  5. Are there any production 32” basses around with a jazz width nut? Preferably something fast playing and passive with at least one humbucking PU selection. There seem to be a lot of shorties these days and the Acinonyx looks interesting but the tighter spacing at the bridge and the looser E puts me off somewhat.
  6. I'd consider a G&L SB-2 - very much a modern/aggressive P (with bonus J), a bit different from what you have. A few places have been selling off their Yamaha BB1024s cheap since they were discontinued - that's a lot of bass for the money. A used Ibanez Blazer or Peavey Fury too. Excellent woods and workmanship and a good platform to drop a modern pickup into. My Blazer sounds killer with rounds.
  7. An 80s L2000 has the three bolt micro tilt neck joint, a new one will have a six bolt neck. Most 80s models will have a metal control plate and black powder coated bridge. Necks vary considerably as customers buying direct can specify the profile and nut width. I've played a huge, deep '81 with a 45mm nut and others that were jazz-like. G&L have limited edition "Custom Creations" which are essentially limited run models. All G&L USA direct orders are in a sense custom shop instruments as the buyer chooses their spec from the available options.
  8. Spot on, it's a second generation RB850. Those active Lo-B pickups are really growly. Ibanez didn't scrimp on the hardware in those days. I have a Musician from the same year and the Roadstar has the same hardware and neck profile as the flagship model. Just a smaller, basswood body and a bolt neck. The necks on these are great - slim and very fast but more substantial than an SR, typically excellent smooth MIJ fretjobs. The only downside is the black hardware is prone to galvanic corrosion; while the bridges are usually functionally fine, they can look like they came up with the Titanic. I found the earlier version of this bass (with the passive Super P6 pickups) in a second hand shop in Hammersmith recently for not a lot of money, the body had a bit of finish checking so I passed but I was tempted to get it as a backup.
  9. I've been thinking about this problem, and I believe the way forward is to spec a Maruszczyk that looks like a Marlin Sidewinder.

I ended up getting the tap tempo version of the DMM, which I'm really into (I also liked the Strymon Dig with bass), but of course we seem to be living in a golden age of effects and in the meantime several others are coming out that sound interesting. I'd like to try the DOD Rubberneck, and there's a new version of the Endangered Audio Research AD4096, but there seem to be no clips/videos of that one yet.

[/quote] There was one with three MM type single coils in totally different positions to the G3, and another more accurate Grabber-esque one with the sliding pickup and slightly too big headstock. I only saw the sliding pickup one once, definitely a very small run.

  15. The Grabber is such a cult bass with alt-rock/metal bands, surely it would sell if given a reasonably accurate reissue?
  16. I used another band's Bergantino NV last year, it sounded absolutely righteous. Their bassist said it wasn't heavy but it clearly wasn't a one handed lift.

  20. I've got a lot of time for Magazine. Barry auditioned for the band as a complete bass novice (listen to the bassline on "The Light Pours out of Me") and progressed very quickly. "A Song From Under the Floorboards" is superb. Devoto's arch delivery is part of the charm, he's not a powerful singer but he was a great lyricist and had a weird "Emcee from Cabaret" kind of charisma.

But when I looked at the site, almost everything of interest was out of stock or has gone up by £20 since the last time I looked there.
  23. The Tech 21 is great for the harmonized sound with no modulation and more modern sounds in general. Very tweakable and easy to use in different setups. The Providence ABC-1 has real vintage character, but properly voiced for bass; the high pass filter controls how much of the low end gets chorused and the deep switch goes from a Boss CE-2-esque wide/spacious tone to a warmer/wetter EH type sound. The Providence can be set to sound very lush but still present in a band mix, and if you use it after drive it doesn't add hiss. I've not tried the Bass Clone but at that low price it's tempting!
