John's a diamond, and his work is just superb. I adore his preamps.

I really liked most of them, two really stood out and I enjoyed them equally, I voted for the one that edged the other in terms of compositional creativity. But I was genuinely torn between the two. Great stuff!
I wouldn't say I am frustrated as a bass player (or indeed as a guitarist or a singer). Then again, the idea of being able to 'express yourself' sounds like tree-hugging hippy twaddle to me. I play music because, to quote Eddie Cochran, 'When it all comes true man, wow, that's something else!' - by which I mean, hearing the band playing great and realising you're a part of it, and (sometimes) seeing/hearing the audience acknowledging that fact by cheering, dancing etc.
Really? Could you STOP being a musician? And haven't you completely contradicted yourself with your Eddie Cochran quote?

A group of the world's top guitar makers have banded together and traveled to the largest temperate coastal rain forest in the world, to slow down logging and save the acoustic guitar. Not everyone is a musician, and let's face it, unless we are content and believe we will never be able to fully express ourselves on our instruments, we are frustrated as musicians. We can't float the boat quickly enough, or at all. Not every note satisfies. We wish the beautiful mistake was deliberate, or the deliberate was a beautiful mistake, depending on your personal aesthetic, approach to learning, and confidence. We mistake passion for ability, ability for passion, wondering if people will dance to our new grooves, needing affirmation of some sort. You are probably a frustrated musician, but what is it that stops you accepting that the way you approach life and music is what you are? And stops you accepting and hearing your unique voice for what it is? Preventing you from developing your own truth as a musician and as a musical person. What makes you doubt your capacity to delight yourself, and touch other people?

Would be awful in wood finish, but white's not bad. I've seen a lot worse too. The Rick 4001 is a beautiful shape, but usually horrible to play.

Do we appreciate technical skill more than musical beauty on here?
Is it safe to have this discussion? Is Inti/Antelope anywhere withing hearing distance...? Simple is good. But often it seems that we have to go through some kind of "life cycle" as a musician. You start off crap (obviously), but through practise and dedication start to get quite good. Some people stop there and are quite happy. Others aspire to more, so they practise harder and longer. Maybe learn theory. Maybe have lessons. They start to get seriously good, and start to demonstrate their expertise by playing all over the music that they play.... Some people are impressed... Then comes the "economy" stage. You know where the notes are, and how to play them. You may well have a commanding knowledge of technique and are skilled in various styles.... BUT (and that's a big but) you choose not to play them all the time! You are now a tasteful player and are a far more valuable commodity to bands and other musicians. For that reason, never judge a player by what they play. You have no idea what they can play!
Superb post mate. -
I've often thought there is more appreciation of technical skills than musical beauty from the majority of players on here. I know we are obviously striving to improve our skills so we listen to great players, but are we forgetting what music is all about? It also seems to me a lot of skillful players feel the need to use those skills hence the technical displays of chops and a leaning towards jazz or techie music, or, god forbid, rapid slap. There is a lot of denigration of simpler music too, as if it's naive, commercial pap, or an excuse for poor musicianship, when often the reverse is true. Is the point of music often missed in light of this? If I'm right, that is.
Oh God - I'm an idiot. Where's the delete thread button?
Not at all You wouldn't believe how many people posted drummer at the wrong gig thinking they were the first
I shall be at the Borderline gig tomorrow if anyone fancies meeting up?
Mate, how was the show? Gutted I couldn't make it

I remember when TC used to be revered as superb very high quality equipment. Now we have splitting buttons, recalls .. What happened to them?
My contribution is "Topplue, Votter & Skjerf" (hat, coat and scarf) by the ECM jazz trio of Terje Rypdal (guitars), Miroslav Vitous (double bass) and Jack de Johnette (drums). Shut your eyes and you will be on a boat floating across a misty Norwegian fjord. Honestly! The double bass solo at 1:29 is just sheer beauty to me
Lovely that!

Time for a little ‘variation’...(maybe Spector?!)
It's farcical really. A testing subdomain e,g, staging.basschat.co.uk is the way to go.
Mate, you can't keep thinking of Basschat as a professional business. It's a cottage industry that's grown. The guys are doing their level best to provide the bast Basschat possible, and they are cognisant of the options for testing the site. They have a life too.

Submission No1 Zappa's Zoot Allures, the massively neglected Scott Thunes on bass. He deserves study, a real romantic bassist, his note choices are beautiful, his phrasing, his timing ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUhRBq8UiL0
I just picked this up from BC'er Orbs (aka Tom). These are Tom's pics which are TBH better than I could do, hence I hope he doesn't mind me using them
Clarky, that's gorgeous!
