Micro heads that go below 4ohm (other than TC RH)
geoffbassist replied to aldude's topic in Amps and Cabs
As long as there is a send/return on the back you can daisy chain amps. These micro amps are so light (and cheap) that you could put 2 in a rack and link them to each other driving either 1 or 2 cabs each. This way you have a permanent backup amp and can mix 4 ohm and 8 ohm cabs in a rig.
Thats an intresting idea. I've not considered that before. -

I didnt know about TC. Old Euphonic Audio do. The current range should be ok but it's advertised at 4ohm. Carvin. Eden. Acoustic image. -
Good advice fatback. Although I play German I still want to see the Rabbath DVD. I bet it's great!
-
I play German pattern, but only because my teacher did. There are many advantages of both. If you get a chance to play and compare bows with an experienced teacher that would be best. I think the most important thing is playing the same type as your teacher (if you have one). Remember more people use French than German in this country. However you don't plan to study arco and it's just for fun, scales and practice just get started on either. It will really help you develop your intonation even if your bow technique isn't great.

ethical responsibility from high end luthiers
geoffbassist replied to Jimmyp28's topic in Bass Guitars
Whilst the boutique makers are coming up with amazing new basses there has never been a better time to buy a starter bass. I know that's due to more efficient manufacturing, but It's worth noting that design and innovation at the top end of the market filter down and benefit the lower end The new budget basses are unreal. If top end basses were necessary for progression as a musician I might understand your view better. Not having one doesn't restrict you in any way. The prices of the boutique makers only effect people who choose to buy them. Their innovation and design helps everyone. -

I know what you mean Chris2112 and you are right that the individual elements are all available elsewhere. It was only after playing one I appreciated why people spend so much. I know all bass makers are unique, but IMO Fodera really are different enough to make me understand why people pay so much. It really is crazy money for a bass guitar though :-)
Saying that, I'm in line for a rather nice custom built singlecut...mwuhahahaha. Not a Fodera though!
...actually I loved the fodera walnut 5 that just sold from bass gear! I can't even begin to consider Fodera gas. My life's hard enough already :-)
Uniquely expensive . Although I suppose there are other brands that creep into their realm. Ritter possibly Alembic? I'm not anti fodera, I just think on the timeline of maturation of the brand they have gone into a weird zone and one which they can't really get out of. Supply and demand is one thing but when the only people that can afford your basses are the wealthy (or very disciplined) your brand's perception will morph into something slightly unappealing (just check out some of the characters in the fodera club threads). It's the same with Wals, when they went out of business, the whole fetishistic buzz became unbearable. They were unique and often great basses but the hype surrounding them was frankly nauseating. It's great news that they are back up and running and charging a reasonable amount for a good bass and that the hysteria surrounding them has abated. I often suspect the hype and hot air that drives this fetish thing for basses is driven by wealthy collectors and to be become a 'collectors brand' is not appealing, at least for me.
I agree. They don't apeal to me either. If I had 8 grand I would buy 4 sadowskys :-) ...But if you want a Fodera/Ritter/Wal/vintage fender then only the real thing will meet that need.
-
I've played a Matt Garrison Fodera a few years back and it was an amazing bass. It really was unlike any other bass I've played and that's why they charge so much. Not better, just different. Unique to them. You can't get the same results elsewhere so they charge accordingly. Supply and demand. Same with old basses.

JUST GIGGED MY EUB FOR THE FIRST TIME
geoffbassist replied to artisan's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Don't bother. The basses they have on the floor are practically unplayable. Last time I went in their entry-level bass had a bridge which was bent at the wings to a 45-degree angle - couldn't even get it up to pitch without risking snapping the thing in half.
+1 I know some guys on here have had success with G4M Archer basses but all of the ones in the showroom were unplayable when I went last year. Even the EUB was unplayable. Perhaps they are not all bad, but you would need to take it to a luthier for a set up. -

What do you call 90 double bass players in one room?
geoffbassist replied to Gareth Hughes's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Wow. I bet it was a nightmare finding your own gig bag after the show :-) -
Risingson you are so right. Where's the x factor band? At least Strictly has a band. This is a great thread. Im loving the music!

Looks great. I would love to give one a play.

Lessons-Practice-Performance Repeat forever. Just echoing the advice on here. You need all three elements for maximum improvement. They should be interrelated and feed each other. Get a great teacher. Play with better musicians than you and have an efficient practice routine. There are no limits to how much you can improve. Enjoy it!
I'm using GK MB200 for most of my gigs. It's great with upright & slab, weighs nothing & is cheap as chips to buy. There's a second hand one on here. For louder gigs I use the GK MB210 combo, again it works well with both upright and fender.
Yeh a lot of guys on Talkbass are using these and love them. Perhaps buy one and if it works sell the AI?
