1.
Is Epton's chip shop still going in Skegness? (Fries, blue) And if so does it still do that fabulous onion gravy? Good memories and about the only appealing thing about Skeggy in the mid 80s
Yes, and I think, yes. Still the best chippy in Skeg, though smaller than I remember it being when I was a kid!
2.
Bass direct stock them.
Just looked - it may just be the site but I can only see Dingwall sets - presumably multi scale?
3. I'll give these a go if I can find some.
4. I'm a big fan of Hi Beams. Another set of steel rounds on the smoother-feeling side of things: Ken Smith rock masters. I bought some in the States a few years ago - I remember being surprised and sceptical at the low price but ended up liking them more than the Elites I used at the time.
5. Potentially a real pedalhead's pedal! Looking forward to clips.
6. Quite keen to try the new Electro Harmonix Bass Clone.
7. To me it looks like the product of an unhappy marriage between MTD and G&L. It may look better in the flesh, and play and sound great, but it lacks its own identity. A bewildering amount of Gibson guitars of recent years have been parts bin Frankensteins with slack QC and poor finishes. I went SG shopping with my guitarist recently, he was really put off to see file marks all over fretboards and drippy finishes. The philosophy seems to be to make people pay custom shop prices for the quality and models they actually want.
8. Great band. I remember hearing them for the first time on Peel and going to Selectadisc the next day to buy "Wrong". At that time they drew as big a crowd as any band from that scene did before Nirvana broke. I was blown away when first I saw them play at Trent Poly - they were tight, loud and played with real swing and dynamics.
9. Matt Sweeney has played some toneful (and prominent) lines for Iggy Pop on an EB-3 this year.
10. Brilliant! And people are still raving about this circuit for bass, it's the basis of the DOD Carcosa.
11. Infanem 141g is another cool one, it can get really burly and square wavey.
12.
You can fix that! https://www.talkbass...-stone.1229566/
Interesting, thanks!
13. That sounds pretty good. With the Muff it reminds me of the Soft Moon. Might be a winner, hopefully the noise floor is OK. The last EH modulation pedal I bought was the Bad Stone reissue which sounds great but the switch pops too loudly to use live.
14. It's probably a combination of the woods, parts, scale, construction and pickup placement. A Guild B302 has pickups in the same positions and a set neck, but sounds very different. I can't think of any other bass that mimics the Ric formula with a more conventional (read- litigation proof) body/neck shape but I can imagine some builder turning it into a successful niche.
15.
You mean "the Beat Board".... still see a few in music shops. Forsyths in Manchester still have a good one.
The one in Selectadisc in Nottingham used to have some crackers.
16. I have the US Jag, it's an excellent bass with many good sounds but the one classic Fender tone it won't nail (IMO) is the J-bass with both pickups on "sweet spot".
17. You see plenty people still gigging with the first generation Voodoo Lab Pedal Powers. There are more modern power supplies with more current and options (the new TrueTones look good) but Voodoo Lab are the industry standard. Cioks have a solid rep too. Daisy chains are a mixed bag, some pedals (usually wahs and digital effects) don't like being chained and need an isolated supply.
18. It's flanging rather than phasing, but the Mr Black Shepard's End does the barberpole waveform thing and sounds cool on bass.
19.
How was it for wallop and flutter?
If it didn't wallop my back I'd still have it! I definitely got the flutters one time I was lugging up a pub fire escape in Leeds.
20. Mesa Boogie Buster 200 2x10 - massive plummy valve cleans, tonal and physical heft!
21. I thought at first they had the unit where the vintage clothes warehouse used to be but no, it's at the ground level of Marco Island. There is a pay and display under Marco Island at the rear. Drum & Guitar will certainly be worried, but I don't see much overlap with the other two music shops nearby, Nottingham City Guitars and Hot Rox.
