1. Bilbo's fave..... Mustang Sally.... Oh and Brown Eyed Girl...... Any songs with Slap bass will go down great!!
2. There's a great 'Slap' solo on the best of CD on the live track 'you can't get what you want'
3. you might want to check out Craig Blundell on youtube or his website as he has been at the forefront of the Roland drum Clinics for some time. At least you will be able to check out how he goes about it so to speak
4.
I've emailed but didn't get a reply yet, hope I'm not too late. David
Me too no reply..... utter w***!
5. Having used both the MB200 and 500 I would say that realistically you need to go for the MB500. The 200 is great but for they type of band you are in you need the extra grunt!
6. I don't bother any more since using Status headless models. I have spare strings to hand on stage and can change a single string and tune up in less than a minute. Though the last time I broke a string when playing live was back in the mid 90's on a Jaydee.
7. Saw them at Montreaux Jazz........ Watched from the Monitor Desk position and was blown away by how great they sounded. Also saw them at Eden Sessions and again was totally blown away.
8. You play Jazz though Bilbo..... so you fingers and picks are made of felt!
9.
He plays Hysteria in a weird position, don't you think - all around the 12th fret, seems almost a beginnerish way of doing it. I much prefer to play it around the middle of the neck, down to the 2nd fret on the descending part.
I think it's more about the sort of tone you get from playing up there.... I do this when playing James Brown's Cold Sweat. You get a different tone and tension going on.... nothing 'beginner-ish' about it at all..
10. If you don\'t mind used you can pick a MOTU 828 MK2 up for just over £200 these days and they are absolutely superb interfaces. Firewire, midi, SPDIF and also has ADAT built in if thats your bag
11. I use a lot of Synth effects and that in itself is a technique. To replicate certain synth (keyboard) lines you have to play very differently as you usually would. I love using effects
12.
can we define "cool" As far as defining others, id guess I here these 2 definitions mostly from others there is the "latest fashion, good moves" kind of cool and the "someone, being themselves without conforming to outside influence" type cool, totally different to the first definition And lets not forget Kool from Kool and the Gang
Bass is Kool and the gang Mo-fo!
13.
That will be another 'Who gives a damn? Don't you lot have something better to argue about?' poll.
Peter Hook or Guy Pratt??
14. Does anyone know if that Black Kingbass Mk 2 5 string is headless or not?
15.
over a year on and that came to naught!!!
No they used them on the last tour....... didn't you see the Pyro's!
16. And the ME-6B also
17.
Everyone up for a "Thunder Thumbs" fest then? Garry
I'll be changing my strings every half hour.........
18.
I've gone for "who gives a damn" as I've come to realise that at the end of the day almost every thread ends up in an argument whatever the subject
No it doesn't.....
19.
The thing with slap, which a lot of people seem to forget,is that it is a technique for getting notes to sound, just like playing with your fingers or a pick. The problem comes when people seem to forget how to use their left hand and how to play in different keys. How many slap lines are in E minor and/or octave patterns? The majority. The fast rhythmic stuff has it's place, but it's just a small part of what the technique is. Unfortunately,'slap bass' is often viewed as a style of it's own,and usually synonymous with funk-It is neither though. No technique is a style of it's own.The technique is usable in any style of music,it's more to do with the way you apply it.
well put Doddy!
20. Wow... 12pages and still going...... I do take offence though that it seems a lot of people on this thread think that Slap bass seems to be rubbish, not to be done, shouldn't be used as it's only for those who are of lesser musicality.... Hmmmm maybe like cover/tribute bands?? I don't think we should be putting people off trying it, I mean it's another style under your belt. There's not many different ways of playing the strings on a bass. Pick, Fingers, Thumb.... er.... tapping...fingers again.

Am I right in thinking that they started off as, dare I mention it here, a cover band?
22.
It's not happened to me - I've always used hardware sequencers or the file-playing capabilities of Akai samplers. However a friend's band who still use sequenced backing have recently switched to an iPod for playback since the vibration issue was causing havoc with the laptop. Even using shock mount damping only allowed them a bit more increase in playing volume until it kicked in again. Having said all that, using live sequencing can open up a whole load of extra possibilities. The last band I was in to do this had not only all the synthesisers and samplers controlled by the sequencer, but also the program changes for the electronic drums, and guitar and bass effects as well as automated mixing. We were looking into controlling the light show as well just before the band split.
Indeed.... though I never had issue with vibration..... my set up was a macbook into 2 x MOTU 828's which handled all audio and MIDI rack via built in ports into a soundcraft 328. The audio (loops) was sent via ADAT from the 828s into the desk then from there to FOH. It was very stable, never crashed. Someone stood on one of the fibre cables and that caused issues but we had spares. We have patch changes now sent from the keys player to change our Backdrop via projector and also to adjust the lights via DMX..... it takes a little programming but not a lot of brain power thats for sure.
23.
I spent nearly all of the 80s and 90s working with various levels of live sequencing and pre-performed backings 4. If you must run the sequencer live, I wouldn't recommend a laptop unless you can afford a backup. One of the problems I've seen with laptops recently is that the sound levels at gigs can cause sufficient vibration in the laptop to trigger the hard disk anti-shock mechanism (designed to protect the drive if the laptop is knocked over) which is the last thing you want to happen if you're streaming audio off the drive! Dedicated hardware sequencer are always better - they are designed to do a single job and do it well. A computer and a laptop in particular is built to do lots of different jobs and the demands that running music software require are nearly never at the top of the manufacturers build specifications.
Best not to leave it on top of your bass amp I guess.....
