  1. For me (please note: as a beginner student of slapism) I think a common starting point is: Guitar: Tone=High / All PUs=Full Amp: Lows=Full / Mids=Half / Highs=Full / Limiter=On a lot Then tame it back from there as required. Action: Low Strings: Rounds Playing: It's all about control (same as any style), which is all about practice. 👍
  2. That looks just like the forest of dean. I live by there, see. 😁
  3. This ^^^^. After years of (occasionally) trying to bang out "forget me nots" (in private of course), I'm now trying to develop my own distinct fusion style, by shamelessly copying Jerry Preston. 😁 How could anybody not LOVE the first 30 seconds of this?: "Forget me nots" is still a disaster. 😪
  4. Ahh, that was nice. 👍 TBH, I've never felt particularly unnoticed or undervalued as a bass player, although it's a sentiment I've often seen expressed on here... sure there will be some in the audience whom probably don't know what sounds are coming out of which instrument, but that doesn't matter to me, or to them either, I doubt? 😊
  5. And when you do it, the "civilians" in the audience won't even comprehend the achievement - which is similar to riding a motorcycle and driving a car - at the same time! 😁
  6. Oooof, difficulty levels just went "turbo"! 😁
  7. I suppose it's "a very expansive question", with many possible answers depending on the ifs and buts. 😊 IMHO, learning somebody else's bass parts from hit records (accurately) is often a great learning experience in itself. If you're going to go on and cover certain songs in a band, then there's a huge possible checklist and/or flowchart could be filled out... What's best? Depends on the band!? Possible outcome:
  8. I have this awful vision of a modern-day Titanic movie... the band play on while the passengers are boarding the lifeboats, but they're playing a slightly wrong version of "sex on fire". 😓 ... no, actually they're probably playing it right - but it's still > 😓
  9. Great thread, and I totally agree about how lazy and/or hopeless some players can be. Don't say they ruined "Lip up fatty". Please no, not that one! 😁
  10. My Westy P sounds a bit like it, on full tone, with preamp pushed up high, and through headphones. I wonder is your action low enough? The basses in the clip all seem pretty darned low. 👍
  11. Running sans pickguard is overrated anyway. 👍
  12. I can understand that. 👍 I bought a Westfield P bass before xmas, for £60. Which arrived In what I'd have to say is "as-new" unplayed condition! What a bargain. But this "Vintage" J bass I picked up a few days ago - Wow! It's a lot more "2nd hand", but I've never had such a honky, funky, raspy thing in my life!! It's nowhere near as loud as the P bass, but what a sound! (and it's so slim in the neck). I'm so happy, I'm tempted to buy another one as a spare. 😁 VJ and Westy:
  13. I also want to know what's under there. Could be some smuggled blood diamonds or anything! 😁
  14. Thanks, I enjoyed that. 😊 The classical world of serious cover versions!
  15. I did not know about these secret spaces. 😁
  16. Keith Richards on Led Zep: "There's something a little hollow about it, you know?"
  17. This is exactly what I'm playing right now (but have switched to the P bass). C'mon, have a slap, Mr T. 😁
  18. Maybe I'll put some stickers on it! 👍 What I should do is sand the bugger down and Danish oil the body, but I'm having too much fun slapping the fosters out of it for now. 😁 edit: haha, when I type "fosters" the swear filter changes it to fosters. 😁 edit edit: Buggery is much more rude than just doing a wee. 😪
  19. That's kind of ya mate, but although I've only had the J for two days, that fake roadrash finish is really bothering me. And it needs a pickguard!
  20. That's lush Mr T. The white looks very nice! (I'd keep the black plate too, but there's nothing wrong with having a couple in different colours). 😎 I wouldn't have chosen the "battlefield" finish for my J, but second hand choices are more limited. So I now have a false P and a false J for less than 200 quid for the pair... just need some orange paint now!
  21. Is that one of those old fashioned paper thingies? A "book" or something? 😁 You wanna get over to the P bass thread with that.
