1.
By "horrible cut out" do you mean the bottom cutaway being deeper than the top one?? The JC has that.
That's the one. For some reason I don't mind it on the JC. I think because it wasn't there before on the Midtown, I prefer it without!
2. I have however been offered a gold Epiphone JC or Gibson Midtown in sunburst (2013 without the horrible cut out!) at very reasonable prices....hmm!
3. I realise I should have jumped on the MIK Pro Star Bass when they were on sale!
4. Hi all I've been on the hunt for a semi acoustic style bass for a while now. I really like the large Gibson/Gretsch style bodies, and these two basses nail the classic style I'm after. I unfortunately have zero experience with any of them. I am trying to avoid buying without trying, but there seems little chance of that now, more so with the Midtown. Can anyone comment on these basses? More so the Midtown, as I love their sunburst model! Will they nail a very classic smooth/warm/thumpy tone? I realise part of that is technique and strings.
5. One thing I think makes the 2013 onwards Gibson basses so appealing is the fact they are actually very reasonably priced for a USA made, nitro finished bass with a quality hardcase.
6. The Thunderbirds in Walnut look fantastic! Nice SG by the way.
7. The prices (I think) are around £80-£100...
8. Just had one of these delivered very recently. I've not even had chance to plug it in etc, but the quality of the pedal seems excellent for the price! It makes me wonder why boutique pedal's cost so much! Eg. The Tech 21 BDDI!
9. I've just got a B3 at a decent price, and despite this being a new pedal, I'm glad I went with the B3 for the casing/screens/DI etc.
10. I love white basses and guitars but that isn't as appealing as I first hoped. I want Sunburst!
11. I like the fact he plays with a pick a lot, then obviously can pull out the other techniques. Unique pick style...sounds great.
12. Genz Benz design input me thinks....
13.
But he wants two cabs as far as I can work out. Is there a CN112? Then you have the same suggestion but offering the two cab solution he requires
Ay there is a CN112.
14. I would sell and buy a Bergantino CN212. Super light, great form factor, great for mids, tweeter.
15. Looks like a Roadworn neck on a normal body to me...something is odd!
16. Definitely a TC RH450/Streamliner combination. The Genz amps are no longer in production. The Genz staff are now (apparently) working with Fender on the Fender amps, (new Rumble series it appears). The Genz prices now are crazy. Grab whilst you can!
17. I wouldn't combine the NV115 with a CN or HD cab. Totally different flavours! The NV is sealed. Tight low end, lots of sub bass roll off. More like the tone of the classic 8x10 sealed cabs, but smaller. The CN cabs are again punchy, but will have a bigger sounding low end, and a bump in the mids that really allows the bass to be heard. The HD cabs are more classically voiced. Eg, probably the fullest lows, smoother mids. If you are going down the Berg route I'd recommend the CN212 or 2 x CN112s.
18. Ric 4003. Still want one, just can't deal with the potential 'issues' and they don't feel right in my hands. One day, I WILL own one. Stingray? The Ray was (and still is I guess) my DREAM bass from being 12/13. I evenutally got one and it surpassed all my expectations
19. Yes and no haha! I love the chase of trying new gear. I find bass guitars absolutely fascinating. However, I always look at EBMM as my benchmark. Nothing touches them for quality/price/ergonomics/tone for my tastes. Fender are a close second, but I wish they would continue to build on their QC. I have two stunning Fenders but I have played many terrible Fenders!
20. I think TC should integrate the Toneprint into the RH amps...now that would be fantastic.
21.
Just be aware a big factor in the original Gibson EB-2's thuddy tone was the short scale. The mudbucker at the neck will give you a bassy, wooly sound but the thud is very much a product of the scale length. The new EB-2 / 335 Gibson bass is a long (34") scale so won't sound quite the same as the originals do. The Starbass is also long scale and it's pickups are too bright and too far forward for that EB thump. So far as cellulose finishes go, Gibson have been doing it for more than half a century so they're pretty good at it Cellulose is a harder finish than most water based finishes you see on cars and it looks nicer when it eventually does start to wear out. Don't worry about it.
Cheers. Yeah I am probably over thinking it. I've just never had a nitro finished instrument. I don't mind the kinda cool honest wear and tear...and I hear that the sunburst finishes look really nice over time. I should probably take the plunge and just be careful. We don't have major extreme weather over here so its not like I'll be taking it from a freezing 2 hour car journey into a red hot gig very often....if at all! I've been looking into the scale issue. I'd personally prefer to keep it 34", despite the sound differences. I'm just far too used to a normal bass guitar scale now. I'm definitely going to give the Gibson some thought...
22.
Has anyone emailed Markbass yet to ask?
I don't think so. Last time I emailed them a few years back I never got a response. I'm surprised it isn't on Talkbass yet...
23.
Aren't alot of modern Gibsons a nitrocellulose finish on a polyester main coat also?
Apparently not....nitro base and nitro top coat...if that's technically the right way to say it.
24.
Check out the Warwick Pro Star Bass. I tried the Midtown but preferred the Warwick. It's lovely :-)
I was going to get one of the sale ones off Thomann but they sold out
25. I've always been a fan of the large semi-hollow basses and guitars, such as the Gibson E335 shape/etc, and I've recently been craving a very thuddy 'upright-meets-bass-guitar' type tone from a bass with a fat neck pickup strung with flats. I've been looking at new Gibson basses, and they mainly seem to be finished in nitro. Being how I am, this might not be a wise move! Some players love the checking/wear, and whilst honest wear is fine with me, I'm not sure I could be doing with having to put dusters on stands/not opening the case after its been outside for a while. I do not think checking looks good! Just how fragile is it??! Thanks
