think that have an unfairly bad rep - I’ve played this and the 4 string 44-01 and they feel and sound absolutely class, I hate to use the term but it is a proper “jazz bass on steroids” (excuse me whilst I cringe myself inside out). The East preamp in it will sound ridiculous - as you know I’ve got my eye on this!! 😃

There was a time a few years back when 5 string basses of this quality, with a John East pre fitted, were about £250 more than the current asking price and they sold within a few days, or a week at best if being listed.

    Strange times indeed... 🤔

    GLWTS 👍

  4. Hi Folks,

Just bought a speakon to speakon cable from Mike.

The cable's perfect, Mike's comms are excellent and this deal couldn't have been smoother (and easier) .

Highly recommended! Deal with in confidence...

Thanks Mike and here's to the next one! 👍😊

    Cheers

Just a really touching and evocative thing you’ve made Cat. I’m sure many of us on here remember that fierce love of the music  of our youth, and how it still binds us. Spirits on tonight.

    +1

What a fantastic, courageous and inspiring project @Cat Burrito!

    Sincere 👏👏👏 to all involved.

As @Wotcher2 said so eloquently, your film is a beautiful testament to the fierce love of the music we have when growing up, which inspired us to start playing instruments and starting our own bands.

Really, loved it - thank you!

And the other thing I really love about your film, is the connection it draws so strongly between goth music and folk music - that's really powerful! (I hope that makes sense btw..)

Anyway, thanks for sharing.. It's a really great piece of work! 👍😊

  6. Great story @northstreet - and one many of us on here can relate to....

My golden jubilee will be next year and now you've mentioned it, it's made me think about how I'd like to celebrate it...?? 🤔

Meanwhile, whilst pondering that, I just wanted to comment on the three musicians you've mentioned as your inspiration, Macca,  Entwistle and Stevie Wonder - what an incredible trio they are...!

Personally, I love Macca and Entwistle's bass playing and they rightly get a lot of praise (and someimes flak) for it..

But in some ways, I have even more admiration for Stevie Wonder, who IMHO, is one of the best bass players, and best bassline composers, of the last 50+ years or so.... His run of albums in the 1970s was just astonishing and are full of incredible basslines...

Anyway, just to say I hope you enjoy your next few gigging years, and thanks for sharing your story !

    • Thanks 1
  7. Oh my goodness - I've only just heard this news about Nick.

Like many others here , I had absolutely no idea about his battle with cancer, which yet again, has taken one of the good ones far too soon.

I am truly shocked and saddened...

Despite never buying and selling basses from each other, I had plenty of comms with Nick over the last 18 years or so, which were always a pleasure...

He was a gentleman through and through and his kindness was only marginally secondary to his love of music and basses, I'd say.

Sending my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

RIP Nick - you are, already, very much missed!  😥

    Hi Nik.

I just find his playing way more than is needed, and it leaves me a bit cold. It's all horses for courses, naturally enough. I don't profess to be the arbiter in any such discussion (none of us holds that distinction). I'm not much of a fan of any player that feels the need to draw attention to themselves, be they a YouTuber or virtuoso. Neither of them do stuff that I enjoy.

I can't do much of what they do, but then I don't want to. I appreciate technique, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't float my boat.

    That's totally cool, Steve...

We're all entitled to like what we like, play how we like and not like, etc, etc..

IMHO, we're lucky there's so much great music and great players to enjoy and be inspired by.

  9. Welcome to Basschat, Dudley... 😊

And best of luck with the sale!

Having just bought one of these, I can testify to how amazing they sound - as I'm sure @rambamwill, who I bought mine from.

Your description of the amp says it all really, but I'd just add how impressed I am with the 5 way voicing switch - it's such a useful facility to have if you want to make significant tonal changes on the fly , mid-gig, mid-rehearsal as it were....

This also has the very cool looking Mesa sleeve, which makes it even more of a bargain price IMHO.

Anyway, GLWTS as I said... 👍

John Entwistle. The bass equivalent of Yngwie Malmsteen.

Not sure I get that reference, Steve.. 🤔

There's been a lot of mention in this thread about how a bass players primary role is to 'play (or support) the song' , which is an assertion I pretty much agree with.

But equally, as a listening, creative musician, you also have to 'play the band' as well...

Only my opinion of course, but I think Entwistle's style and approach to bass playing and creating bass lines, played the band context he was in  perfectly.

His playing next to Keith Moon's, created something different, something that set The Who apart from other bands.. Not dissimilar to JPJ and John Bonham in Led Zep, for example.

In both cases, those two rhythm sections had a unique approach that elevated the band's music beyond the norm, and beyond others - hence why we still talk about them today.

Doesn’t mean we all have to like it, but I personally respect that level of creativity and ambition.

On a similar note, I'm a huge fan of James Jamerson's playing. And his approach was something different as well - for example, the bass line on 'What's Going On' is a masterclass to me...

But I think it's fair to say that what he played on that song isn't what 99% of other bass players would have played on that it..

Yet, it's (quite rightly) celebrated as a work of bass playing genius...

Just my 2p worth of course. And there are loads of renowned bass players who 'I don't get', or like, or care for.

But what I would say is that there's always something you can learn from those people that helps improve your own playing, or musical creativity, even just a little ...

This is often a BC way of saying "keep it simple cos that's the only way to do it that isn't blatant showing off!"

    😁

I mean, there's all sorts of songs - Waterfront with its 1 note (though Simple Minds did far more complex stuff too), Rhythm Stick, School Days... But there seems to be lots of folks who are instantly turned off if music is at all complicated (Rhythm Stick excepted!) - this is why Mr Sheeran and Take That are multi-millionaires and Mörglbl are at best niche despite being completely awesome musicians.

In the UK there's a weird sort of anti-intellectual thang going on; when I was a kid you should have heard the jeering from my 13 year old classmates when they discovered I'd read  both the Iliad and the Odyssey. If a red-top newspaper ever reports anything scientific it's always prefaced by "Boffins have discovered", as if Boffins are a different species from yer average Joe and somehow to be pitied. I mean why would you tinker about with all this cleverness and not be watching the footie or enjoying the X Factor? The only sorts of knowledge that are acceptable under this scenario are an ability to recite every FA cup winner since 1921 or the exact exhaust valve clearance of a 1968 Ford Anglia. That's proper bloke stuff innit, not wishy-washy wet swot stuff! I blame The Beano...

    Very true!

What's that old British saying about 'not getting ideas above your station!'

  12. Just bought a rack case from @Lukasz Chyla, which was very fairly priced and arrived almost before you could say 'Special Delivery'!

Super fast comms too from Lukasz, so all round, a great experience.

So, I'm more than happy to highly recommended Lukasz to one and all here on Basschat... 👍😊

Thanks again Lukasz, and here's to the next one!

    Cheers
