  1. Had the pleasure of meeting @sambecker1, aka Sam, this afternoon and can only endorse what Richard has said above about buying and selling with Sam with absolute confidence!

Sam bought the Tokai Hardpuncher I was selling and I've got to say, his comms throughout everything this week have been great. What's more, he's super friendly, easy to deal with and is clearly a very talented bass player /musician.

In short, he's a great addition to the Basschat community!

Thanks Sam, it was really good to meet you and I hope you enjoy the bass! 👍😊

    Cheers

  2. Hi Folks,

Do to ongoing, internal commentary on the interior spatial constraints we have here at Silverfoxnik Towers, I really would like to move this on now..

So here's a Saturday morning BUMP for this fantastic, lightweight Greenboy fEARful 15/6 cab, which sounds glorious - especially when used with my Mesa Carbine head that's also for sale here.

If anyone's interested in both the amp and the cab, then I'm sure a deal could be done on the price for both.

Thanks for looking and have a good weekend! 👍😊

  3. Hi Folks,

As already said, I really would like to move this on now, so here's a Saturday morning BUMP for this beautifully designed and engineered Mesa Carbine, which sounds glorious - especially with my  Greenboy fEARful 15/6 cab that's also for sale here.

If anyone's interested in both the amp and the cab, then I'm sure a deal could be done on the price for both.

Thanks for looking and have a good weekend! 👍😊

  4. What a beautiful piece of kit this is...

I seem to remember that @Chimikehad one of these back in the day, and he brought it to a mini West Sussex Bash that we had about 12 or 13 years ago and it sounded absolutely immense!!

A sound that literally terraformed the inside of your ears in new and fabulous ways...

If I was curating a Museum dedicated to iconic Bass gear,  this would be proudly sat on a special plinth as you walked into the 'Best of British' wing...

    GLWTS 👍😊

Well of course - can't argue with that but I was really thinking of the kitchen and bedroom level "never gonna make it" songwriters - not your "already made it" Jagger & Richards level. I've done it a only a couple of times doing FAWM but I've never managed to set up a semi regular thing with anyone else - to sit around with a pad and a couple of guitars - I've been open to it for years but my main musician friend was never open to any kind of input - I'd share 30s fragments or 2min demos- he only sent me finished songs where there was no point in commenting on anything as it was already too late - I don't think he wanted to expose himself to a situation where you'd see what he was made of creatively - I just thought he was too uptight and precious yet he was a great musician, singer and songwriter - he just didn't want to do it while anyone was watching... and I'm totally different in so many ways... I just wondered if it was even worth hunting the mythical song writing yeti but - it seems a few people here have had some experience of it.

In my experience, songwriting partnerships work when the people involved bring different skills,  experience, musical talents and personalities to the project.

And another important factor is that there's got to mutual respect and trust too, just like in any relationship, otherwise it won't work or last..

Isn't there's a semi-serious and funny (if it weren't so true) quote or saying out there somewhere about it 'being impossible to be a musician and an adult at the same time'...??

So when it comes to trying to find a songwriting partner you can work with, you've got to hope they're similar to you in terms of that emotional maturity /sensibility..

After all, it's quite a personal thing when you're writing music and words to share with the rest of the world!

  6. Hi Folks,

Just had the pleasure of selling a Maya Fretless to Brian, who is a pleasure to deal with and without doubt, one of Basschat's finest!

Everything was very straightforward forward with this transaction, as is always the case with Brian, including great comms, no hassle couriers, and fast payment.

    Highly, highly recommended! 👍👌

Thanks again Brian - I hope you enjoy the bass and here's to the next one. 😁

    Best wishes,

    Nik

For years I've limped along, increasingly less productively - working on my own as most people do and looking back I'm pretty pleased/positively amazed at  some of the songs that have either materialised quickly or I've managed to work them out like removing a splinter. I've often thought it would be great to have someone to collaborate with - someone who "gets it" (the desire to write well)/"gives a sh!t" (understand why the writing well matters so much) - but how many people actually find that - I wonder if it's a bit of yeti hunt looking for someone to write with. Even Lennon/McCartney wrote a lot separately but even getting someone else to cast an eye over something and give a seal of approval might make a difference worth having. What's your experience - that it's actually hard to put half a song into the hat and give someone else free reign - or that too many disagreements arise?

