1. This is incredible. I don't know if anyone else has posted this yet but it's brilliant, and terrifying at the same time. http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=plpp&v=3RBSkq-_St8

3. I find when i listen to "Songs for the Deaf" by "Queens of the Stone age" my driving becomes more aggressive without really realizing. Its great however for driving home after a gig, keeps you nice and awake.
4. They're got different grains. Seems like one just copied the other description to me
5. You think this guy spends much time in country pubs outside of London with Mark Percy?
6. This has to be the mark percy quote of the day, "The van also had complete survival equipment, military rations, camping equipment, survival equipment in case of catastrophe. This van had brand new tyres made by Continental. It may have been stolen to order".
7. I might blame the reason as to why im not a global superstar on every little mishap and dodgy moment in my life.
8.
It just gets better and better - http://markpercy.co.uk/musician_attacked.htm This guy appears to have some seriously bad Karma going on!
Seems like MI5 have been onto him for years
9.
To be honest, given that Jaco arranged tunes for a big band amongst other achievements, it suggests that he had a better grasp of theory than you credit him with. And soloing in a jazz context requires you to internalise a lot of information. I don't imagine there are any great jazz soloists who didn't have a very solid understanding of harmony - you don't just pull music like that our of your arse you know. I agree that there are people who've made really engaging music but never knowingly learned any theory. But put those people in a different musical situation and they will probably fall flat on their arses.
I wasn't saying he didn't have a decent grasp on theory. Just saying that to me I think maybe he was taking a step back and letting his figures flow.
10.
You don't think that knowing lots of music theory would allow you to play more extreme-sounding music when you want to?
I wasn't saying that, I was saying would he have been constantly thinking about the rules of music and as a bass player when composing? I don't think so. He took an instrument that backs other musicians and instead of playing roots 3rds and 5ths, he got other people to do that for him and he took the lead. Knowing lots of theory can make you a great musician. But at the same time being ignorant, curious and inventive can also be a great musician.
11. I see that playing musically makes you a musician, just playing without listening to what your really doing and how it interacts with others just makes you a player. Many people regard victor Wooten as one of the greatest bass players and yet he admits to knowing very little theory, but he really emphasises other important aspects like listening. Hes said " “Music is like a language. You don’t need to know the rules behind it to speak it. It always helps to know the rules behind it but it isn’t, by any means, necessary. Anyone can pick up an instrument and learn it because they don’t need to know the rules. They just feel it.” Also I'm sure jaco wasn't thinking music about theory when he played otherwise we wouldn't have pushed the boundaries as he did.
12.
Cheers, i'm not sure if i'll write lyrics, because i'm not really singer, but i might do some background vocals for texture. Maybe one song with lyrics and a guest singer maybe. I'm downloading Logic Pro 9 soon, which i think has a drum created thingy on it (it bloody better at £140!).
I use Logic Pro. Ultrabeat is brilliant for creating loops as it allows you to easily play around with dynamics to make loops sound anti more human. There's a pretty good loop library too. Make sure u have a decent interface without latency, saves so much time when you don't have to sync timing.
13. the thing I love most about his website is the need to stress how important he internation dialling code is. It's just classic pointlessness. Also i wonder if Iron Maiden think there careers that has made them millions is all down to Mak Percy getting them signed.
14. I know a guy with a big amp. He cant play for sh*t but hey, that doesn't seem to matter because his amp is HUGE. Its great for country pubs because it stacks right to the beams and its makes all the tankards hanging from the ceiling shake, not to mention that it'll piss of the dog sat by the fire. So i will tell him that Mark Percy is looking for a bass player. Im sure he will jump at the opportunity. Maybe if i get an svt and a 8x10 cab i will finally be a proper bass player. Im going to have to buy a van to just so i can transport it. Im going to have retire my current setup of 2 1x12s and a markbass head though which, has been loud enough for every gig ive done over the last 2 years (from pubs to 500 cap venues). Its a shame because it fits in the boot of my micra and its works great with a 9 piece band without going through the front of house. But i will do whatever its takes to be a proper bass player...
