1.
Give Jan a bell at Chapell Allerton Strings (North Leeds so not too far from you), he's always busy but always helpful
+1
2. If you focus on using the weight of the right arm, not using the actual power of the arm. You should be able leave the right hand thumb in contact with the side of the fingerboard almost the whole time. The thumb should only be resting, not pushing against the fingerboard. Also as already mentioned there is a turn in the wrist. . So it's this turn combined with the arm weight, not pulling your whole arm. The weight of the arm is also used on the other strings, but you obviously don't have a string to play back onto. Remember to keep your neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand relaxed. Hope this helps. Geoff
3.
I reckon having a luthier you can trust is such a big part of the whole db thing, you'll be happy having spent the cash in the end. Honest. Maybe try someone recommended on here?
Great advice. It's so convenient once you find a good one and saves a lot of hassle.
4. Good to see you on this forum Kai. I'm sure there's a lot of members who will enjoy hearing your views on double basses and string instruments. ....As well as a great luthier Kai is also a master coffee maker! Cheers Geoff
5. I love the look of these. I had a quick play through the 2x12 at bass day and loved it. The construction is first class. The design of the 12" cabs looks great. The handle under the top cab fits into the one on the floor to tilt it back further. Great design. I think the handle is being used in the 2nd of the OP pics.
6. I have the same hight for everything. I know people who have it lower for siting, but not for arco/ pizz. I have the nut level with the middle of my forehead both sitting and standing.
7. It's just been relisted with a starting price of £100. I've played the German pattern Con Lengo bow at Martyn Baileys and loved it. If this wasn't French I would buy it.
8. Ive found most electronic tuners work much better using the 12th fret harmonic of each string. Especially on the low B.
9.
Scroeder make one: http://www.schroedercabinets.com/mini12+.htm
The light version weighs 20lb That is light!
10.
It can be done and I've had amazing results - but all that kit and all those wires. I'm with Jake, use a piezo and enjoy the gig. Only exception is if there is a good front of house with a helpful engineer, but still monitor with the piezo.
+1
11.
Are they neos, Geoff?
I think so but I'm not 100% IMO the Mline is the best 12" for upright because of the porting. It could be a bit lighter, but it's a fairly average weight. I don't think I would bother changing an 8ohm to 4ohm. I'm guessing you still have loads of headroom on your amp? There's only so much you can get from a 12".
12. I've got two 12" EA wizzys. Both 4 ohm. One is the Mline and one normal. I prefer the Mline version for upright but it is a touch heavier.
13. The best seats for bass guitar that I have used are good quality drum stools with a back rest. The big padded ones, not the small circular seat. No idea about price but if you are sat on it for over 8 hours it's got to be worth getting something decent.
14. http://www.thwaites.com/ Thwaites offer a rental service. Also check out rentabass. http://www.rentabass.com/find_bass.php?region_id=169&country=United%20Kingdom

18.
http://www.mpenning-luthier.co.uk/Martin_Penning_Luthier/contact.html His basses are amazing too..
There's some amazing basses! Beautiful work.
19. Great bass. Too spikey for me, but I really like it.
20. I use a similar bass guitar one. Works fine, but I would love a hand drill with a winder on the end. Luthiers use them and it's quick!
21. Hey Nim, Your jazz bass sounds fantastic in the video. Nice work! Geoff
22. Wow! Great looking bass!
23. Ahhh. I've seen this and it's perfect! Give me a ring Laurence and I will try to talk you out of it! :-)
