Interesting! I nearly got to audition as a guitarist for Phil Lynott, but he died very shortly after the invitation. Sadly, I live in London now, and I'm mostly a bassist these days. Very best of luck in your search.

Think I'll create a superbly crafted bass that can cut through any mix and sounds bigger than Beyoncé's leg. I'll brand it 'GOOD THATCHER' and see how long the anti label whores dare to be seen with it
Everything you say is true, and I really like your attitude to this. And yet... I do rather like having the Fender logo on my bass. However I'm really not bothered that it was made in Mexico. There's no logic to it at all really. The psychology of brand loyalty seems to be rather complex.
It really is, and it's a beautiful thing. I wonder how many people would stop playing Fenders if it came to light that Leo was another Jimmy Savile, or stop playing Rickenbacker if they found out John Hall was a miserable lawsuit threatening f***er
Well, this fairly grinds my gears. It is what it is and it's either good or not good, and furthermore I'll be the judge of that, it's me that's playing the damn thing. The badge is irrelevant. I have Gibsons, I have an Epiphone. I have a USA G&L, I have G&L Tributes. I have Yamahas, no "golden age Japanese" ones, sorry, they're all made in Taiwan. Oh well, they must be crap then. So no, I'm not a badge whore and to think you can be judged musically before you've even played a note is such a logical incongruence it isn't even funny. Bassism. Funny how that rhymes with a more socially unacceptable form of discrimination. With that in mind, the "gear police" can naff off. I wouldn't want to play with people who listen with their eyes. To kow-tow to this attitude is to lend it credence. Stand up for your bass, and yourself!
We all agree that badge is only one element that can indicate quality. Gibson for example are known for poor quality and concentrating on the finish rather than the build. I read an interview with Alex Lifeson who said his PRSs are amazingly well built and fantastic straight out the box, whereas his Gibsons always need work to make them playable, but he prefers the sound of his Gibsons. I tried an expensive Alex Lifeson sig Gibson a month ago, it was awful to play. Our assumptions, knowledge levels and prejudices can lead to strange decisions. It what makes us all unique from each other. But I agree, if you have a great instrument that you love, defend it to the hilt regardless of the badge, but if that badge bothers you, then hunt for a great bass with the right badge that makes you feel nice. Colour can make a difference too, I don't care how good the bass is, if it's sunburst I won't enjoy it. I'll take a really good USA Fender over a really good Squier or MIJ/CIJ Fender any day. It makes me feel nice.
Yes, very much so here, can't be just the 'F' word, has to have 'USA' tag too. Not because I marvel at the US labour (or should that be labor) force, far from it, but I only buy a bass on a rare occasion and it needs to be one I can resell easily. Why buy a 'nearly' bass? I unfortunately judge other's guitars and basses on a similar level. A MiM is about as worthy as a Satellite. Ridiculous, but it's there in my sub-concious regardless of how 'free' I'd like to be. It's the likes of me that keeps MiM prices low and MIA prices high. Sorry everyone, I resent it too!
I know what you mean, but we have to separate the music from the tools, it's very important. I adore my 83 USA Jazz, it's a fabulous Jazz, but I have to admit the fact it has that lovely '80s Fender logo with Made in USA gives me a big jab of nostalgia, Made in Japan lacks a little romance for me.

I see nowt wrong with being a badge whore, but there are knowledgable badge whores and ignint badge whores. I would always respect the guy with the superb Squier over the twit with the sh*t USA Fender.

Nice tone, Chris! -
Beat me to it. Or Steel Pulse, that would be nice.
OOOH! Good call!! Me, it would have to be Linton Kwesi Johnson '80s / '90s, or maybe one of Adrian Sherwood's bands.
Then you could play 'dazed and confused' on the 'used and abused'.
Or unused and abused
I find that the most curious thing about some relic'd guitars and basses. A mate of mine had an early 60s Stratocaster in the 80s which had been a real workhorse and had numerous dings, buckle rash and chips out of it but it wasn't dirty, it wasn't rusty and the bridge wasn't full of gunge and grime. I've seen loads of groups since the 70s but can't remember many (if any) having filthy dirty guitars and basses covered in gloop and gunge. I fully understand the relic'd thing but just don't get the heavy relic, rusty, dirty idea at all.
Maybe they should be called 'junked' not reliced. Or maybe 'f***ed', 'heavily f***ed' etc

Mayflys are playing with us, I really like this, lovely tone from that FNA Corvette too .. http://www.youtube....h?v=XFnEHkvh53k
Stop being so smug lol....behave yourself.
If I had to pick another, and providing I'd had the educashum, it would have to be Zappa's bands, any line up from early '70s to '88 would do
Hi I am thinking about getting a Fender Precision. What is the most sought after years and are any years to avoid? What about 5 string PBs. Worth thinking about? Seen a 76 recently for £1500.....that a good price ?
Try LOADS of them. New and old. Try them in a shop first as obviously they'll have a selection and find what you like and don't like about certain models. They can be very different. Also, perhaps take someone with you who knows what to look for in terms of tone and build quality. The mid '60s L Series are revered by Fender aficionados, but you'll pay a pretty price for one of those. The new Fenders are excellent, so you good always buy a new one and make it yours. I have a 2011 Deluxe Strat and it's superb in every way, but then so it my 1983 Jazz.
A popular misconception, what fender Japan call USA pickups aren't the same as what you'd find in a USA fender, they are Japanese built and called USA, still weak sounding by comparison.
Ahh, thank you for that. That will teach me to make assumptions.
The tuners are smaller than these in the link but I would not say they are quite small? http://www.ebay.com/...=item20d0fce6f3
Then yours is like this (pic below) right? And therefore most probably an export bass with a basswood body rather than alder (not that I believe that makes a blind bit of difference) and will have Japanese Fender pups which some people think are inferior to the USA ones. My preference would be to go for a John East active preamp, they retrofit with no mods. Call or email John and you will find him to be remarkably helpful and an absolute gentleman. They are dead easy to fit and solderless apart from the ground, John will help you if you need. You will have wet dreams about your tone after you've installed it http://www.east-uk.com

Failing - A very difficult piece for solo string bass
xilddx replied to chrismuzz's topic in General Discussion
This is absolutely incredible and deeply inspiring. What a beautiful tone he gets, and his intonation is wonderful. What a truly fabulous musician. It's made me very happy Thanks for posting it! -
[sub]Hi, I have heard that they maybe USA and also that they are not. To be honest the wiring looks cheap to me so I was swayed to thinking that they weren't USA.[/sub]
Has your bass got the original tuners to the best of your knowledge? If so, look at the plates on the back of the tuners. If they are large plates it is almost certainly a non-export and will almost certainly have USA pickups. If the tuner plates are quite small then they will be Japanese pickups on an export bass. Whatever, if you don't like the way they sound then that's that.