15.
Ah, The Haven. That's a hometown one for me. You and I are sort of sh*thole exchange students- I played a genuine one-man-and-his-dog in Taunton a few years back! We should have swapped gigs and saved the petrol.
Lucky for me I was living in Bournemouth at the time and got a lift . Taunton a Somerset as a whole s pretty crap for gigging. You'd be lucky to cover cost in most places. It's bad to think that most of my gigs are 80 miles away and I still earn more than double than I can around here after petrol.
16. I think when I was 15 or so I would have said its all about the music and not the money. But when u go up and down the country playing sh*tty pubs and clubs and being told you should be greatful for the £5 they pay you, or playing crap holiday parks (especially the haven in hastings) infront of large amounts of pissed/ horney Jeremy Kyle-anites, who got a weeks worth of quality static caravaning for £20 and 10 coupons from the sun, then money really does matter a lot more. Why should it just be about the music when you have beer spilt on you and having pissed people shout mustang Sally every 2 minutes. Don't get me wrong, I love gigging but there are to many sh*t gigs to make me want to do it for love of music and not the money. So if some record company big cheese signed me up and told me to dress up like lady gaga for a massive amount of wonga..... Ide think about it. Also it's funny how some examples have been used like rage against the machine and Simon Crowell, In ways that say ones better than the other, when at the end of the day they have the same bosses.
17. The pop industry is only there to sell records not to introduce new exciting music. A majority of the music buying public don't have musical ears and are really influenced into buying music. And they knw it. There's a guy I work with that plays music on his phone and its just like listening to a Now that's what I call music album. So why should the record company's risk investments when they can reproduce something that been tried and tested before knowing they'll make shed loads of money. It does suck but there aren't many top 20 acts over the 20 years that haven't shown strong influence from previous acts. It all revolves around fashion, and it just so happens that with bands like Mumford and Sons around it kinda makes folk music the 'in' thing, so it's a great time for the record industry to introduce a Bob Dylan-alike.
18. I started on keys then gave up when i was 15. Didn't touch an instrument for 3 years until i was persuaded to join a band as a bass player. Since then i have found that the bass has opened up a world of music which the keys failed to. I figured out how to play the guitar from playing basslines on the guitar, and then expanding them to power chords. I've also learnt to drum after borrowing a kit or 2 over the years. I've gigged on the bass, guitar, drums and as a singer and i found that for me whereas the other instruments were/are fun to play, i enjoy gigging as a bassist a lot more.
19. Just uploaded a couple of tracks onto the basschat group soundcloud. I also have my own account, https://soundcloud.com/jamesgardnerbass. I've been recording a lot in my spare time to keep me sane when away from work. I have only recently been singing and writing lyrics so it would be cool to see what people think.
20.
Another point to make is that in my experience, no matter how far you've travelled or if you're doing other local camps in the chain, they're not interested in offering you free accomodation, even a cravan for the band. Also, you will go onstage after a giant rabbit.
We always managed to get accommodation when we did them. I think they were written into the contract. I enjoyed the first couple shows i did in holiday camps. But the rolf harris songs and the dodgy entertainment has put me off big time.
21.
I think we should have a bassist of the month thread, within that thread only posts about the current bassist can be made, comments, views, links etc. Have the big names in their such as Jamerson, and less know players who have done great work in the background Over time it will introduce as all to some we dont know, and inform us of those we do ..... Not sure who gets to choose each time, but if I dont get heckled for suggesting this or ignored, Ill start it up and devise a system for having different members naming the playing each time.
Thats a great idea! Heres mine. I love bassists that when you watch them they make it seem so effortless. My top 7. Nathan Watts Paul Turner John Parker Stuart Zender Bernard Edwards James Jamerson Anthony Jackson
