Lakland 5 String - Darryl Jones v.s. Joe Osborn
Musicman20 replied to bigevilman's topic in Bass Guitars
Cheers for the feedback guys Just lost out bidding on JO5 on evilbay about a hour ago....oh how it mocks me! Gonna keep looking though Out of curiosity....are all the DJ's passive? I've noticed that some JO's are active, but to be honest, I've only ever had a go on a couple of cheap active basses, so I wouldn't be too sure whether active would the route to go or not any advice?
They are all passive from stock...but they are both very popular (esp the DJ) for adding an onboard pre-amp. -
Indeed that would have been handy. Yeh I know they have a svt cl and I think they have a 200b so ill play them both if I can. What would you say are the differences between the orange and the peg? Andy
This is all IMO, but Orange beat it hands down for the following reasons: Better customer service, based in UK, 3 years warranty with PMT, (think its 1 or 2 normally anyway). Orange looks cooler. Plug in and awesome tone instantly....no messing about. Brilliant classic Orange tone. Great for fat clean warm tube tone, or really really gritty dirty tube tone, and all in between. Lighter amp Better grit at lower volumes IMO, better grit overall, (purely amazing tube grind when you have the gain up to about 3/4). Still incredibly, incredibly loud. Very simple design, with no bells and whistles, short signal path = tone heaven. Orange are more boutique in my eyes....not so everyday. Let me know how you get on.

Looking for a brand new band or two in Newcastle.
Will it fit a 2007 Vauxhall Vectra, do you know??
I think its basically a standard size unit...fits in all the 'radio' slots in the cars its been in. It was in a Corsa, Polo, then a Ford KA. I know the power cable I bought with it should just connect to any normal power supply in a car... Let me know what you think. It comes with the metal shell that goes into the car surround.

Isnt it just a rubbish looking precision?!
-
Thinner pick, faster pace! I have done this before and you can get upto some very fast speeds. Awesome fun and once you pair it with a fast fretting hand it looks impressive. Thicker pick, more meaty tone but difficult to go incredibly fast.
-
Beware volume ratings. It might not be as 'loud' as you think. One manufacturers 500W is not as loud as another's 300W! Genz, unfortunately, never seem to be as loud as they state. Cf this to MB, or more recently, the TC Elec RH450. Sometimes its right to get a good 4 ohm cabinet....some 8 ohm cabinets will get you through depending on size. Ive mainly used 8 ohm cabs on their own with a loud punk band, and had no volume issues.
Pooles music in Grimsby are fairly good too, although limited in stock. Went to try out a squier classic vibe jazz, but it was expensive compared to soundslive etc.
+1 to Pooles in Grimsby, I forgot about them. They will match prices and I get my Orange stuff from them now. Pete is a brilliant chap and looks after my setups if I need something checking out. Great store for a small town.

