1. I was thinking of having a punt on This but he describes it as a Custom shop which it doesn't seem to be and also as a Fullerton reissue. I thought Fullerton referred to the reissues made in the old Fullerton factory in the early 1980s? Yet he says in the text it's a 2002. Have I missed something or is it just an AV reissue
2. As an experiment I'd suggest that on your next gig you just use the 4x10 and see what difference that makes to your sound. You might be pleasantly surprised OTOH you may decide you still don't like tha Ashdown
3.
Thanks Andy I must admit, I am uncertain about parting with the Evo III head as it has such a good reputation and as you say doesn't contribute that much to overall weight. However, I have had trouble dialling-in a sound that I like. I was listening to Paul Simon's bass player on TV tonight (Glastonbury) Bakithi Kumalo, and heard my ideal bass sound, but all I can get from the Ashdown is an indestinct bass boom with a percussive top (probably from my finger nails). It may be the cabinets which have three position horn switches, but more likely, I am not using the amp properly. I don't know whether to use the guitar or amp EQ or a combination of both, and don't have much luck with compression. Also there is the valve pre-amp option. Also from years of playing, I am a bit deaf (warning to all you youngsters out there). Any advice. Jack
I'm not familiar with the 415T. Is that a 4x15? Surely not I used to use a mixture of 10s and 15s with my ABM head and have to say I could never get a sound I liked consistently. The speaker experts will tell you that mixing different sized speakers will give very inconsistent results and my experience has borne that out. My sound improved dramatically when I changed to Barefaced and Schroeder cabs with the ABM. That's why I suggest changing the cabs first.
4. I'd keep the head and change the cabs. Swapping the head for another will cost you a lot and not save you a lot of weight. If you like a big fat traditional bass sound nothing does it better then the Ashdown ABM and you may spend a long time auditioning micro heads to find one that sounds as good. As for cabs I'd give Barefaced a try first if lightweight is your first priority. I used a Compact with an ABM500 and it sounded fab. If you are looking for stack type volumes then maybe a Compact + Midget or a Super 12. Both those combinations would sound monstrous. If 10s are your thing then a pair of Neo 2x10s from Bergantino, Markbass or Genz are very light if you can still get Neo drivered cabs within your budget.
5.
I bought, and still use, a pair of Thumper-built Omni 10.5s. These are great cabs - there is still a demand for them and a shortage of people with the ability and resources to build them. I don't think you'll have any shortage of orders - probably more than you can reasonably handle, which I think is why Thumper stopped being an authorized builder.
I'm not quite sure why you quoted me. I wouldn't dream of suggesting that any BCers could possibly be timewasters or tyrekickers.
6. I'd suggest you ask the same question on FinnBass. Thumper on there used to be a BFM builder and will tell you all about the timewasters that come out of the woodwork when attempting something like this.
7. I had one sometime back in the mid 1990s. To call it a Precision is a bit of a misnomer as it doesn't bear much resemblance to a standard P. It's active with a P/J pickup config and completely different neck and body shape. My memories of it are getting a bit hazy but I don't recall that it was very Precision like.
8. Blue Aran in Southampton has a lot of useful stuff
9. So according to him Crafted in Japan are nowhere near the same quality as Made in Japan. Seller's bullshit always makes me smile
10. Looks like it was withdrawn by the seller. The last one I saw on ebay went for £2500 which is more than they are new, so maybe he had second thoughts about the price. If it'd been down here I would've bitten his hand off at that price
11. I'm one of the 7%. I only own a Precision although I do hanker after a Jazz from time to time for noodling purposes. I've owned about 3 or 4 Jazzes in the past and always end up selling them. I'm not really a collecter of anything and don't really feel comfortable owning lots of "stuff" no matter what it is and I guess that feeling extends to basses. It's probably my inner Hippy.
12.
Having problems uploading pic's due to having exceeded my file limits so PM me your email and I'll bounce some over to ya.
I had the same problem. Try Photobucket
13. I don't suppose it'll put anyone out of business. Just that the price of lightweight speakers will go up for anyone who wants to buy them. It's too big an increase for the manufacturers to absorb so the end user will end up having to pay. I also think we'll see more of this sort of thing going on in the future as China flexes it's economic muscles
14.
Is that your hand in the photo? That bass looks HUGE!!! Bump for a Great bass.
No I'm a very small person
15. Excellent condition. Some minor chips on the end of the headstock and some very tiny, almost unnoticeable dents in the finish. Comes with all the bits and bobs. I'll also include a good quality Levy's leather strap, Warwick Rockbass gigbag and a couple of good quality instrument leads. It's fitted with D'addario Chromes flats and apart from the bridge cover and holes for the pickup cover is completely stock. Also included is a faux vintage tweed case with snazzy furry red lining I'm not gonna post this but will meet halfway up to 100 miles or will deliver if you pay for my diesel @ £0.10 per mile which'll probably work out cheaper than a courier anyway. If collected I'll throw in a Line 6 LD15 combo also in excellent condition. Sorry no trades because I need the cash.
16. I've had mostly good experiences buying and selling here. The only one that left a sour taste in my mouth was when I sold a little practise combo. We agreed a price and I posted it without receiving payment first. As the guy is a regular poster and can often be heard pontificating about morality and doing the right thing I didn't think twice about it. I sent it on the Monday and let him know, but on Saturday I still hadn't heard from him and I was starting to get a bit worried that something had happened to it so I PMed hime and got the reply back "Oh yeah it arrived a couple of days ago. I sent you a message but must have forgotten to press send" Yeah right. How gullible does he think I am, but I did receive payment shortly after. If he had wanted it on approval I probably would have agreed anyway. Then a couple of days after that I get a PM from him with a very whiny tone complaining that it wasn't working so I offered him a full refund and also told him to keep the amp. So he would have had the money and the amp and I'd taken it on trust that it was faulty. I never had a problem with it. Then a bit later I get another PM saying it's working after all, it was just the fuse. What!!! Why didn't he just try that first, if it stopped working at all? So after all this the p***k couldn't even be arsed to leave me some feedback. My main issue with this forum is the bad manners. I've given a few things away and a couple of times the ill mannered recipients didn't even bother to PM to say it's arrived and thank you. Again they were both regular posters and the items in question were worth a few quid. Everything goes on Freecycle now. Well done BC
17.
but the learning by ear gets me everytime.
Like most things I've found that learning by ear gets easier with practise. After a while you will be able to hear a note and know where it is on the fretboard without having to noodle around to find the right one
18.
I blagged my way through bands, by learning the chords from the guitar player or using tabs, which I still do. Last year in April I played my last gig, and since then I've been without a band mostly by choice though. But now after a year without playing I start to feel the bug again and slowly start to make my way into bass. But I realise that I'm a fake and that I can't cut it as a player. I would like to play originals with a band or with a singer but my first problem would be to learn songs that are already written, since I can't learn by ear. At the same time I thought of selling the rest of my stuff, (i sold a bass and a cab last year) and find something else to do since I've been a big fake for years.
This pretty much sums up exactly how I feel about my playing but ironically most guys I've been in with bands think I'm quite a good musician. I guess there are worse fakers around
19.
If only martin lewis played bass and became a forum member
To quote Martin Lewis "Debt isn't bad, it's bad debt that is bad"
20. No one's laughing. Not everyone has top end gear. I expect most people will recommend Peavey but I would think either of these would be fine for home use. I have no experience of the Peavey but I used to use an RB3 at an open mic night where it was the supplied backline and it coped perfectly well and sounded pretty good. It didn't rattle the windows but you wouldn't expect it to.
