1.
thanks for the heads up on those flat pack kits its always been the woodcutting element that has put me off a BFM cab no excuses now!
Are the flatpacks available here in the UK? When I looked at them, the company seemed to be shipping to the US only. Even if they weren't, can imagine the international shipping being a bit expensive.
  2.
I agree with the comments about the neck dive, either counterbalance or / and a good strap will overcome any problems.
I used comfort strapps. They work great to stop slipping and spread the weight of heavier basses. T
  3. Looks fantastic. I used to have a couple of G&L ASAT's. One was a semi-hollow which looked, played and sounded fantastic. So wish I'd not got rid of it. Regarding neck-dive, I think you'll be surprised. My ASAT's balanced fine, possibly in part to me using "grippy" straps. Maybe if it bothers you too much, look at using Ultralite tuners if at all possible. T
  4. Looks like Ashdown have created a cab carrying/golf trolley hybrid too...
From The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton has finished talks with Mr Gooday and is now the owner of an ABM900 and 8x10 cab for FTJ tours. Hope he manages to keep his trademark sound!
5.
Is Bruce tall or is the Ashdown 8x10 smaller than the Ampeg version? Admittedly, it's been a while since I got rid of my Ampeg 8x10 but I could swear it was taller than "mid-waist". Of course if he's 6ft 13in, I'm talking out me 'harris....
Yes. Answered my own question by comparing them..... The Ampeg's the taller cabinet. Approximately 1219mm vs 1150mm of the Ashdown. The Ampeg's less deep but wider. I really need to get out more.

  7.
More love the Nathan East signature here.. this time BBNE2
Ummmmmmmm. Love the detail touches like the tuners and the bridge looks awesome. The BBNE is a through-neck 35" isn't it? It'd be interesting to compare the original humbuckers with the jazz like pickups on the 2.
  8. Here's my Yamaha Nathan East Signature. It's a Mk 1 brought new around about 1994 to 1995. All original apart from the preamp. I found the original Yamaha one to be the only weak point in the otherwise stunning bass. It was replaced with a Bartolini 3 band not long after recording with it for the first time. The Yamaha preamp just seemed a bit hissy, even when flat. Once the Bartolini was in it, it was like night and day. A brilliant bass even better. It's been my only constant, I've had so many basses come and gone but I've always hung onto this. Guess it's because it was my first "serious" instrument, all the previous basses I had seemed a bit amateur to this. I'm proud of the fact that every single dent and mark, scuff and ding, is mine. Particularly the couple of dozen cufflink dents on the upper horn where i got carried away pounding it on a new years eve gig! Realised as I'm typing that I really should take it out more. Seem to play 4's mostly with a pick nowadays as I'm in a rock covers band but I think there's a case for taking it out next rehearsal and getting the love back ;-)
  9.
No worries, it's fine! I spoke to Ashdown about the power rating, and all of them are 1200w and they said it needs to be changed on their website. As for the Neo speakers, haven't a clue whats going on, sounds sweet as though!
So much lovely gear, so little space in the garage and so little spare cash :-( With this stunning Ashdown 810 and the other Ampeg 810AV for sale, I'm starting to get some lust for another big cab. Think the best sound I ever had was when I had my Ampeg 810 and whilst I know the downside is the practicality of moving such a large box, it always sounded and looked so amazing. For better or worse, I think I'll always be an "old skool big heavy cabs are better" guy. Re whether or not it's neo equipped, the Ashdown site says the neo cabs are approx 60kg. What's the weight of this one? T
  10.
The pic of the back plate clearly states that the speakers are Nd.... Its confusing though, as the USA ceramic cab is rated at 1600W and the UK Neo at 1050W - whereas this one says 1200W on the back plate...
Oh yeah! I should look a bit closer shouldn't I? Agreed, think the Ashdown site giving conflicting information is a bit confusing. Sorry TLeonard91, we've hijacked your thread a bit. Best of luck with the sale. Looks like a mighty fine cab! T
  11. Was it stored in the house next door to Alice.....?
  12.
MB1. ....Its got lightweight Neodymium speakers in it! BUMP!
Don't think it's a neo cab. Ashdown do a Neo810 (shown here) but this looks like it's one of the USA cabs with the standard ceramic drivers. Here's the link to the USA 810: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=220
  13. Great tune, great album. Think it's pretty simple, I believe Garry Beers drops the E to D to give that signature bottom note during the verse. Saw them ages ago on TV and he had a Hipshot on his P-bass. T
  14. I wouldn't use the mic input, there's much better and more flexible ways of inputting into Garageband. If you don't want to go down the more expensive FireWire route, there's loads of cheapish USB audio input devices out there. I've had a Line6 UX-2 for a while as a cheapy knocking-about USB input device and it works brilliantly. Couple of jack inputs, some mic inputs, some midi and loads of options for outputs. Comes with the GearBox application which gives you loads of tinkering options (in fact, looks like they've updated it since i got mine). http://uk.line6.com/podstudioux2/ Again though, there's probably loads of other options out there that probably do the same thing. T

  16.
Phil Collins? Oh dear, dear, dear dear, dear.
He was on The One Show on BBC1 the other night. It wasn't until the last couple of minutes that I realised who it was. Thought it was Jim Bowen. I kid you not....
  17.
If you're in any doubt, I recommend sending a mail to EMG support. I think the guy I usually end up chatting to, Rick is always very helpful and knows his stuff. - I have seen EMG harmesses and components come up on eBay - so hopefully armed with the necessary component information, you might be able to pick up a bargain.
