Haha thanks It's not too expensive (maybe not a good idea to discuss exact figures) but it shouldn't be a hard figure to meet. any extra can go to either basschat or charity. The uni was a good idea, but the pub is more practical (nice big car park, i don't think the uni has one does it?), and the pub has a bar
If we're talking NTU then it kind of does. Theres a cheap and safe NCP right over the road on Talbot Street. Drivers to the Bass Bash should note that its a short-ish walk from the Forest Park and Ride (FREE) to the Grosvenor (The P & R is a good navigation point anyway). Theres also a tram stop there.

Wikipedia agrees http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Precision_Bass " The double bass was considered difficult to play in tune, physically cumbersome and difficult to transport. It was becoming hard to hear in increasingly large bands or in bands that included amplified electric guitars. With electric pickups, a small body and fretted neck, the Precision Bass overcame these problems. The name "Precision" came from the use of frets (as opposed to the fretless fingerboard of the double bass); players of the electric instruments could play in tune much more easily - they could play with "precision." thats perfect for me at least, thanks.

can you tell me whether this is likely to be during the day, or an evening fixture?

not valentines weekend please.

Why dont you use some double-sided sticky tape to hold it on for a bit and see if you like it - you can always drill the holes when you've made up your mind? Very hard to un-drill holes... edit: too late - note to self - always read to the end of the thread

I know vaguely where the Clarendon College is - is the Grosvenor a hotel or a pub? We are talking the junction on Hucknall Road and the Mansfield Road right? If so, thats about 50 feet from my first digs in Nottingham many years ago... EDIT - found it - on the left as you go past Clarendon before you turn off left to Hucknall Road. I dont mind any saturday or sunday but wont be able to come if its the 14th Feb (for obvious reasons) or any other day that friday/weekend/monday as its my partner's birthday. It would seem sensible to avoid the same date as the Yorkshire one anyway. Week before/after perhaps?
Considering the yorkshire bass bash has now been arranged for the 15th of feb, does that mean there are some people that might not comes to the notts one now? and can those that want to come give me some idea of a preferred weekend/day (saturday or sunday? Thanks
I didnt even know there was one a few months ago but then I havent been here that long. I'll probably make it as long as it isnt a weekday. I live just north of nottingham so it isnt a hardship. Where is the Grosvenor? Is this the Old Queens Moat House or somewhere else I know by another name? Google isnt being very helpful. What goes on? Are there stands or is it all just a big jam and GAS-by-proxy session? I have a CIJ 62 RI jazz

Copper shielding might help? My (passive) Jazz is now very, very quiet since I used low impedance copper foil throughout (got it on Ebay) - I also did find a major culprit was simply sitting too close to the amp - being three feet away rather than two made all the difference.
-
It really depends if you are passing it off as your own work, IMHO. I play things when jamming with the drum machine that I realise sound a bit like something I've heard, I think everyone does it. I do think what you play is a distillation of talent, imagination and influences and I've not sure its always an exact 3 way split.

do consider also that EB may not be the only people with IP rights over the general 4+1, 3+1 designs - there could be other manufactuers or one man band operations out there who hold rights on a variant. I must admit I didnt know what manufacturer you were talking about, and dont know what your design looks like. A lot depends on just how much like the original it is.
I've come up with a unique headstock design that is getting a far bit of attention and a lot suggestions to copyright it. Basically I took a standard design from a very well known licenced reproduction and converted it to my needs. I've had a look on copyrightservice.co.uk and my design seems to meet the criteria. The thing is, I'm not sure exactly what it is I need to copyright. I mean can you copyright holes? Am I constrained by the precise dimensions of my design or is it the concept (I'd much prefer this) that I need to protect?
I have a shiny LLB (Hons) from the best Law university after Oxford and Cambridge. I did my dissertation in Intellectual Property, but will have to give your question some thought as Design Rights (which is actually what this is) isnt a major part of the Syllabus. It kind of depends what you've changed and how close you are can you PM me and I'll send you an email address to send some JPegS to ? I think the worst you might get is a CAD (Cease and Desist) letter as a warning but thats often a putoff.

How many of you are converted (successful) guitarists?
Geek99 replied to Jamesemt's topic in General Discussion
I started off on guitar, then drifted off as my hands were too clumsy. I've now sold all my guitars and just have two basses. I too, as another poster commented, listen to all the instruments. -
Vintage Stingray copy CIJ 62 Ri jazz in s3b they do it all so dont need more.

I have a Vintage Stingray copy - its a nice instrument that plays well. Only complaint is that it isnt very loud , despite being active - my CIJ jazz is actually louder.
Thanks Guys Eventually bit the bullet and checked with my Daughter (well about time she realised that Santa wasn't real!) and she seems happy (hard to tell at her age - don't tell me its because she is a bassist!!) with the zoom.
I have one, its great, with the drum machine, tuner and amp modelling. Quite sturdy enough for most uses.
I liked the active 5 string (AVB??) and they made a really good passive MAB 5 string too.
MAB-20 I think - if its the same one. I regret selling it now

it is a bit 80's looking for my taste I did have an Aria Magna, which was a lovely bass.
-
its the only jazz bass I've really played so I cant tell if its sounding thin or not. Its doesnt sound particularly thin. I'm comparing it to a active Stingray copy and its louder than that. I did the foil shielding last night, and my zoom's noise reduction now kills the noise at setting 6 to 7 rather than at 9, so it has made a difference. Didnt notice a change in tone, as some assert occurs. Please do also note that I havent checked the shielding fully for continuity as my multimeter died. Its also possible that some of the common causes such as being near a light switch, dodgy lead may still apply.
-
Because if it was because they were single-coil the noise wouldn't be dependent on the setting of the bass's volume controls. I may be wrong but the way I read Geek's post it was only a problem when they weren't fully on.
exactly correct. Its pretty much equally noisy all the time. I wouldnt want to play a gig (ie gig volume) with it as noisy as it is, yet people use Jazz basses in gigs all the time. I know that there is some noise from a single coil, but I think I have an abnormal quantity of it. the noise disappears when they are at equal volume, regardless of whether that is full volume. I'm not sure that you two arent arguing the same point really.

Just took delivery of the copper tape (the conductive glue stuff mentioned in another thread) - will report.

jazz bass bridge earth ...not connected! Am I going to fry?
Geek99 replied to gafbass02's topic in Repairs and Technical
mine (a 62 Reissue CIJ) is connected to the bridge, I'm interested to hear that adhesive copper has reduced your hum levels as I took delivery of some copper tape just today and was wondering how much difference it would really make. . -
The Japanese Fenders are pretty good, if you can try one of them before you make a decision, you should.
yes, very underrated in my (owner) opinion.

I would have bought the VMJ - it was just pipped by a cheap CIJ 62 reissue off OldGit of this parish. My only regret is the pickup noise but it does have a wider range of tones as you said and its easy to get close to PBass tone with a Zoom unit.
