I enjoy playing and I enjoy bass as a design form too, you know what I mean? I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm a collector. I'm an enthusiast of the instrument as well a player of one. The first thing I do with any new instrument is strip it down, see how all the parts work together. I'm not the kind of person who'd have ten Jazz basses or ten Stingrays, multiples of the same thing, I just don't see the point, but I do see the logic in a variety of different basses which follow different design philosophies. I enjoy the differences, the nuances which make one bass different from the next. There is a lot of variety and creativity in the world of bass which I find fascinating and, as long as the bills get paid, I don't see a problem in pursuing that interest. As vices go, I think it's a pretty minor one. That being said, if a bass doesn't move me or falls too much under the shadow of another I move it on. As a result, I don't see an end to GAS, but I just don't see the harm in it either. I don't eat the same thing for dinner every day, I don't wear the same style of clothes every day, so why would I stick to just one bass for the rest of my life either? Why would you restrict yourself, for what purpose? I don't want to beat GAS, I see GAS as a sign that the world hasn't broken me down just yet, there's still a spark in me, a continuing fascination in the instrument I first loved as a fourteen year old boy. Long may it continue!

That's a complicated situation alright so hugs first Definitely put up ads, be clear about what you're looking for, if it's just someone to jam with to improve both your playing levels without getting to gigging band levels, just say so. I guarantee you're not the only person in that position, but never be afriad to give something you think is over your level a go. You might just surprise yourself. As for playing with your ex, it's been along time so theoretically there shouldn't be a problem, but I can see why you'd be concerned and why you think the new woman would be concerned too. It would be a shame for your musical collaboration to end for this reason though, as you both seem to enjoy it.

Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?
Doctor J replied to Jam's topic in General Discussion
The more experienced you are, the better your ability to recognise how far away you are from being an expert. -
Keep your eyes on the prize, it'll be worth it.

Ah, it's yours?!?! Excellent I thought it was Glenn Hughes one. I didn't know they had made a few for retail. -

I am entirely besotted by the 2024X and I have to say I prefer the rosewood version, definitely. -
The man who really got me fired-up for bassplaying was Colin Hodgkinson, who I first saw with Back Door back in about '75. Precision + solos + lead vocals.
Hodgkinson is the man. Paul Jackson, who played for Herbie Hancock, is quite swish, if not quite the lead player you're probably looking for.

It would be superb with the maple and also work with b-w-b and your chrome hardware. Win win win.

I've been after one of these since they first released this model - the So-Cal - and finally saw one at the right price, did a bit of financial juggling and here it is. The neck on these are the real selling point, oil finished quartersawn maple, very nicely rolled and within a couple of minutes it feels like a neck you've known all your life. This is what Fender should be putting on the strat. Of course, being Fender, they have to do something stupid and, in this case, the truss rod adjuster is the type you have to remove the neck in order to adjust. Still, it sounds superb, plays oh so nicely, I'm quite chuffed.
Don't think you can leave feedback for a non-sale..?
Why not, though? If you were dealing with someone and they backed out of a commitment to buy, surely that's worthy of feedback?
-
Leave the appropriate feedback for them, other than that I'm not sure what else you can do other than vent a little.

There's a site over here which is notorious for lowballers and offers of ridiculous trades even if you specify no trades. Recently I had one guy offer me €30 for a Boss TU-2 I wasn't even selling One chap was selling a Markbass Little Mark 2 with an asking price of €395. This was the first reply
€200 Offered Don't even play bass. . . .so offer 200
They use quartersawn on a lot of Charvel necks, not strictly Fender but still FMIC owned

Prong - Prove You Wrong It's a lovely album to play along to, to keep the fingers up to speed, and his tone is deliciously filthy. Very much a departure for its time, I still listen to it a lot and can seldom resist the urge to pick up a bass and play along.

Those decals look incredibly cheap, like a 99p ebay deal.

I use the light on my phone to illuminate the back. Most cabs I've found labelled, the only one which wasn't was an old mono Marshall 4x12 but they're usually 16ohm. Sometimes you just have to suck it up. We often played four band shows. Take seven or eight guitarists with a 4x12 each and another four bass cabs and you start running out of room for everyone else.
So you're quite happy about plugging your nice amp into someone else's completely unknown cabs? How do you know that they are even going to be the right impedance for your head?
I check the label on the back
-
I generally don't mind if it's someone I know and/or trust. The format over here is frequently that the support bands will use the headline band's cabs with their own heads so you see both sides of the coin. Respect someone else's gear the same way you'd respect your own and you'll never have trouble. At one gig though the support band's amp failed during their soundcheck so I let the guy use my (very new and rather expensive) Fryette head. After the gig I didn't even get a thank you out of him, which soured the whole thing. Still, we were playing with another band I knew personally and their guitarist was having head trouble, I loaned him the Fryette and he was very gracious and thankful - and I got to hear what it sounded like properly out front

does anyone regret selling their first bass
Doctor J replied to SidVicious1978's topic in General Discussion
No, no regrets, I don't play sentiment. The gear you have is part of a journey and I much prefer the gear I have now.... ...which will probably change over the years too. -
So in summary i appear to have a 1978 Fender (post CBS) Ash bodied bass with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard...I also have the chrome bridge and pick up covers. Anybody know what I could hope to get for this should I wish to sell it?
Nope, it's not post CBS, it is CBS.