    Reality.

Some of the best songs ever written have come from songwriting partnerships.

     Cheers for the info nik.

My Yamaha pulser is 39mm nut but deep. I would have to try it to see how it feels in the hand.

On the stamping it’s just below the last fret on the fretboard.

I’ve a busy couple days but I’ll PM you.

That stamp is definitely not there on my bass.... See pictures on previous page.

Hey @silverfoxnik what is the width of the nut. 40 or 42?

I was looking for one of these so went on the tokai forum to gain experience. Tokai stamped the model number at the base of the fretboard. Does it say 80?
The bridge has been changed also.

    Hi @soulstar89

These Tokais have quite chunky necks. This is a quote from a Tokai forum that i found:

"They are solid, accurate, and well built P bass copies with old school thick necks and 7.25 radius."

A Google search just now said this:

The Tokai PB80 bass neck profile is described as a "vintage U profile" or a "deeper profile," which is characteristic of a 1950s-style Precision Bass. It is a maple neck that is on the larger side, though many players find it comfortable to play. The neck is also noted as being "slight cambered".

Nut width is. 43mm according to the same Google search.

    Does that help?

I've not taken the neck off to look at what's stamped on there bit could do if absolutely necessary...

And yes, the bridge has definitely been modded.

Where was it made please? And could we have headstock pic? Ta!

Apologies for being a bit dumb in my earlier reply.

So, yes, made in Japan, but as to which of the legendary factories, I don't know for sure.

However, a quick Google AI search gave this answer:

"Your Tokai PB80 bass was produced in the Tokai Gakki factory in Hamamatsu, Japan. This is the same factory where Tokai has made its highly regarded instruments since the 1970s."

    Cheers, Nik

  11. *** Now SOLD ***

    Hi Folks,

This is a bit of a feeler to be honest, but I'm thinking of moving on this fabulous Tokai Hardpuncher PB80 GS which, according to the online databases, was a 1979 / 1980 model.

These 'lawsuit' era Tokai P Basses are very highly regarded, as one quote I found on Talkbass said:

"... They were as good as the actual Fenders of that era, but more consistent. A Seventies Tokai is a legit vintage bass."

There's a lot of info out there on them for anyone interested:

    https://www.tokaiforum.com/threads/the-earliest-hard-puncher-basses.26472/page-2

    Price

I'd like £475 or near offer for it, and am not looking for trades at this time.

    Specs/Condition etc

Ash 1-piece body, maple neck, maple fingerboard and it's pretty much all 'stock' apart from what looks like a replacement, Gotoh style bridge.

As can be seen in the photos, it's most definitely had a life and been very well used, so it's not a case queen.

That said, the electrics need a bit of a clean and it could do with a restring... But, as it is, it plays really well; the frets/fingerboard are in good condition, the truss rod works as it should, and it sounds great - i.e.,  warm, fat, funky, rocky P bass tones and that nice zingy 'snap' you get from a maple neck! !  😁

Which brings me to it's weight ; according to my fairly un-scientific weighing method, it's 4.5 kg or 9.9 lbs. Not light I know, but as I've always liked ash-bodied basses, that sort of weight in a bass has never troubled me... YMMV of course.

    Provenance

One additional point of interest, this used to belong to the late, and much-missed, Nick Smith, aka 'Doctor_Bass', and as such, it has more than a little sentimental value to me. Nick was the last person to set it up by the way.

    Reason for sale

But I'm not really using it due to having too many other basses - a few of which get used all the time - hence why listing it here for sale. It's a player's bass, and really does need to used...

    Collection etc

Happy for anyone interested to come and test it out here in Potton, Central East Bedfordshire. Tea/coffee /Basschat chat in plentiful supply..

