I don't plan on using the headphone out anyway, it was just to make sure the amp was working before i took it to rehearsals, but it is a shame it's not better designed.

Ah yes, I did notice that when we stopped playing. Not really bothered bothered about it but it's a shame they are so loud. I'm sure with better fans the noise could be kept down. I was quite surprised at how hot the top of the amp got, and we were only rehearsing in a smallish room. Master on about 12, gain A on about 11. I suppose we do practice quite loud, although the bass didn't sound that loud, and it's below the Drums in the recording I made. Still, it's early days for me, but I do love the tone so I'm not going to be changing heads for a few years.

Congrats on the new head. I got a MB800 this week. So far ive only used it once through my Barefaced BB2 but i love the tone. Its not a cutting and brittle as i had imagined. Ill need to cover a lot of 60's and Motown stuff with it but i feel it will handle these tones well, even though GK isnt really known for warm and round. It seems very versatile. It seems very hissy through the headphone jack but other than that its definitely a keeper and im much happier with the tone compared to my Markbass F1/VTBass set up.....so far.

Basswood.. should i be scared? Cv60s bridge question too
you could buy a set of threaded saddles and just replace the saddles. Then you can adjust the spacing the way you like it.
Or buy a nicer looking bridge and do it in about 10mins. -
Class D amps - not impressed, bought this Trace instead

Although ive only had one rehearsal with um new GKMB800 im loving it so far. Much more "me" than the Markbass F1 ive been using for a few years. It seems to have the kick and punch the F1 definitely doesn't have, and needed a pre amp in front to bring tu to life, Both are great in their own way but it shows that class D is not a one tone system. -

I think the fact that the BBOST isn't as wide as the HM bridge isn't an indication of the hole spacing. The first time the bridge on my CVP was changed I got thre Gallery to do it, as I had read that it wasn't a streight swap. They were the ones that put their BBOT on for me. I was very surprised when I took the BBOT off to put the Gotoh on and saw the same holes had been used. I don't think they would have done this if it had been the wrong way of doing it. I suppose the outer screws might be at a very, very slight angle but the edges of the holes are not damaged or enlarged, and all 5 screws are screws down flush. There are others that have done this over on Talkbass, I'm not the only one. Maybe Squier change something over the years. Mine were brought very early on. -

