1. Am all out of Fig (rolls) for this now. I have a THR for my guitar and it's very nice, lots of features, good sound, light etc. Like the B Social it isn't to replicate your gig rig (although I don't have one, so it is actually my main guitar amp..) So I can see that any limitations it might have need to be taken with that in mind. But £600?! I paid £219 for my THR, and I could see the B Social justifying more because it has a few extra bits like wireless playback etc, but £600?! I presume it makes toast too for this price?
2. 3mm on my Peavey - I have had to put relief back into the neck because there's some definite uneven frets going on around 3-6 and it just chokes even with the bridge saddles at full height. Now I have the saddles in the middle of their range, and only a touch of buzz when I play. It does depend how you learned to play: I couldn't use my amp at any sort of volume for years as it would annoy flatmates etc. so I really dig in to make myself heard. If I had the action down at 2mm It'd be buzz city. I do like the clank though.
3. Right place, right time - bit like Oasis. *shudder*
4. Yes - I can recall proper hip-hop such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul etc., but this is just 'urban' and it's utter tripe. There are countless artists far better than him but who can't afford the PR. He's currently trying to get the photoshopped pic of him snogging himself taken off the internet. (Someone, find the button and turn it off while we remove the source of the picture. That'll do it.) Bieber had a definite teenage phase of being a pillock (to put it mildly)- guess that can happen when you sell a million records at 15 or whatever it was. He appears to be a but more sensible now (his music's still not my cup of tea) - but he did, for instance, tell his UK fans to download the NHS song at xmas so it could beat him to Number 1. Now, you can argue that was clever no-lose PR from him, but the effect was still altruistic.
5. I don't pluck every note on Bass or Guitar. I find hammering-on louder than pull-offs, for both instruments. I'm only talking 3-4 note runs here - not Allan Holdsworth - pick once at the start of the song - style legato...
6. Do you know what it weighs? Also - how's the action and what do the controls do?
7.
"wah wah pedal": A device that be engaged by a guitarist enabling him to repeat the same lick over and over again until such time as he thinks of a different one.
Also known as 'The Kirk Hammett effect.'
8.
Interparcel will ship these for less than £20....
I wouldn't trust a courier with anything more complex than a book: I've read the threads (not just this site). It has valves and electronics in, not worth the risk of damage and then the lengthy and protracted compensation battle, or negative feedback if it arrives in a worse condition than it was sent.
9. Sold elsewhere. Half of my much loved Trace Elliot Cab. Bought from new in 1998 by me - an 1153t 15" Cab. It's been used for practice but never gigged. The Cab is 200w at 8ohm, with 2 tuning ports (that's what they are, right?), and the same indestructible casing. Can stand as shown or on it's side as it has feet on the bottom and left-hand side. 2 hide-away spring-handles with sturdy grips mean that one person can lift it (but you need to put your back into it.) Based in Halifax - looking for £170, now £150 , now £140.
10. Noodle: what bassists do with style and flair in music shops when trying to think of the tunes they were going to play to try out this bass they've picked up. Alternatively: what guitarists do in the same instance, but usually at ear-splitting volume with too much distortion and some added: watch how badly I can sweep pick eh?!
11. For Sale: Source Audio Dimension Reverb This pedal (which is just as cool with Bass as Guitar) opens up a whole echoey world of Reverb. Featuring 12 clever tones including: Spring, Hall, Plate Stage, Arena and the bonkers Metal Box. With controls for Time, Treble Cut/Boost, Mix, and the 5 option section (with one control) for Pre-Delay, Diffuse, Rate, Bass and Depth, 2 storable presets, and True Bypass - this is a fantastically tweakable pedal that rewards a bit of patience with some great sounds. You can also select the Control Input: Midi, Expression Pedal or Hot Hand Controller. Comes in original box, without adaptor (takes standard 9v) £85, now £80 posted.