Thanks for the advice Dan, just dropped them an email. T
  18. In terms of whereabouts, who's got it now? Really keen to get my hands on the Compact to see how it sounds. T
  19.
Exactly the same is true with their HD350. 350 watts... but more than capable of keeping up (and staying clean) with other amps rated (on paper at least) at twice the wattage.
Exactly. I've never found myself wanting more volume from my HD350, even on the biggest gigs. Paired with my EBS cabs, they're super loud and clean. Just wish the flipping things were a bit lighter!
  20. Hi All, I want to replace the 2 x VOL configuration on my EMG BTS EQ equipped Spector with a VOL and PAN. At the same time as I've got the back open, I want to replace the other pots too. Reason? I've had the preamp for years and it's been in and out of a few of my basses. The centre indents on the bass and treble tone controls now feel a little indistinct so would like to return them to "new feel". Does anyone know the type of pots for the vol/pan/bass/treble I should be ordering (and places where I can get them)? Aside from 25k audio taper, I've not got a clue. Cheers T
  21.
do you mean it's a commission sale?
Phil traded it against his US Spector so it's not a commission sale. Ultimately, it's OK sitting here listening to us all give opinions on costs etc but these are just that, opinions. If you really love it, it maybe worth seeing what deal they can do on it. If you don't ask, you don't get and these are tough times so there's probably some movement for them. Depends if they want your business. I'm guessing the price is the only reason it's been stuck on the wall for so long as it's an otherwise fabulous instrument. T
  22.
yep - tried it? The more I think about it, the more I think PMT are just being proper greedy - they're gr8 guys there, but I think it's a wee bit exploitative
The PMT Thumb is Phil's (AlfieNoakes) old bass. It maybe worth dropping him a PM about it. Having owned a couple of them, I'd say it's a fabulous bass and a great example of a Thumb but I'd agree with the other comments about the cost. Typical "used gear in a shop" price. T
  23.
Hows the project looking now tony?
Ain't had a lot of time to devote to it over the past couple of weeks. Have been doing some research though on paint. In terms of getting the large sparkle flake done, seems to be very few sources where i can get the large flake in aerosol because of the practicalities of getting a large enough nozzle on the aerosol can to stop the flakes clogging the tip. May have to compromise on the size of the flake size if i'm going down the rattle can route but hey, that's not a show stopper. There's these people who seem to do the right colour and a smaller size of flake. http://www.specialistpaints.com/product.php?p=flakes-canz As a plan B, been thinking of bottling it and maybe doing an olympic white block colour with a dark red tort. However, I realise that it's probably not that much of a saving of time and hassle and I know I'll regret not doing the flake finish. In terms of parts, need to have a think as to what I'm gonna go for. I'll give Andy at Wizard a call when I'm back off my hols and get the pickup organised. Want something really hot and aggressive but with a bit of mid range presence. Did think of looking at one of the East P-Retro things but I'll suck it and see with the traditional straight ahead vol/tone passive first. Will order the paint over the weekend and make a start on the prepping. As the body is alder, I'm going to grain fill it whether it needs it or not, just to make sure the paint doesn't sink into it. To be honest, the painting isn't the part I dislike, it's all the prep and finish sanding afterwards. Bit of a lazy b*stard I am. T
  24.
Gold sparkle is so tacky............................heres mine. It's currently being modified to fit Precision & Soap bar Pickups and a modified Precision scratch plate.
I like "tacky" but "so tacky" is even better because it's more! Great looking bass with the pearloid scratch plate. Did the body come painted like that or did you get it sprayed? T
  25. Hi All, After weeks of ummming and arring (is that how you spell it?), I've finally started my Adam Clayton-esque sparkle precision project. I've been such a fan of sparkle finishes, my Modulus Flea (now gone to Philly) always looked fantastic onstage. After seeing U2 last year, I decided I really wanted either a Jazz or Precision sparkle. Having just got myself a Lakland Joe Osbourn, having a P-Bass is now the obvious choice because the Jazz side of things is covered. Currently, using these as a visual reference.... I've just had delivered the body and neck from CH Guitars. After doing lots of digging, they seem to be really great value. Good price but excellent construction and materials. Pickup wise, think I'm gonna go for a Wizard Area 51. Had one of these before and they're fabulous. Really in your face wide open but with the volume and tone rolled off, they still have that love Precision vintage tone. Besides which, Andy is such a genius, it's nice to purchase something that's been virtually hand- and custom-made. Bridge and tuner wise, I'm going for Wilkinson, Hipshot or Badass. Already got be a Hipshot Bass Xtender so it makes sense to stick with Hipshot but the Wilkinson stuff is competitively priced and really good. In terms of the fretboard, I've ordered some block marker stickers. Noticed there's been a couple of basses for sale recently with these fitted and they're an easier alternative to having "proper" binding. Nothing ventured, nothing gained so I've brought a couple of sets. Finishing wise, still in two minds. I really like the challenge of doing the large metal flake sparkle finish myself but it's not gonna be easy. Need to see what the options are regarding "flakes in a spray can". Perhaps I can hire a spray gun and mix my own paint/colour. Alternatively, rather than making a complete f*ck up, I could just get it professionally done and pay for it. Dunno yet. Need to do some homework. As ever, suggestions are welcomed. Alternatively, I could just bottle it and go for a block colour. Like the idea of a black with either a black or dark tort scratchplate. But I know I'll then kick myself for not having the sparkle done. Here's some pics of the neck and body.... Getting quite excited! Tony
