1. I'm with you all on the hand size thing - mine arent huge. I have a Stingray clone, and a CIJ jazz. The jazz is easier/more comfortable to play by a mile.
2.
If you have the skill to build your own, then Bill Fitzmaurice's designs are outstanding. For a £300 - £400 build cost you'll easily have something better than spending twice or three times that amount on a commercial offering. The plans are comprehensive and easy to follow, plus there's a lot of support on his forums for tech discussions. http://billfitzmaurice.net/
I'm slightly confused - do you have to make the loudspeakers yourself? I ask as he seems to talk about cabinet design but doesnt say what speakers to use - all the photos and drawings are of the cabinets. I thought loudspeakers used special paper and magnets and so on. EDIT: Okay, think I get it - these are the cabinet plans and you have to decide which speakers to put in? I'm not sure I'd know how to do the wiring for cross overs and so on.

Mutes

I did read that Jamerson used them, and I have read in many books that its worth using them. Apparenbtly a small piece of futon mattress near the bridge works well.
4. I like my Fender CIJ Jazz 62 ri - it does everything I need.
5. I found it in my local library - they may be talking about "Michael Manring Bass Guitar Learn to play Tuition DVD"
6. I know the cast are currently touring 'unplugged' and I had heard they themselves could play. Didn't know saxon did some if the heavy lifting though
7. I was just watching the Spinal Tap movie, I notice that Derek Smalls is playing an MV Pedulla with a PJ configuration. I really like the bass tone he's getting though; does anyone know just by the sound, or through exceptional knowledge of the movie whats making it so ? I'm thinking of "Hellhole" particularly. There's usually a stack of Marshalls behind him, but that doesnt really mean anything in a movie!
8. thanks - the replacement body is a good solution, but I'd feel bad selling it as a 62 Ri if it had a replacement body. I guess my question would be better phrased as "would someone notice that a bass was (re)sprayed in polyester rather than cellulose" -here I am assuming that it was done in cellulose to start with. I dont mind too much as I want to keep it, but I dont like destroying the value of something.
9. You should. Mine went one better and actually bought ME one.
10. I have a cij 62 ri jazz from 1994 and it "has mojo". I guess its painted in cellulose. If it gets a competent respray, does it matter value-wise on resale if the paint used is polyester with poly varnish/laquer? Its a sunburst
11. Yes I have one. Its quite trebbly, lwtait remarked that it sounded almost like a rickenbacker. I have no idea why its so trebbly and its the only thing I dislike One thing I did do was put copper shielding tape (off ebay) in all cavities. Quietened it down nicely. Edit : mine is completely standard. They sound best imho with bridge on full and neck off full by about 10%
12. hi - can anyone tell me if this is any good ? Behringer BX4410A ULTRABASS Bass Guitar Amp Combo I mean in terms of quality, tone, weight etc - price seems okay to me
13. Best Practice looks okay, but only seems to work with a Cd Edit : no I am wrong - see 'open file' button
14. My audacity install isn't showing me a graphic eq - just play, stop etc and some editing stuff like zoom and time tools - rest is greyed out
15. Someone mentioned here recently that Audacity can be used to isolate bass tracks - can this be done with mp3s, or do you neded a .ogg file derived from say, RockBand? I realise I could use the graphic eq and maybe filters to reduce the level of other instruments, I'm just wondering if there is a better way? thanks
16. no, the usual VVT setup. It has screw holes for the pickup cover drilled, but none fitted - there is no bridge cover fitted nor any holes. Someone may have fitted that beforeyou got yours. It has a gold fender logo with black bordering to the script letters. Note - my 62 Ri also has a hole drilled on back of headstock for a strap button, but no actual button fitted. That may be a clue. If not present on yours, maybe its a regular jazz? pics attached
17. I have a cij 62 ri also and its original sunburst finish (cellulose?) has mojo. I have a quote for a respray from a reputable workshop but they spray polyester/polyeurethane. Does anyone think the value would suffer much? It is otherwise completely original
18. Squier VMJ, and its under budget by quite a long way if you shop around.
19.
I had that with an old desk and old computer. I don't get it anymore.
Wrist pad and mouse pad made a world of difference to me.
20. Saw him play nottingham once , in a band called vinny peculiar
21. Yes if its a vintage one - I have never bothered - just di it slowly and let it settle each time. Check your tuning after each 1/8 turn
22. Short term _ You could try ibuprofen as this has an anti inflammatory effect - also consider buying a wheat bag. Really need to solve why this is happening though
23. Not tried yet - time pressures Will have to sit and figure chords first (I am a learner!)
24. Fortunately mine came correctly set - Do you mean the tuners wobble perpendicular to the headstock (in their sockets) or that hey move along the line of the headxstock? If the former, OldGit mentioned a fix with slices of coke can? Btw - I put copper shielding tape in mine and its very quiet
25. I've tried the latter one of those (fretted VMJ) - its lovely to play and the sound is very deep and funky. The only thing I didnt like was the shiny lacquer on the body.