This probably doesn't help but its all i have at the moment. -

Both my CV bridges are 20mm spacing, that was my reason for changing them as i prefer 19mm. If i can still find a bridge at home ill take some measurements. -
Worth a punt, I like 'em. Makes you realise that every string set you've used so far has had a wildly tense 'D' and 'G' string and that you've been sub-consciously compensating for it all this time. Nice strings.
Yep, pretty much all that. I was dubious before i got my first set, now i have them on all my basses (and have done for quite a while.). I probably wouldnt worry if i didnt have them, but i do prefer them given the choice.
The CV 60s hi mass bridge has 20mm string spacing and different mounting holes to a standard BBOT. The screws holes are slightly wider apart and would need to be filled and redrilled. It's very annoying, I don't know why they did this.
This is not the case, or at least not on my CVP and CV Jazz. Both took a BBOT, and then a Gotoh 201 without any need for drilling or filling. The holes are very slightly, and i mean very slightly different, but neither of my basses needed any re drilling or filling. Maybe not all CV's are the same. -
I think you need to read the claims in context. All the posts I have seen do that. What I do conclude though is that amp power figures are quoted to many different standards.
Im talking about those who say things like they had to be taken out of the PA in a 200 strong bar playing blues and rock covers because they were too loud. Mainly on Talkbass, not here. -
Its worth bearing in mind that the real world power required to be "loud enough" can vary massively between different players purely by virtue of how they use low bass frequency EQ in their sound and thats before you considered all the other variables such as genre loudness and sensibleness of other band members. With the OPs setup of an amp at the very bottom of the class-D power spectrum and a smallish marginally effecient cab (and presumably an 8ohm on to boot) its entirely feasible that it couldnt cut the mustard, but then it might be fine for another player for all reasons I outlined above.
Oh yeas, we all need different things and can get away with different levels etc depending on the situation. I just find sometimes people can get over enthusiastic and make it sound like the laws of physics have finally been broken. -
I do admit i was worried about the BB2 description before getting it. I thought ti would be so clear i would hate hearing everything crystal clear. Fret buzz/clank etc. I was very harpy to find out that this wasn't the case, or at least didst have to be. That tweeter is more like taking a pillow off your head. it makes things clearer without over emphasising the upper mids like my old cabs used to. Im hoping the MB800 will just add a bit more clarity, ill certainly have more head room. Quite looking forward to having a new tone signautre, and i know with this cab it will make a difference.
Purchased myself a TC Electronic BH250 and an Eden EX210 cab at Christmas. While initially impressed with the volume, I took this to a large venue for a gig - and then another sizeable room for a jam with 2 guitarists and a drummer. It did not hold it's own. I get this is probably the cheapest class D head out there, but the reviews led me to believe it was more than loud enough for big gigs - probably my naivety.
I read that quite a bit about gear, i think it needs taking with a pinch of salt on web forums. Ive been reading loads of reports recently how a certain 1x10 does the same. Hard to believe sometimes. -
Ive just ordered a GK MB800 head to give my BB2 a proper workout.. As much as ive liked using MarkBass for the past 8 years its time to give GK another try. My BB2 is also the first 8 ohms cab ive had in many years. Since getting the BB2 its really helped me get back inspiration and enjoyment in playing live. I think i got bogged down with changing basses where as it was the cab that i didnt really get on with (although it was a great cab). Now i can hear things a lot clearer its a lot more fun playing live.

Ive never tired any other Yamaha so i cant really say, but the 304/5 and 504/5 have different pups to each other.
-
Maybe bland is too strong a word, but when i was trying out the 305 and 505 together i liked the tone of the 305 more. The reason i want for the 505 was the nicer look (dont like gloss much) and the fact that the bass would run without a battery if needed.
-
I had the TRBX505 for a while. Loved the feel and oval look. I thought the tone was quite bland, lacked character, but that worked well with tone shaping pedals so it was never really an issue. Still tempted to get a 504 at some point.

My thoughts on this are what might be sound on paper can sometimes make bugger all difference in the real world.. Considering the P bass is probably the most recorded electric bass im not sure if this is just a case of change for changes sake.

What do you do when you've found The One?
dave_bass5 replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
Over the years I've amassed a nice collection of basses, all of which have been gigged regularly. But a few months ago I bought a Sandberg VM5 that, for me, is just perfect. It's exactly the sound I've been looking for. It's now my only gigging bass. So now, I don't know what to do with the other basses. I've spent a lot of time (and money, but don't tell the wife) getting them and they're all fantastic in their own way - but I know that they just aren't going to get the use they deserve. So do I thin the herd and take a massive loss selling them? Or hold onto them for the occasional rehearsal? Anyone else been in a similar position?
Ive just found what i will call "the One". My new (to me) Fender P. All my other basses have been bagged up and taken in to work to store, never to be used again.......until i realise the can never really only be one. While im over the moon with my P, i also like Jazz basses, and quite often fancy a play on a 5 string. This has nothing to do with the P bass lacking anything, just that i cant limit myself to only using one tone (you know what i mean) for the rest of my life. Just aint going to happen. -
I had a VM PJ for a while. Lovely looking bass and fit and finish were great. I always felt the tone lacked something though. Even putting a Fralin (taken out of my CVP), and later a Geezer Buttler pup in never really helped.

I've always found Thomanns to have outstanding customer service. Couple this with Sire's and you really can't lose IME. Glad it worked out for the OP.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the washer indicating any thing. My volume/tone has them as well.
