1. You will be fine with normal 3/4 strings jez. 102cm is not unusual. Enjoy :-)
2. Get it done. A good set up is essential IMO. Double bass is hard enough to play anyway. It's expensive, but worth it.
3. Yeh I guess the bands doing it for nothing think that it will lead torwards paid work. It won't, people don't want to pay for something that was free last year.
4. It's not a problem not getting paid for playing if no ones making any money (eg original band night in little pub). If it's a professional ticketed event I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be paid. I would rather rehearse for nothing than be exploited at a festival. It just makes it harder for every other tribute band if you do it for nothing whilst they try to negotiate a fair fee. If there's no expences then in real terms it will cost you.
5. Sounds like a move towards better work so I would go for it. I'm sure you have considered this, but just be careful that it's 100% sorted before you leave your old band. Perhaps try to do both in the short term till your settled in the new group. Good luck :-)
6. I love the full circle Jez. It's worth the price.
7.
Been and bought the Golden Strad from John (toddy) , have booked an appointment with Jan at leeds to see what he reccommends done , apart from the bridge as John mentioned in the ad, interesting playing it when i got home how much more tone it has than my CCB even with the knackered bridge and strings, cheers, Jez
Good work Jez. Jan does great work so im sure you will end up with a really nice bass. Enjoy! cheers Geoff
8. I tend not to change my basses settings on function band gigs. Just get one sound that works and stick with it. In fact my bass is almost always set the same way for all gigs. If you don't need a five I would just stick with what you have. Perhaps change the flats, but only if it doesn't work at a gig or rehearsal. Also other musos love P basses! Your title really describes an Fender... Versatile and Classic.

10. I'm going to try to come down. Sounds like a great event, I've always got time to check out basses :-)
11. I think it's more of a problem for the cab. You can't really bring a spare 410 :-)
12. I know what you mean Joe. I always tell them and they always do it. I've tried offering a cable with a mute but that confuses them even more.

20.
Hi all, Just a little clip of a song on a gig I played with singer/songwriter Ian parker at Manchester's 'Band on the Wall' in December 2010. I'm playing my Jack Casady Signature bass. Hope you enjoy it. Steve http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6BrNnB69v4
Hey Steve, great playing and I love the bass! Got to be one of the coolest bass guitars out there... Rigs not half bad either! hope you are having a great Christmas! cheers Geoff
21. Great buy this!
22. If you don't want to develop bow skills that's fine. However being able to more clearly hear the pitch of the note you are playing will help your intonation by making it easier to hear (and adjust) when you are out of tune. It also helps that the note continues to sound (pizz notes die quickly, more so than a fretless bass guitar). The aim of pactising intonation is to develop your ear and mussle memory, not bow skills. Of course if you actually want to use the bow then it makes sense to learn some technique. it's an amazing sound and IMO worth the effort. For me bowing helped to improve my intonation.
23. Wow. Great collection! Love the rob Allen!
24. Kevins a great musician who's really dedicated to playing bass. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a professional, reliable and talented bassist.
