Agree with your last comment Chris. I enjoyed it. There are quite a few members here who are contemporarys of Roger and Pete and, in some cases, older. According to most of you who posted criticism it seems that anyone in their later years of life should pack up gigging. In your dreams sunshine. Long may they continue, I know I shall. As for bands without all their original members how about The Rolling Stones, Bad Company, The Yardbird, and Doctor Feelgood have none of the originals.
I think the criticism has been of the performance rather than the age. The singer in my favourite band is 55 yet still puts in a hyper dynamic performance at every gig.
When Townshend hits that guitar after nearly 50 years of playing and his fingernails fly off - it means he has passion and belief and that he gives everything to the audience and to his performance
or it means he needs to refine his guitar technique (or up the sanatogen!)

I had a Traynor 60w valve bass combo. It was quite old and heavy and had limited tonal options but it made a beautiful sound, lots of bottom end without sounding muffled - I used it with a USA Jazz. Loved it but it wasn't loud enough to gig with.

"Core Tone" isn't very important in your bass.
You can, of course, have too much tone..or too many options. All my basses are active although 2 can be played passive. The passive tone is lacking to a degree but very usable with my amp flat. The pre's have a lot of scope, and the para EQ on the amp is pretty flexiable as well, but this could get confusing if I messed with both I could spend hours going round and round in circles trying to make sense of that lot.. so I get 3 core sounds from the basses to reflect playing styles and the woods do contribute here, but the goal is simplicity and quickness to achieve... I EQ the basses off the pre amps and don't touch the amp..bar the volume If I need to go passive, then I start from a position that makes more sense to boast or cut what I might need....but with passives, it is mostly a boast I have never been happier with the sounds since I stopped messing with the amp.. but.....when tweaking and exploring you need to make little subtle changes, IMV, and not big sweeping knob twiddling
thing is, I'm the opposite, I have never been happier since I stopped messing with the bass, hence 1 pup and no tone control. We all may take different paths but so long as they lead us to the right destination. Or at least take us where we want to go. -
I'm sorry Nig but you are being utterly deluded in this instance, everyone knows that pineapple on a pizza is plain wrong.
+1 fruit has no business being on a pizza. and before anyone says tomato is a fruit, I'm with the U.S. Supreme Court who on May 10, 1893 declared that the tomato is a vegetable, based on the popular definition that classifies vegetables by use, that they are generally served with dinner and not dessert (Nix v. Hedden (149 U.S. 304)) -
so aslong as YOU are happy with YOUR TONE and YOUR bass, thats all that matters!
thinking about it, I haven't liked my tone in my last 2 bands. Thing is it worked in the band context, and sounded great with the guitars, but bass on it's own I didn't like. -

disagree with Siddix that the future is digital - it doesn't have to be, but with him on the tone thing. I designed my custom Shuker for simplicity. 1 pup and no tone controls. The pup has been extra wound and is hum cancelling so it pushes out a sound I can do what I want with. Everything else was designed for posing though -
that looks like a great piece of work. would the constant loading/unloading of tension on the strings kill them quicker?
DB strings tend to last years. Many years. So even if if it does knock 2 years of a lifetime of 10 years it's still not too bad.

As the title says. I've sent this to the Akai Ask A Question. The Deep Impact synth bass pedal is still sought after and prices on ebay are usually always over £300.00 so there is obviously a market for it. Why won't Akai make it again? I'll post the reply.
Thanks MacD, I do have the booklet but the sample settings are all heavy metal-ish settings (Twiggy Ramirez, Trujillo in Ozzy's band, Rex Brown in Pantera) so I figured these would be a bit too in-your-face for what I am after
yeah see what you mean. I tend to use the Rex one as a base, then adjust accordingly.

do you have the booklet with it? It gives sample settings for a few players. If you don't have it pm me an email an I'll scan it and send you it.
Very often Stewart Lee is a prize twat, and I'd rather eat my own liver than watch his TV show, but christ he was bang on the money with that quote. Yes, PC does go mad sometimes, but only at its extremes. The likes of the Daily Mail would have you believe that everything about PC is wrong and evil and designed to turn the so-called white middle classes into oppressed minorities. Utter bollocks. At heart, it is a good thing... it's just that some people don't know when to stop. I'm old enough to remember when the Race Relations Act was first discussed and then introduced in the mid 70s. Incredibly, it was coloquially referred to at the time as the 'N*ggers W*gs and C**ns act' -- such were national attitudes then, even within certain sections of the media. Imagine if absolutely no forms of PC existed, no anti-prejudice legislation or race relations legislation, nothing. Imagine that? the BNP can.
if it's black, and it's a board, who am I offending by calling it a blackboard? Especially as if it's white and it's a board I'm allowed to call it a whiteboard. (I've read this is urban myth, well it happened at my school in the 80's!) I disagree he was bang on with that quote, I think he is been divisive. The issue of blame however lies with the decision makers who took something that was good and needed, and turned it in something to exploit for political gain.

Guns n Roses - Don't Cry. Terrible bit of fret buzz 5sec. it's really noticeable on Spotify and original recordings, but not so noticeable when compressed on Youtube etc.
Just to make it easier .. It really worries me that 84% of this audience agrees with that statement, because the kind of people that say "political correctness gone mad" are usually using that phrase as a kind of cover action to attack minorities or people that they disagree with. I'm of an age that I can see what a difference political correctness has made. When I was four years old, my grandfather drove me around Birmingham, where the Tories had just fought an election campaign saying, "if you want a n****** for a neighbour, vote Labour," and he drove me around saying, "this is where all the niggers and the coons and the jungle bunnies live." And I remember being at school in the early 80s and my teacher, when he read the register, instead of saying the name of the one asian boy in the class, he would say, "is the black spot in," right? And all these things have gradually been eroded by political correctness, which seems to me to be about an institutionalised politeness at its worst. And if there is some fallout from this, which means that someone in an office might get in trouble one day for saying something that someone was a bit unsure about because they couldn't decide whether it was sexist or homophobic or racist, it's a small price to pay for the massive benefits and improvements in the quality of life for millions of people that political correctness has made. It's a complete lie that allows the right, which basically controls media now, and international politics, to make people on the left who are concerned about the way people are represented look like killjoys. And I'm sick, I'm really sick-- 84% of you in this room that have agreed with this phrase, you're like those people who turn around and go, "you know who the most oppressed minorities in Britain are? White, middle-class men." You're a bunch of idiots.
or maybe they are just the kind of people - to take Birmingham as an example again - who wonder why at the university during the world cup, the English students had to take their flags down, but the foreign students didn't have to. Or why the CAMRA beer festival in Birmingham is not allowed to have directions to it's location. Some things in life are obviously wrong and unfair, but Stewart Lee is an idiot if he thinks political correctness hasn't caused problems, problems which certain political parties are happy to exploit. BTW I'm sure the BBC has always been accused of a left wing bias?
