Sleaford Mods, excellent, unsafe, sipid and almost old enough to be grandparents.

Short Scale 'Thing' (23" scale Headless 4 string)
Frank Blank replied to Jabba_the_gut's topic in Build Diaries
@Jabba_the_gut don’t let me leave the SW Bash without me trying one of your shorties, I’m thinking one of those might be my second purchase from you (before you become my personal luthier). -
We are not, none of us, worthy. Carol Kaye is, imho, top of the shop.

He isn’t a seriously good drummer. It isn’t all about ability, if he isn’t present he’s a crap drummer. Sack him, quickly.

I thrapped away on something else in my bedroom as a teenager, something even more understandable.

I’m not a huge fan of the Beatles nor of Macca (or Sir Thumbsaloft as he’s referred to in these parts) but he played interesting melodic and most importantly totally song-serving bass lines in some of the most important songs ever written, that, to me, makes him a top drawer bass player. Give me that over virtuosity or ‘technique’ every time.

We all inserted our own terms when we got to this bit.

Finished Pics! Andyjr1515 meets his Nemesis?
Frank Blank replied to Andyjr1515's topic in Build Diaries
I saw a partial tit in the garden this morning, it was missing its 4th knob. -
It wouldn’t... I think the majority of the component parts are made abroad then shipped to Germany for assembly with the minimum amount of German made components to legally allow it to be sold as a ‘German’ product. i think everyone is on the right track, they look lovely but that’s it, certainly the case at their price point.
-
I have been led to believe that the components are made cheaply outside of Germany, imported in and then assembled there allowing it to be classed as a German product. I know a few people who have them and are non-plussed considering the price.

Useful article on compression and how it affects timbre
Frank Blank replied to 51m0n's topic in Effects
Fascinating. I’m just about to change preamp from one with on board compression to one without so I’ll need a separate compressor, so this is really interesting and extremely useful, thank you. -
Remotely controlled, imagine a furry drone...

I only need enough to swing quite a small cat.

How do you know if you're any good?!
Frank Blank replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Most people, in most of their endeavours, in most fields feel imposter syndrome in one form or another, I think people that don’t are perhaps at best insensitive and at worst arrogant. Don’t let it stop you is the most important it to remember, just keep doing yo’ thang. -
Everyone brings their own amplification, I suppose it depends how much room there is!

Indeed so, I’m a great admirer of his playing.

Excellent, he’s superb.

The very acme of good bass playing for me, simple and song-serving, a far more important skill than virtuosity, for me.

I concur, a Jazz. This reminds me of the great bass tone on early Public Image Ltd recordings, especially Metal Box, Jah Wobble with the Ovation Magnum Bass. Allegedly he played through an Ampeg rig that faced the wall of the studio and had a microphone behind. I wish I knew which basses and rigs were used by Floyd Lawson and Vivian Weathers on Linton Kwesi Johnson’s second and third albums Forces of Victory and Bass Culture, my very favourite bass on any reggae album. I’m putting the Samsara video up (again) but only because I’m not sure what bass he’s playing..?
