1. Gents, I know what you're saying, believe me I do. I am capricious, and I fancy another Fender Jazz.
I have a suggestion Nige. I have reallly nice sonic blue CIJ 62RI Jazz (check the third from last page in the Jazz bass thread in Gear Porn for pics). You are welcome to borrow this for a few weeks and see if a Jazz is really what you want. You could A/B against your Streamer and make an informed decision about what you prefer. Let me know mate Would be a crying shame if you sold your Streamer for a song to get a Jazz and later regretted. You can always find a replacement Jazz but its almost impossible to replace your chrome Streamer (unless you want to shell out £2k for new ...)
Clarky, that is an immensely kind offer mate, thanks for your voicemail about it, I was shopping at the time and just got back. Really greatly appreciated mate! The Japanese RIs are fantastic, I had a CAR one if you remember, lovely lovely bass, I've had a few Jazzes. The thing is, I can't seem to form relationships with instruments, it's an endless and enjoyable search and I am subject to flights of fancy, I enjoy the buying and selling process, and at the moment I really fancy a Jazz again. I know I like them, and I love Warwicks too. I still have my homemade Chris Squire Electra copy with a German Warwick neck and that is a lovely bass. I need to get another East pre for it and get the neck fitted properly at the Gallery. I don't tend to regret selling instruments. I've had two years with the Chrome Tone and it's been a privilege, it's a wonderful instrument that looks fantastic. I just want a nice curvy Fender neck to play on Thanks again all, I deeply appreciate your concern for my mental health
 2.
Hi Nige, still not come to your senses yet then? You HAD the nicest Japanese Jazz that money could buy, and didn't get on with it! If I were you I'd keep this and buy Ryan Cowell's Bass Collection II for half the price.
Nope, I have a particular Jazz in mind I want a Fender Jazz I'm a nightmare aren't I Pete
 3. Thanks Steve It's daft really, had I the wedge, I would be keeping it, but I feel like a really nice Fender again. I'm fickle, but it's fun Cheers mate.
 4. BC price is £750 plus shipping, or you can pick it up or I can drop it to you if you are close to London. I need a quick sale now as there's a Jazz on here I'm after. I won't be lowering the price any more.
 5.
These make me smile, £785 is a wicked price - Has anyone seen the Judas Priest Solar Angel Artwork?? If you wore that outfit, whilst playing this, you'd be famous overnight...Damn my poor metalworking skills EDIT: Could be the Angel of Retribution...the one where he's fighting the Metal Hawk anyways...
Thanks mate, had a great offer on the bay but I could only go for it if we went ouside and avoid the fees. The guy never got back to me sadly. My plan is to get a nice Japanese Fender Jazz (geek99's lovely ash 75 reissue has me very tempted, but so does a fabulous 83 Jazz on here), and take my home made Chris Squire Electra copy to be sorted at the gallery. I got a new German Warwick neck for it but the neck socket needs levelling, it's slightly out and I can't get a good action. Cheers
 6. £785 is the BC price.
 7. I kept a bass for someone on here for about six weeks with no deposit. They convinced me they really wanted it, and I asked him to let me know if he changed his mind and I'd put it back up. He still loves that bass. I would not do that for an ebayer, and I wouldn't take a crap offer because cash was available.
 8. It's been doing the rounds for a couple of years I think. There are links in old threads to the actual Craigslist post. It's quite funny.
 9.
Thinking of the various bands in which I played when a beardless youth, we played covers, or covers / originals or only originals. But we didn't think 'Oh, we're a covers band' or whatever. We just thought 'We're a band'. And I don't ever recall anyone saying 'Let's go and see X down the pub' and someone else saying 'Let's not - they're a covers band'. I really don't recall when the distinction became so important or so imbued with 'meaning'. I must have been out of the country at the time.
It's a good point Skank, There are ClownWhore Entertainers and WhoreClown Entertainers, I think that must be the difference
 10.
Just out of curiosity Nige, what made you start wearing them? (sorry If you've been asked many times before, but it's 3am, I'm at work, and far too lazy to search old threads at the moment!!)
