In fairness to BD, I had been after an Nordstrand Music Man type and it was out of stock on the web site. Suddenly, the status changed and I was able to order and get it a couple of days later. As has been said, the entire logistics business, in the UK, is in a state and this is just the manifestation of just that. I guess we just have to live with this random version of rationing.

I would look at the MIJ Squier in the classifieds (400 quid) and use that as your starting point. Importantly, the nut width is correct.

This will always be an unresolved argument, as it's entirely subjective. We all have our preferences and that's perfectly fine. It may be that people do, indeed, overplay at first. Maybe, when they find their own voice, they will play less - maybe more. We're all different.

Strange. I have only ever used 'bog standard' cables, as bought online, and used them without issue. If you really struggle, I can send you a spare one of mine that has always worked fine for me.

There was a spot where he'd dabbed on some black paint to hide a ding. The worst aspect was that the bottom E was just dead. New strings, nothing made a difference.

I always sum it up (in my own mind) as 'the best way to impress is not to try'.

I actually bought 3 of these basses. A sunburst '61, a white refin '62 (JE did it himself over sunburst) and a '53. The '61 was really not a good one! Still, it only cost £575.

I think I agree with you. I think the type of instrument you play also has a bearing. In my (old guard) simple way, I always think bass players are either Precision bass players, or Jazz bass players. By that, I mean that a bass that gives more definition (for want of a better expression) invites the player to play more notes. That's a massive generalisation, I accept, but I think there's a lot of truth in it. That's not to denigrate anybody at all. It's just what I've observed over the years. Additionally, people have their own definition of the role in the band and how it is achieved. Again, there is no right or wrong answer. It's entirely down to the individual.

I'm going to be flamed for this but there are two serial culprits (IMHO) .... many of NWR's bass lines with Wilko, and John Entwistle. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Norman Watt-Roy in the Blockheads etc but I find many of those Wilko bass lines too far too busy. I find the same with JE. I'm going to be in a minority of one, but the question was asked.

Absolutely. It's whether it's correct or not that matters. I was just giving a possible explanation for people to draw attention to it. For all I know, lefties may be the other way round. I posted a general question about the science of strings a while back, but we obviously don't have any string experts on here. Maybe I'll drop Rotosound a line and ask them.
