1.
I have this irrational fear of low tension strings. I have convinced myself that the best way to build up technique is to deal with the more demanding action of a bass with higher tension strings. I have this idea that, if I go for really light strings, I will have the r/h technique of a big girly wuss and sound like a lightweight.
I love light strings, Evah weichs, belcanto, helicore lights, and spiro weichs all work great. Of course I am a bit of a wimp! :-) Christian Mcbride isn't though. Saying that whenever I hear anyone else playing spiro mittels I get serious string gas but never seem to be able to make them work for me.
2.
I'm at Boston Spa 7th April. Coach tours to see ancient monuments are quite popular round here - you could also see the Upton!
I will try to get down to that. I'm guessing you may have sold the Upton by then :-)
3.
Fancy organising a minibus Geoff? I bet there'd be a few of us from Yorkshire would love to see the Upton and meet Bassace face to face
Not such a bad idea!
4. This is a great deal! I would love to try this bass. I need a southern gig to give me an excuse :-)
5. Im off to 'For Sale' :-)
6. This is why I love basschat! Thanks for a great post. Geoff
7. I once did a jazz function with a trio on a boat in York. The low ceiling meant I had to play with my double bass scroll sticking out of an overhead porthole.
8. My main insentive to arrive on early/on time is so I can claim my space. I also agree with bassace that upright is even more hassle. Sometimes I'm ok when playing, but have nowhere to lay it down on the break.
9. Good buy Mike!
10. Great deal! I bet this sounds huge!
11. Bargain!!! Nicks a great guy and this is a superb starter bass.
12. This is a great chance to get a Fodera. The condition is amazing. Someone's going to be getting a great deal.
13.
woo hoo, came this morning....... Natural finish, quilted maple on alder with black accent line Morado finger board Nordstrand big singles Sadowsky pre with vtc nice and light ... 8.40ibls (3.81kg) Lovely player and great sounding...
I love this bass. Great pickup choice too!
14.
Might be a good idea to spend at least an hour or two every day. I try to spend about 30 mins on scales, 30 mins on arpeggios, and about 45 mins on reading. If I've got to learn new songs for the band, that'll take at least another hour. If you can afford a good bass tutor, go for it as they will be able to point you in the right direction where the Rockschool Grades are concerned.
+1 to all.
15.
we trade !!! seriously , it's enough with a drummer?
Yeh I use it for all my DB gigs. It's a great cab. As its only a single 12 it does have its limits, but it's loud enough for me. I've got no idea how it would compare with the ten2. I've heard that's a fantastic cab.
16. I use an AI Clarus with a 12"wizzy Mline. I love the cab. It works great with double bass.
17.
That performance blew me away, from a technical level for the bass and arrangement level on everything else. It was just beautifully done!
Me too. It was so slick! Such creative playing, beautifully done. Dancing and playing like that on live TV. Inspiring stuff.
18. Take care Keith and be careful if you go anywhere near any sharp objects :-)
19.
I love my Metro RV4. Sounds, feels & looks great to me. There's a large price difference between Metro & NYC basses so unless you need a custom option that only a NYC can provide, I'd say the Metro is a fine choice.
+1 I think NYC basses are the way forward for custom options, but Metros are a great option if you like the spec on offer.
20. I love my metro and have played NYC basses that were no better. Obviously you get what you pay for and the NYC are amazing, but I wouldn't hesitate in buying another metro if I lost mine.
21. I've never seen a DB from a shop that wasn't owned by a luthier that had properly set up double basses. Even in large string dealers they are more often than not badly set up. I wish the big music retailers would sort this out, but I guess it's just a case of money. it's just not practical unless you pay for one to visit the shop. Us double bassists really have to suffer for our art compared to most other instruments. :-)
22. Nice one Tom. Thanks for doing that. Your playing sounds great. Liking the double stops :-) Let us know how it handles on a gig.
23. Great stuff Jake. It's really cool that you are doing all this work and putting it out there for everyone. Fantastic resource.
24. I'm really sorry to hear this Clarky. I'm sure another great project will come along when you feel the time is right. It's always gutting when bands don't work out.
25. I've played a couple of the fender highway series basses and loved them! Great value too.