I like the idea of that tiny light combo, but the price will put me off. I hope the retail price is decent. I really dont understand the large cabs, plus Ive not seen anyone using them yet, but I would be interested to hear!
Bass Merchant is the only dedicated store I have used and can't fault it at all. Darren is a pleasure to deal with and makes you feel welcome like an old friend.
Best: Bass Merchant. Yep, I totally agree. Darren (and Chris) treats all his customers like old friends and always has nice new bass toys to play with. He also has fantastic prices. I spent ages trying to find a store that dealt with the brands I like all under one roof, and I found it. EDIT - Pooles in Grimsby are also good. For a small town, they can get hold of some nice gear if you ask, and will pricematch. I use them for my Orange gear now, and any setups/checkovers. Pretty good: Soundslive and GuitarGuitar are really nice chaps. Always reply fast to emails. Worst: Personally, it has to be PMT in Leeds. I put a post up about 8-10 months ago about the terrible service they gave me on a new 08/09 American Series Jazz. They tried to pass it off as new, it was scratched. They then said it was the best they could do for the price match, (even though ALL stores online had them at £829...the same price, and Id just spent a lot of money on mr Orange OBC410 and AD200b Mk3 with them!). The same chap then lied to my face, and said it would be a new bass when I next went in. Two weeks pass, I remembered the serial number roughly, and yep, 'here is your new bass' turned into me opening the case to notice it was the same one but poorly polished. I complained to Fender UK and they were furious. Its a shame, PMT stock a lot of great gear....but I blame that store/assistant.
What was he thinking too? He almost always plays Fender or fender-shaped basses. I'm afraid that is fugly IMHO. A bit like the sort of thing Def Leppard would have played in the big hair days
+1....thats just a mess of a bass. Its like he's trying far too hard. I certainly think Lakland should have picked him up instead.
trying to emulate Entwistle? whatever he plays, the plodding 16th note patterns on the 3 chords he knows will sound the same. Runs for cover......
Hahaha, it had to be said.
Darren at Bass Merchant has 'em, and uses them in his own rig.
Yep....and after I tested them, I have to agree. I wasnt sure, after owning Berg gear. Berg gear is top of its game and top prices if you buy new. But bloomin heck, the RS cabs are very very nice. I dont know how they have done it, especially at fairly low-ish prices, but they do a very good job. Plus, if you want to take one, you can! Berg HS410 is very nice...just sold mine on due to having too much cab-wise, but it was very nice indeed. Compact and sounded massive. Go 2nd hand though.
Hope you've got a decent-sized spare room to fit all that gear into!!
LOL....yep...that was the requirement...and a good lift/security. We arent having a spare room....its a music room Might leave some with the rents but not sure what yet....see how it goes.

Anyone A/Bed the RS210 x 2 against RS210 + RS212? Decisions!
Guys.... An IP112 stack is top of my amp shopping list just now I've got to hear one along side a TC450 RS210/RS212
Don't let the fact the RS cabs are cheaper put you off. A test will definitely help. I never thought about them until I heard the 210/212 together and it sounds fantastic! Brilliant with a Lakland JO5, stunning B. I'm now gassing for them due to the form factor!
Top stuff! Best of luck in the Toon. I moved up here from Yorkshire for university, and I couldn't imagine moving away again now (well, I mean, I've gone all genteel and moved out into Tynedale, but it still counts ). Give it a couple of years and you might have figured out enough Geordie to hold a conversation... Can't offer any direct help with finding a band, I'm afraid, but there's a cracking scene of heavy/punky/screamy stuff in Newcastle. A lot of energy and ambition. You should find something pretty easily.
Thanks!!! Hopefully I will settle quickly. Sorted a nice apartment in the centre with my girlfriend yesterday. Now I need a band asap!

I sold my HS410 due to space and needing a small rig for living in Newcastle. The weight didn't bother me...and the tone was great. Not sure what Berg would suit me for future gigs. I do like how well made they are, but the prices to buy new are very high.
That say's to me I'd have to buy a bass and an amplifier to be able to be eligible. Probs just go for an interest payable one, GAK will have them avaliable the end of the month. Shame really because city music in Brum have offered me an AD200B for £1100 outright :/
That's roughly what I paid new for mine. It wasn't in the store longer than a week so it was immaculate. 3 yr guarantee as well. Beat the Ampeg hands down.
front end gain from an orange? how much further can they get from the original matamps! They made be made in the uk but that doesn't make them any better than something made in china. It's still on a pcb and the valves are still pcb mounted to and all the wiring is done with spade connectors and borderline components are used. get a matamp, same price MUCH better quality.
I very much doubt anyone can tell any difference between ptp and pcb. It doesn't bother me. The amp looks fantastic, isn't too heavy, has lovely fat creamy tone, and a fantastic gain control. I will be purchasing a Matamp in 2010 if all goes well, but when I gigged a friends it didn't speak to me instantly like the Orange. Not dissin them though, could have been the tubes. The whole issue of where it was manufactured matters very little in this day and age. My TC is made in Malasia I think, and it's fantastic. It's brilliant to have the manufacturer in the UK for cost and warranty issues. Orange have always been 100% helpful with me with every email or call I made.
