A grand seems like a lot of money for a bass CNCed in the far east, although I noticed the other day that the top end Sire Marcus Miller's are heading in that direction. Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but a couple of years ago you could get a part custom built Maruscyck for that kind of cash.

Sounds like you know pretty much exactly what you want, but are just unsure which brand to go with. Bass Direct have a pretty impressive selection. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Preamps_onboard.html Try dropping them an email to see if they've got any suggestions. If I was upgrading I'd probably go for the Aguilar OBP3,because I love their amps, they also do an external preamp/DI stomp box based on the same tech. I don't think it comes with an active/passive switch but if you get a tech to install it, they should be able to sort that out for you

Perhaps you're looking at the wrong end of the chain? It might be worth trying out a few amps/cabs/combos with your current bass if you can, maybe you can find a sound you like more.

[/quote] I think it's a pretty common story. I'd reached a plateau in my progress, I just found myself playing the same old stuff and I was getting frustrated with my lack of progress. Learning to slap opened up a different, more percussive mind set which actually crossed over in to all the other areas of my playing and refired my enthusiasm for the instrument.

Love a bit of slap. Learning how to play it really helped me get out of the rut I was in at the time as well.

Difficult to go wrong with the the B1on and a 20 quid pair of senheisser headphones.

Currently I have three four strings. I'm hopefully adding a 4 string fretless in December or January. At some vague point in the future I'll almost certainly get a 6 string bass, but that may require some saving up.

Depending on who's doing what I tend to gravitate to build diaries. It's the Basschat eqivalent of 'slow TV'. Despite having no practical skills of my own it's incredibly satisfying watching master craftsmen start with a few bits of wood then, over a period of weeks or months, turn out an incredible instrument.

My natural VM70s Natural Jazz has similar mods and comes in at bob on 9lbs.