For many reasons, I do not want to post this.

But in terms of meeting up, I'd be happy to arrange something reasonably local to me (within 30-40 miles), or somewhere in and around North West London where I work.

Whatever - I'm sure something can be worked out if the need arises.

Any questions, please ask, and thanks for looking as always. 👍

    Cheers

    Nik

Haha, you don't know how long I was staring at this for yesterday, trying to figure out a way to make it work! I have my Barefaced 610 stack now, so have all my bases covered.

Plus, I'd have to buy an Orange amp to go with it .. even more cash I don't have.

Personally, I prefer the look of this cab with a black amp sitting on top, like in my photos above with the Mesa Carbine or Warwick Tubepath.

So there really wouldn't be a need to change your amp and spend any unnecessary cash. 😁

I was going to bring my '73 P bass, that I always post pictures of, because of it's really cool wear. Probably my '64 500/1 Hofner too (if it's ready, gone for neck reset) and my HW 4003 so people can see how good HW is

But I'm coming to meet everyone anyway

Very interested to see your HW 4003 @police squad

I've only ever heard good things about them...

  14. Hi Folks,

Due to the recent acquisition of a Mesa Diesel 115, this fantastic sounding Greenboy fEARful 15/6 lightweight, 8-ohm, neo cab is up for sale.

I'm looking for £325 or near offer for this orange beauty, which I think is a pretty reasonable price given the cost of a new Eminence 3015LF driver is around £250 at Blue Aran at the moment.

The cab is working perfectly, sounds amazing; great dispersion, crystal clear and punchy and can handle a lot of power.

    Background

I bought this in spring 2024 from @2x18, aka Will, for whom it was a combination of part self-build and part outsourced build. Here's what Will told me about the build, which I hope he won't mind me sharing:

    "Hi Nik

I have been trying to find info about my build but can't seem to find any -- I built it with all new recommended parts including a Pro built cabinet to exact spec I had made by "Speakerbuilder" that used to be on the forum. They also supplied the pro build crossover, Speakers were as recommended on the Green Boy site -- Brand new new Eminence 3015LF and the recommended neo HF unit.

Hope this helps you with the sale -- Its a really great cab!"

    Specs are :

    Height: 31" / 79 cms

    Width: 21" / 53 cms

    Depth: 16.5" / 42 cms

    Weight: approx. 46 lbs / 21 kgs

Power rating : 450 watts rms

    Cover: Roqsolid.

A Google AI search had this to say about the Greenboy Fearful 15/6:

"The Greenboy (fEARful) 15/6 is a popular DIY bass cabinet known for its high-fidelity, flat, and natural sound with powerful, tight low-end, clear mids, and the option for bright highs. Key features include its lightweight design (especially for the performance) and versatility, with some users noting it can even be used like a PA system for other sources. The 15/6 is a design you build yourself or purchase as a custom build, and it's often praised for its exceptional performance that rivals more expensive commercial cabinets."

Photos attached are a combination of mine and Will's from last year (thanks Will👍). Happy to do more if required.

    Reason for sale

Amazing as this cab is, it's almost too clean, transparent and hifi sounding for me, hence why I've bought a slightly heavier, old school Mesa 115 instead. And much as I'd like to keep the Greenboy, I don't have enough space due to living in a small cottage...

    Deal?

This cab pairs really well with my Mesa Carbine head that's also up for sale, so if anyone is interested in both items, I'd be happy to do a deal on a price for the two as a rig....

    Postage, collection etc

It's too big to post I think, so collection from Potton, east Central Bedfordshire, or a meet up anywhere between where I live and North West London is possible too, as I work in Ealing 2 or 3 days a week. I could also take this with me to the South East Bass Bash on Sunday 9th November if that helps..

Trials very welcome btw, with plenty of tea/coffee and Basschat chat thrown in..

Anyway questions, please ask and thanks for looking. 👍☺️

    Cheers

    Nik
