That is quite odd… Mine was the other way around (effect was way to loud!). I have the effect itself pre-programmed to run at max volume (63?) and leave the dial on the far right at max (to avoid any confusion on where it should be if you tweak it). Then just adjust the gain accordingly. I have just had a look around the net though and it seems the system has changed! I found this for sale - http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/...Synth-Pedal/AXU which is totally different to mine and appears to have the octave section removed but the bonus that you can scroll up or down through the patches. mine however is like this - http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ass_Pedals.html Which version do you have?
Yes 63 is correct.... I must have the same version as you then as mine has the Octave as well (which is absolutely rubbish). I like the sounds it produces but it's a lot of money for a pedal thats just ok in my opinion. The software to adjust the sounds is very glitchy too. Having trouble reading and writing to the pedal

The one thing thats' really bugging me with the MB unit is that when switching between the effect and true bypass.... the bass in true bypass is slightly louder than with the effect setting and no matter how I adjust the balance level on the effect channel to give more bass and less effect, it's still the same... annoying the hell out of me.
I'm not a fan of the Octave part of the MarkBass, but the synth section is stunning once you scrap the factory presets and program your own!
Trouble is even having done that.... it's not a patch on the Akai SB-1..... now how do I raise the money to buy another one of those....

Here's my latest re-incarnation of my synth board. Gonna give it a whirl tonight. Still not happy with the Markbass unit, may look to trade this

I'd suggest that you read the wireless sticky. There are problems with going digital but at the level which most of the users here play at ie smaller stages, it's not an issue. There are issues with digital systems such as Instant drop out, issues with interfering with networks and durability. But as said mOst users here are playing small pubs and clubs so not so much of an issue

MB500 user here.... I compared against Genz, Markbass and EA.... the GK won for me having a much fuller sound to my ears. Running through 2 x Aguilar DB112. I'd suggest you get yourself somewhere you can a/b them all at once. I've also tried the TC kit which was excellent.
HC's guitar playing was perfectly congruent with the ensemble sound.
Should have used that in the Hooky thread..... Doh!

I don't think anyone would deny JD or NO influence on the Manchester scene.... but the OP was more about the awful racket Hooky is making in that video.
One of my young students really digs Joy Division and wanted to learn a couple of Hooks lines. I've got to be honest, none of them did anything for me-neither the basslines or the songs. Is the bassline to Blue Monday that recognisable? I've heard the song loads and can't bring the line to mind at all, even though I could sing the melody.
Blue Monday was a massive hit..... I remember back in the day when I was working in record sales, Blue Monday was always said to be the biggest selling 12" of all time.... I know the sales were there for it but don't know if that's still true today....... I seem to recall Sumner actually programmed the bass line
That's a bit narrow in thinking isn't it? So playing up the neck isn't a bass line? Since when?
I understand what you're saying and yes playing up the neck doesn't make it any less of a bass line.... what I meant was in reference to my earlier post about the bass line of Love will Tear us Apart..... in as much that it could be any instrument playing that melody.....
Threads like this always remind me of how unadventurous and if I'm honest, how close-minded people can be. As someone's already pointed out, the guy had a hand in Joy Division and New Order, and produced two of the most instantly recognisable bass lines of recent memory. He's an incredibly inventive bass player, and whilst a lot of the time I choose not to listen to Joy Division or New Order's music much anymore, I can't help but feel a lot of the criticism aimed at him is based on his perceived inability to fall in line and take on the typical role of what a bassist is 'meant' to do. Boring... at least give him the credit playing for contributing towards his music in his own unique way before claiming that 'he's not a bass player because he doesn't play the bass parts'. It's such a redundant argument.
Well one really seeing as one was a sequenced bass synth...
You could say the same thing about alot of stuff played by other bass players - most of it could be played by a guitar. Take the more fiddly stuff played by some bassists - the same thing could be done on a guitar.
Not really..... hooky plays up the neck.... it's not a bass line is it.... I mean would 'Good Times' by Chic sound the same if the bass line was played on guitar... I think not.
Hi Dave, Thanks for taking the time to respond. As it happens I'm in Glasgow as we speak (not sunny at all by the way - plenty of rain but no sun - you lied). This is a really impressive forum everyone’s encouraging and sends messages of good luck. Certainly can't say that of some other places I've used in the past. Kind regards Michael
Give it time...... -
In my opinion you don't need to be a virtuoso to be a good musician. Peter Hook is good at what he does and it works brilliantly within the context of Joy Division and New Order. I wonder how good Love Will Tear Us Apart would have been without that bassline.... I'm not going to slag him off!
that wasn't really a bass line though was it..... it was a melody line played on a bass. That could have been any instrument
This.. pretty much. Every gig I would want a fee... but if I really wanted to do it then I might waive it for a good reason. But the thing that gets my goat for a charity gig..or can do... the bands play for free, the PA guy gets paid as do the bar staff etc etc. It can make you picky about charity gigs if this is the case. I can't see why you would not set out to get paid.
I'm with you on this..... I play lots of charity gigs..... but we always ask for a fee. Ok it might not be our usual full wack but we still ask for a fee. The cost of transportation these days is enough to send your bank balance into the red.
