1.
What I mean is, when the J pickup is turned all the way down, would the bass sound different than if there was no J pickup at all? Is there any electronic reason for it sounding different?
With the J turned down, there is still the 250K resistance of the J volume pot connected across the jack. In theory, this could reduce treble compared to a situation in which J pickup and pot were not there (the 250k forms a low pass (= treble cut) filter with the p pickup's inductance). But I suspect the difference is subtle to a point where it may not be noticeable, it would depend on all the other components (inductance, resistance, lead length, amp input....) Assuming it is connected like this: http://www.seymourdu...ic=std_p_j_bass

 8.
Yorks5stringer, any chance of measuring the string spacing on your progressive 5 please?
If it is like the Prog 4, they are individual bridge/saddles each held with two screws. So could be plugged and moved if needed. I changed mine for a single P type, but alignment was tricky, needs to be within a fraction of a millimetre accuracy. Probably a luthier job to move the originals
 9. Maple JB (not on deko page) http://www.thomann.d..._serie_deko.htm (lucky, I don't like maple or blocks)
 10. I also found the sound card in my PC was rubbish. A 2i4 (other interfaces are available) works great. It comes with software (download), but Audacity is good for a quick check. You need to add Lame to save as MP3 from Audacity. My headphones (mid price 'hi-fi') sounded rubbish on the low end when plugged into one of my bass combos, but were 'OK' on the 2i4 headphone out.
 11.
So the stripping has begun! .... Has taken about 2 and a half hours so far.
Thanks for the photos, Interesting to know it is not so difficult. Almost stripped my Shorty P, then realised on getting the Prog, the only thing 'wrong' about its looks was the white pickguard. never liked black guitars. (or chrome knobs)
 12.
Yes, I expect there are one or two "domestic arguments" as a result of this thread however...
Just done a Skoda and f̶i̶l̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶a̶n̶k̶ ordered a set of TI flats for my Prog 4 (hides bank statement).
 13.
I spent almost as long adjusting the intonation (awkward little grub screw) on each saddle as converting the Bass.
My patience gave on my Prog 4 Deko, I fitted a gotoh clone from northwestguitars. Not quite the same finish quality as the gotoh, but a better colour match. Now I need flatwounds, which will cost more than the bass :-( But it is a very playable bass, the neck and body dimensions suits me, so will be worth it.
 14.
I didn't see a maple one last night, just rosewood one. So you might be lucky.
Maple is 'on request' That's how I got my progressive, confirmed next day.
 15.
https://m.thomann.de...arch=1439312033 Jazz bass popped up on mobile site, I got one of these and it was good apart from a dead spot on the neck
Still there on main site, rosewood or maple. Also bass uke. Progressives bass gone after almost 2 weeks.
 16.
... or perhaps they've covered 'Jail-house Rock'..?
Pink Floyd are doing that, with Charlie on cowbell. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33772293
 17.
The 73 tour was billed as probably their last, 2 shows at B'ham Odeon on the same night.
Not sure which of these two shows I went to, but found it rather perfunctory. Thanks for the photo. Keith is entitled to his opinion - if that is what it is, I heard he has a solo ablum out, so a safer way of getting attention than a coconut tree. SP was the most significant album of the decade, but then that is only my opinion.
 18. My 4 string Progressive Deko has arrived after 4 working days. Still trying to figure out why it is a deko. Slight scuff on the edge below the controls, small dent under the paint at one of the neck bolts. Pups and active controls not very exciting but I'll wait for a string change first. Relief a bit too much, but no surprise after correct string tension. Was expecting some fret buzz, but it plays very well., frets are well finished. Nut depth is fine. Can't believe the neck is not butter. The finish on the neck is even thinner that HBs usual thin. Rosewood fretboard is quite thick. I wonder what wood they use for this? seems to have been stained although to a better finish than the shorty.
 19. Uhh, you can still buy recorded music? I thought home taping killed off the industry in the 80s. I'll have to check these things you call CD and MP3
 20. Looks like Maart Allcock had something similar built around that time. http://www.maartinallcock.com/ (Click the GEAR tab) (there is a man who deserves to have that many instruments)

 23.
Wishbone Ash and Wild Turkey are reforming to do a new version of the Jaco classic "The Chicken"
Meanwhile....
