  1. Maybe it has to do with the context of the sentence. Here's some examples where one would be used over the other. "Who did you get as a singer in your new band?" , "I play bass and do background vocals", "Alright lads, we've got the instrument tracks recorded, let's put down the vocals." Man, the new singer in my band is a flaming *$@^&*(_*!!!"
  2. Every instrument has strengths and limitations. The upright bass has a long history of 4 strings. Leo, who made the first commercial bass chose 4. So much ground breaking and ground shaking music was made with a 4. I don't need more than 4. If you need 5 or 6 or 8 or 12 do what you're called to do. I think most professionals will have options in their quiver, but I still think the standard for all is a four.
  3. Boz Burrell was probably the first person whose playing struck me as being slightly different before I even played bass. I still enjoy his fretless playing when a Bad Company song pops up on the radio. RIP Boz.
  4. Good luck to you. Three great songs. Take Five shows you can play in odd time signatures. Autumn Leaves shows you can play slow with emotion, and All Blues shows you can play modes. What instrument?
  5. It's singer. As in "Who's singing this one?" Singer, not singest. I sing and play, not vocalise and play. The term is LSD, not LVD.
  6. So.....a post on Jeff Berlin turns into a slag on Americans? Shame on you! After my grand-dad said such nice things about your grand-mum in 1944.
  7. Berlin? "Ich bin ein Berliner!" I AM A JELLY DOUGHNUT! Oh wait.....that was Kennedy.
  8. Neck pickup full up, Bridge pickup off, Tone off. With flats. Round and warm.
  9. Have you seen the pedal section in a Sweetwater catalog? Pedals are here to stay.
  10. Makes me think of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach. Could it be some pop ditty inspired by Bach a la "Whiter Shade of Pale"?
  11. I play in a duo where I sing and play guitar. I also play bass and do bv in a 4 piece playing "red dirt" country (modern alternative country from Texas/Oklahoma). The singer who does some solo gigs called and wanted to use a duo at a bar-b-que place, but the guitarist didn't like the money offered so the singer asked me to back him on guitar. Did the gig, got more money than expected and free ribs. Singer called said he missed the bass, getting more money, so now the guitarist is in, it'll be a 3 piece for the next 3 gigs. Same money for me. So.....either he really missed the bass, or he likes the other guy better on guitar (he is good). I don't care. I'm getting money for nothin' and my ribs for free!
  12. I don't get why european bass players like to fosters and moan about the American presidents so much. Clean up your own house......oh wait, we sent a rep to improve the royal line. Things will get better.
  13. Never too old. Find a good teacher and learn to play songs that you love. Devote at least 1/2 hour /day. Teacher can help you to stay motivated. Enjoy the journey.
  14. Talkbass? Sounds too close to Basschat. Sue the bastards!
  15. Roger who? I seem to remember someone named Roger who used to hang around the great Keith Moon's band, but from all accounts Keith didn't particularly care for the guy. Good enough for me.
  16. Tell her you could quit the band and sell all the gear but then you'd be moping around the house and she wouldn't get her "alone time".
  17. I don't know about England, which from my perspective, had an inordinate number of Clive's and Trevor's and Ian's and Mick's, over here the old names like Frank and Paul and Joe and John and Richard and William aren't heard anymore amoung the young. There seems to be a plethora of Dylan's though.
  18. I see both sides. They want to do this gig and make some cash, however, if you're doing originals and trying to build a following, this will be a different band. They should go out under a different name for this one-off. Also, gear costs money. Who's going to take responsibility if your pa gets messed up? Wish them well for the gig and let them sort out their own gear.
  19. I agree. While Satch is technically unbelievable, it leaves me cold as did the whole shredder genre. I'll take heart over head any day. Blackmore's just giving his opinion, as I am. Maybe some feel the oposite. So be it. Different strokes...
  20. I played drums and did bv in a Waylon Jennings tribute 3 piece a few years back. Before I auditioned, I listened to a "best of" CD. Very sparce drums. Apparently, no other drummer auditioning was willing or able to play so simply so I got the gig. Was fun til I moved.
  21. Very nice. So sorry about your friend.
  22. Nice score, but why do you play with such a tiny drummer?
  23. When I lived in Austin, used to go to Ed's bass emporium. Also watched him close up on upright, gigging in a duo with a guitarist at a pastry shop. My wife and I were front and center and the only one's giving our undivided attention. He sat with us during break and couldn't have been nicer. Quite the class act and wonderful musician.
  24. Hate songs? No. I might hate particular renditions of songs, like a drunk girl who can't sing doing "Me and Bobbi McGee" , but it's not the song's fault. It's a great song when Kristofferson does the original. Any song can be made better. Take "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies. I don't like it, but listen to Wilson Pickitt's version. He transforms the song. A guy I played with once told me, you might not like playing a particular song, but you're being payed a dollar to play it. Actually, about 2.50, 40 songs a night- 100 bucks a gig. It's a job, I'm a pro......okay, semi-pro but I conduct myself like a pro. I'm there to make money so I can buy more cool gear.
