playing with a pick is faster - fact or fiction?
SpondonBassed replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
I've just got to the point of making three finger triplets work, after a fashion. When I've got a bit more confidence at that I may go to four fingers. My little finger is significantly shorter than the rest and so it might not work without extra wrist action and the consequential fatigue, wear and tear. Using the little finger as a stiffener for the adjacent one sounds like a good idea though. -

Good suggestion! Anyone who captures useable audio from Basschat events could submit their recordings to the podcast team. As you say, when we're up and running and assuming a favourable reception from the membership it could be a regular thing. We'd only need a couple of nuggets of good information extracted from a recording of a workshop or guest speaker to back up a Site Events news item read out by one of the team. -

If a band becomes "hot property" for the music industry's machinery, production values come into play. As I understand it, you can have musicians who are only good in live situations with an audience egging them on. Others find studio work is their forte. Although bands do both for the most part, it is not uncommon for substitutions to be made in order to guarantee sales. This is usually done after consultation with experienced marketing organisations. -

Are you not the bassist the band uses for recording then? I am considering learning to use a decent drum machine myself. My TR606 is a faff to use and with it being analogue, it doesn't save files. To me as a bassist it is really only useful as a metronome. If I was yearning to become a percussionist I'd put effort into getting more out of it it but I ain't so I don't. If I did arrangements for my band's set with a drum machine I'd do so with a mind to put a live drummer in at some point and make it sound better for doing so. The knowledge of how to create playable drum patterns is lacking somewhat at this stage so I'd need a drummer to learn from. I can't seem to reconcile the two ideas though. The 22nd catch has tripped me up there. A real drummer has got to sound better than a drum machine, am I right? (Puts a hard hat on for safety) -

The American "can do" attitude has not been imported to the UK due to exorbitant import penalties. Heeheehee, only joking. There is a point to saying that however. The great British drive to make do and mend during wartime and the subsequent long period of rationing might mean that it is more of a Brit tendency to put up with second best than an American one. -

I am sure that when mixed a podcast can be made available (with the appropriate accreditation) across many platforms. I'd suggest however that Basschat is the first site to release a 'cast with a follow-up elsewhere the following day/week -

Cool. I've seen a couple of players do that and it looks like a worthy skill to adopt. -
None taken. It was a highly generalised statement however and I am proud of my countries achievements. Especially as they've paid for my house.

Liberace was alive back then and all... hmmm. -
Although I think it might just work in combination with my built in hamster-wheel powered active bass. I've got the paperwork going through the patents office as we squeak speak.

It's not a crusade that I've signed up for. Had I not got into Basschat and read of experiences like your own I could easily have gone on the search for the Holy Grail of bass players. I've realised that even if you find it, that particular cup is not likely to be brimming over with the essence of good bass delivery. Having learned that the search, whilst worthy, is long and expensive I've set my barrow down. I'll work with whatever is at hand to try and get the best from it. Thanks is due to all those BC contributors including your good self for sharing their knowledge.

I have no objection in principle. PM'd. Derby. I'd be happy to cover the East Midlands. Further if I got reasonable expenses paid. -

I don't use Skype. Why would you willingly introduce digital lag into a conversation? I don't have distant relatives that I keep in touch with nor has it been a necessity anywhere that I have worked so it's a non-starter for me. One of the reasons for not using mobile telephony as much as my service provider likes is lag. I can not have a relaxed telephone conversation on a mobile the same way that I can on a landline to landline connection. Even when the sound quality is less than crystal clear the timing of statement and response is more natural than so called "clean" digital audio. I hate laggy audio and I absolutely will not buy into it. Where it is provided for free it is difficult to tolerate too. I have a pocket Zoom recorder. Remote interviewing is not something I'd want to do. I'd prefer a day out to visit with anyone who has interesting experiences to impart to the listeners. I'm not up for the role of international correspondent as a consequence. -

I've already sucked those eggs as I am sure others have too. As I say, your advice is sound. We do have a significant number of novices who can learn from it. -

This is a wind-up, right? I feel you. This is a topic for the anally retentive. I need to sit on the doughnut in Granny's greenhouse now. *unfollow* -
Good suggestion. From what I read, that might be better than going to Nordstrand pups. I've not tried Nordies nor genuine Barts in anger but my Mk I Barts may be in line for a similar upgrade. On the subject of Barts vs Nordies there are posts in the forum where folk seem polarised towards one or the other. For the moment, I am happy enough with my Mk I Bartolini equipped Ibby even though they sound a bit heavy bottomed and less well defined in the lows than I'd like. I am to be considered as being a bit wet behind the ears on the subject however.

Yes but make sure to wash your hands before you go for a wee. Your red bass will not save you from an embarrassing chilli burn in a delicate area.
