Bass player by choice, or relegated guitarist?
Master blaster replied to Tuono's topic in General Discussion
I started on keys then gave up when i was 15. Didn't touch an instrument for 3 years until i was persuaded to join a band as a bass player. Since then i have found that the bass has opened up a world of music which the keys failed to. I figured out how to play the guitar from playing basslines on the guitar, and then expanding them to power chords. I've also learnt to drum after borrowing a kit or 2 over the years. I've gigged on the bass, guitar, drums and as a singer and i found that for me whereas the other instruments were/are fun to play, i enjoy gigging as a bassist a lot more. -
Just uploaded a couple of tracks onto the basschat group soundcloud. I also have my own account, https://soundcloud.com/jamesgardnerbass. I've been recording a lot in my spare time to keep me sane when away from work. I have only recently been singing and writing lyrics so it would be cool to see what people think.
Another point to make is that in my experience, no matter how far you've travelled or if you're doing other local camps in the chain, they're not interested in offering you free accomodation, even a cravan for the band. Also, you will go onstage after a giant rabbit.
We always managed to get accommodation when we did them. I think they were written into the contract. I enjoyed the first couple shows i did in holiday camps. But the rolf harris songs and the dodgy entertainment has put me off big time.

Ok... Your top 10 Bassists of all time?
Master blaster replied to bassickman's topic in General Discussion
I think we should have a bassist of the month thread, within that thread only posts about the current bassist can be made, comments, views, links etc. Have the big names in their such as Jamerson, and less know players who have done great work in the background Over time it will introduce as all to some we dont know, and inform us of those we do ..... Not sure who gets to choose each time, but if I dont get heckled for suggesting this or ignored, Ill start it up and devise a system for having different members naming the playing each time.
Thats a great idea! Heres mine. I love bassists that when you watch them they make it seem so effortless. My top 7. Nathan Watts Paul Turner John Parker Stuart Zender Bernard Edwards James Jamerson Anthony Jackson -
Hi guys, got a few bits i need to get rid of. Gator Pedal tote pro. SOLD Sansamp Bass Driver DI pedal. SOLD Next is a Joyo Dyna Compressor. Its in great condition.
Not really a Bass shop, Soundpad in Barnstaple (n.devon). very off the beaten. Quite competitive on price, used to have a rep for being expensive. Very good so far - but I'll tell you if they fall down if the replacement battery compartment box, for my Ibby, doesn't turn up in the next 10 days! Fingers crossed Used Gear4Music a couple of times and had good experiences, so far. Never really had the cash to buy loads of gear so never really had an awful experience so far.
Ide have to say soundpad are fairly good on price, but not good on repairs. I took a bass there a few years ago to get the dodgy pre amp fixed and it took them 2 weeks and a phone call from me asking whats going on to here they couldn't diagnose the problem. Took it to mansons the day after getting it back and the same day it was sorted!

Tony Butler Signature Bass - Vintage V4MTB
Master blaster replied to TransistorBassMan's topic in Bass Guitars
I went to the college Tony taught at. It was weird him never actually playing anything, not even touching and instrument whilst i was there. He did comment at the 88 thumb bass i had at the time saying that he had one but he got rid of it cos it wasn't "rock and roll". Tbh i have never met a bass player with the arrogance of a lead guitarist. He does love himself a bit to much for a teacher as all his lectures revolved around what he did with Big Country. Which kinda put me off them. -

The Rockschool pieces are way to easy to be grade 8. I'de stay away from pieces that are from graded books. Most of those pieces lack character and can be boring to listen to and play. Also im sure they'd prefer a grade 8 standard piece, not an actual grade 8 piece from a book. Picking something away from a graded syllabus will show them more about you as a player.
Plus a million bajillion. An investment you won't regret. Any earplugs you may find you'll have to take in and out. I find my ER 15's so comfy I leave them in all night. Dan
ACS all the way. they cost a lot and they feel weird when they mould them to your ears. And you can take the filters out and use the moulds for in-ear monitoring too. You just don't want to loose them!

I just learn the main bits. Like if its a well known piece then I'de learn the main parts then make up the rest. saves abit of time

Hello everyone. Heres my bands new showreel. We recorded it last summer in the pier theatre in Bournemouth. It would be cool for any feedback. It was recorded live and the sound isn't amazing but it does the job. Cheers James http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ9PGUyd_Ig&feature=g-all-u&context=G2e2fd14FAAAAAAAAAAA
