I need to get this right! Pre amp pedal into an amp...
Musicman20 replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Cheers ill try tomorrow -
Hi all I want to try my Tonehammer pedal through the Shuttlemax 9.2 or Streamliner 900 (GB). How do I go about it properly? Do I need to power the pedal itself then plug it into the effects out power amp in or am I wrong?
The original designs did have their flaws, but Fender have improved upon many of them by now anyway. You can't really say that one instrument is "objectively" better than another. Music is a very subjective thing. That's why some people lug around great big heavy fridges and valve amps despite their being louder, smaller, lighter and more efficient rigs available for less money. On paper they win hands down; in practice? It depends on what the individual wants to hear when he plays. Fender get a lot of schtick, usually by people comparing them to instruments twice their price. There aren't many companies who offer an American made instrument with top quality hardware and electronics in a top-quality hardcase for the money that Fender do (indeed many of these companies Fender are often compared to charge what Fender do for an American instrument in a hard case for an Asian one chucked in a rubbish gig bag). My go-to bass is a Warwick Corvette. Very modern; 24 frets, extremely open-sounding pick-ups, active EQ, fancy woods etc. But for playing anything a bit more classic, it just can't compare to my Fender. You can't really improve on that sound for playing that kind of music because that's the sound that was on that music; it's that simple. Around the Fender price point I really don't think there's any much out there that can do that as well as a Fender can. And sometimes there are times where you just need something a bit more modern. I think spending a fortune to get a boutique builder to build you a hybrid modern take on a classic design wouldn't cut it for me. You'd probably end up with an instrument that can manage a good approximation of a modern sound or a classic sound, but nail neither. Personally I'd rather spend half the budget on a Fender, and half on something a bit more modern. But each to his own.
Pretty much my thoughts. The only issue is the whole 'Fender 5 string' issue, but I've yet to play the latest Jazz 5'ers, and they might be pretty good. I agree, especially on basses like Lakland. I've seen some recent examples and they have cut corners quite a lot. A new one had really rough unsanded/untreated wood on the headstock edges. The pickup routing was pretty bad. Then you don't even get a bag, never mind a case. A high end manufacturer charging £1500+ needs to supply a quality bespoke case. End of.
Do Bongos use different pups?
Yep! Neodymium magnets. I'm sure they are wound pretty hot as well. It definitely makes a difference. Very very CLEAR and almost hi-fi with the grunt of a Musicman. Extremely sensitive pickups...so the lightest touch makes a big sound!

Nope haha! But I'm glad others are. To be fair, I'm at work a lot, and I knew I would be in this career, so I don't mind. I'll find something decent eventually.

Need more power - what to do for the best?
Musicman20 replied to jimcroisdale's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry not sure....I just cut the bass control to 10 o'clock ish and it seems to do the trick. It's still quite 'full' sounding, much bigger than the Shuttle's without the bass filter. It's a beautiful sounding amp IMO. -
I'd rather have a Stingray. Funnily enough, I've seen and heard samples of the Sadowsky custom version of a Stingray 5, and it just doesn't have the balls of a Musicman.

Hi all Just a quick post to show my appreciation for the service from Promenade Music. I’ve used them in the past as well, and this time they really did go over and above the normal customer service. I don’t think these guys get much of a mention on Basschat, but I will definitely be going back to them. Keen prices, friendly advice, quick service. Musicman20 replied to jimcroisdale's topic in Amps and Cabs
All the Genz amps have hi pass filtering to prevent really low sub bass rumbles...so the bass is usually present but tight, (although sounds bigger with the Streamliners). Pete - The EQ is bandaxall...very smooth and musical. You can crank the mid/treble right up and it still sounds great. -
A Fender P5 will do the job and not break the bank. if you like the idea of quite warm/woody P bass tones, a Stingray 5 HS will give you this, plus a LOT more. I can get my S pickup to sound very warm, woody, and almost upright-like!

I agree. This could be down to the basses I've personally tried, but I think the 2008-2011's (especially on the P side) were better. I am wondering exactly what that custom shop pickup is in the P bass. To me, it sounded quite 'muddy' but this could have been a number of factors, including the amp. I've noticed the neck finish isn't quite as slick and impressive, and the maple boarded versions don't seem to have as thick a gloss on the board from 2012 onwards. Cases/hardware/weight are damn good, but the strings have also taken a turn for the worse. I think Fender changed their string manufacturer in 2011/12 and it was immediately noticable to me. Previously, these AS had the whole package for about £900.00, which was a good deal. We are only talking 2 years ago. Now, I'd think twice. I've had a few 08s-11s and some of them were very good, (the first two) some weren't so hot, etc etc. However, along the way I obtained my current '09 P bass and '11 Jazz, and to me, they are the best looking/feeling/sounding Fender basses that I have owned.

I'm interested in buying one, and I also want a Polytune 2.0 (TC Electronic). So, does that help?

I understand that many of us like to support UK based businesses. I suppose Im the same with OBBM's cables, (plus they are just great cables). However, I personally would think payment a day or two before delivery is a better option. Deposit? No issue. Full payment? Only if its going to be with me very very soon, and I have a delivery date with a few days. As much as there is a sense of 'I'm supporting a business in the UK', that doesn't really matter to me now. I buy from a business because I want a product, and good service is key.

Barefaced Midget, Aguilar DB112, Berg HD/CN112....
Musicman20 replied to aj5string's topic in Amps and Cabs
Surely if the Midget is snarly and 'bitey', this would suggest it DOES have a 'voice' and colour...eg a mid bump? Not that I mind that at all. -
The cabs are well overpriced when you compare them to the SVT210AV, which is half the price of the 112!
Agreed. Very expensive for an Ampeg cab.

Musicman20 replied to jimcroisdale's topic in Amps and Cabs
On the Streamliner, you have a lot of bass and a lot of headroom IMO. Drop the bass, boost mids, make sure you are setting the gain/volume/master to their full extent, (don't crank the master but get enough juice from the gain etc). -
Even the best luthiers have their off-days...
In the interest of balance and using the same principals, have we ever known Molan to exaggerate or with malice aforethought misrepresent facts on here. I certainly haven't... then again I'm not as rabid a basschatter as I used to be. He seems quite adamant over his position and claims to have unpublished info. Of course I would love to know all the juicey behind the scene bits but I find it hypocritical that we are calling for all the beef from both sides while simultaneously calling into question JC's (and to some extent Molan's) professional ethics. Who here would like their luthier to discuss in detail their private interactions? Having read JC's outburst, I'm sure he would love the details of his side of the story eloquently set out on his behalf... but would it be right to do so? Time will tell I suppose. In response to those fed up with the thread, unsubscribe. I personally enjoy daily serialisations like this - when they are kept civil, as has been. I find them pertinent to our interests and the longer they are left to mature (often a rarety on here) they go to prove how different and interesting and fallible we all are.... even world renowned luthiers. Often we come away wiser than before and as usual it's never the end of the world.
Excellent post. -