Because they look so damn cool
 11.
Has anyone mentioned Lee Sklar? Chops and a CV to die for. Good early call on Tony Levin too, great technique on upright, Stick or electric bass and another CV that goes on forever.
Chops and CV are all very well, but it's FIRE that keeps us warm Good call on Leland Sklar
 12.
Or for a more traditional take on the headless bass, how about a Spirit bass. The neck has a 1.5" nut but is quite deep, so it feels more comfortable in the hand. My 8 year old finds this a lot easier to play (badly at the moment) than my Jazz bass. It just seems more manageable, and definitely no neck dive. Spirit from the past. by dave_bass5, on Flickr
Go for the Hohner Jack though, they are much higher quality components and build, and sound. They're not expensive s/h either.
 13.
One of these?
It's what I'd thought of too but the nut is further away necessitating a bit of stretch. EDIT: It could work! It has the extender that gets the strap button in the right place. Way to go. They look so damn cool too.
 14.
I'd be looking to go custom, it'll be worth the money and think of the joy you'd get from having a bass that fits you
And get it wrong and you're f***ed.
 15.
Same as above. The music shops around here are crap for basses, so it's really difficult to go try them out.
Get on a bus to London.
 16.
Because to me, it's all music. And I don't really distinguish between the two to any degree.
Cool
 17.
Why didn't you say that then?
"I just did"
 18.
We do. We have a full set of originals, and we do original-only gigs. But the songs are so good, we play some in the covers set too, and the punters appreciate it. This, in turn, it drums up interest in the original gigs. Like I say, simple.
Why didn't you say that then?
 19.
Why?
More money potential, probably more personal fulfilment potential (but I'm wondering about that now after this thread ) and honing compositional skills. It would be a very marvellous experiment.
 20.
Nige, we never 'chuck a few originals into the set' (but neither would I think of us as a 'covers band' or, even less so, as an 'originals band') but some of our songs were written by band members while other songs were written by other people, sometimes rather obscure other people. When we perform songs written by others they are rearranged and may have quite different instrumentation from other performances of those songs. Whatever we play, we sound like us playing it. Audiences usually like us and thay don't discriminate songs by songwriters. Which part is hard to understand?
Basically because it seems like a confused band, but what do I know? That's why I asked
 21.
Just to focus on this comment... It's simple, really. One of my bands, which is less established than the others, has a personality split between covers and originals. The covers get us the gigs, and the originals are so good (IMO) they fit right in amongst pretty distinguished company. Punters now know the tunes, and shout out for them.
Sounds like you should work towards being originals then mate.
 22.
If you are miming, you may be entertaining, but you are not entertaining by being a musician - you are doing it by being an actor - pretending to do something you are not actually doing. Your musical skills are largely irrelevant, and it is entirely possible that a non-musician, or someone with only rudimentary musical skills, could do the job better than you. Especially if they have bigger [s]t*ts[/s] stage presence. For me, the interesting question in the covers v. originals debate is why there is this sharp divide in the world of rock/pop while it seems to be more or less irrelevant in other genres. Go to a jazz or folk gig, for example, and whether it's a top performer or a band in your local pub/club, you are very likely to see them perform a mix of originals and tunes written by others.
Which of course raises the question 'what's wrong with being an actor?'. One acts in one's music videos, so what is the problem with 'acting' music on stage? The second of your paragraphs is interesting, I think it's because rock and pop music in general terms is disposable singalong music for a lot of people. It's undervalued, not ART, because it's often viewed as needing little skill and is not ART, even by some buggers on here Jazz, classical .. schooling, skill, culturally important, heritage, there to be taken and interpreted, preserved, treasured etc.
 23.
I wasn't, whats his problem? Also does anyone ever get that problem when they've just came in from outside and your fingers keep sticking on strings completely killing the fluency of playing? I find the gloves overcome it, and they're only the cheap cotton ones from the corner shop.
Focal Dystonia. You can read about it on his site.
 24. Really good mate, thanks!