12. Now sold elsewhere Source Audio Guitar OFD Micromodeler The OFD Pedal (Overdrive, Fuzz, Distortion) features 12 of the gnarliest drives; including some famous tones such as El Raton, TS9000, Big Pi, and an array of other usable sounds, from the gentle Tube Drive to Metal and a rather cool Gated Fuzz. With controls for Drive, 3 band-Eq, Output, 3 stage Noise Gate and Voice (sort of a mix between Tone and Presence), 2 storable presets, and True Bypass - this is a fantastically tweakable pedal that rewards a bit of patience with some great sounds. Comes in original box, without adaptor (takes standard 9v) N.B. While there is a Bass version of this pedal - the controls are identical (it's internal electronic tinkering to adapt its performance) this does work perfectly well with a Bass: Tube Drive and Bender are particularly cool on the lower octave. £85 posted.
13. 1 currently Peavey Millennium 4 and 1 guitar: Modern Player Tele and there's my eldest child's Uke, which is fun for a noodle.
14.
Camel, Flight Of The Snow Goose.
Yes - utterly brilliant album. Nice story it's inspired by too.
15.
Life is short and it is precious. The meaning of life is to do the things that give your life meaning. It may help the OP to be happy and stop worrying about worrying.
I hope your second line was earnest and not flippant... That's quite a lot easier to say than do for a lot of people. But I agree that you should pursue what you enjoy. I am not amazing but enjoy playing. And yes: family/friends don't think much of it - but then when they say 'can you play something we know?' and you play anything except THAT bit from The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, they will just think you clunked out a few notes that sort of sound familiar.
16. Well - if you think about it; navigation. 1st Fret doesn't need one, but placing them at 3, 5, 7 and 9 means you can navigate easily up the neck. Double dots at 12 and remember it's 3 fret gap either side... easy enough.
17. Not to mention Trace Watts, Behringer Watts and obviously Ampeg Watts. Grit - variously delineated with 'hair,' 'dollop,' or 'can I use it for Metal?'
18. I've been playing Bass for 20 years and I'm still pretty average. Sure I can play Red Barchetta and a dozen of Rush's top tunes all the way through, but I only know a few scales, can't sight read, my timing is probably poor as I've not been in a band for 19 years, and I find Theory numbingly boring - and I cheat by being a Guitarist too... It keeps me happy, I enjoy hearing jingles and playing them by ear, and I've even stuck at it long enough to start handing the reins over to my kids - one of whom now has a ukelele. Don't give up - the Bass needs you! As a few others have pointed out: consider how many bass players can play you off the floor. How many of them can a non-musician name? Not very many... You're better than you think. Tell us the songs you struggled with - I bet some of us find 'easy' songs harder than complex ones with nice muscle-memory noodly passages. I know I do!!
19. We have to allow for humans in a 'live' environment. If a member of staff is having an off day, fine, they shouldn't take it out on the customer, but it happens. They have personal lives too. If the management repeat the attitude or don't address it - then yeah, you have a problem - but expecting every visit to a shop to be wonderful is a bit much. Often it's younger, lower paid staff doing these front line jobs: working their way up and on in the world of employment. Most of us were in such a job once (any job, I never worked in retail, but I spent many an hour keeping a photocopier company (but that's another story...)). There are a couple of local music stores near me; one is a bit 'are you local?', and the other is a nice place to visit. They compete with PMT, which in Leeds is actually alright - yeah it gets busy and you can't find staff when you need someone, but they play good music and are fairly helpful. (Their stock is another issue though...)
20.
Rush - hemispheres ?
Cygnus X-I Part 1 on A Farewell to Kings has it's other half, Part 2 on Hemispheres, but the rest of the latter album is just other random awesomeness, and not a concept album.
21. I used to have one in Red. Lovely instrument.
22.
Oh lordy, an April '65 Jazz... not just a YOB bass, but a MOB bass. *whimper*
I suppose it wouldn't help to track down the QC inspector of the time who wrote the final tick on it the instant you were brought wailing into the world (even allowing for time difference.)
