1. Thats me out. Backstabbing set of t**ts. Not nice at all, ive spent loads of money rehearsing. Guess they wont be ready for their next two gigs again then. I will make sure they know I know....and make sure I leave them in the sh**. To conclude, I didnt even get chance to ask them about this. All I did was explain I had 3 sets of family visiting over the next few weeks so I could only do one session a week. I am also very busy job hunting! Bit shocked at their appalling lack of honesty. That makes me look like an idiot.
2.
You must have had 'the chat', then... I see they're advertising for a new guy?
?! Are they?
3.
I absolutely adore this band. Hunter is incredible, if you have not seen them live DO IT! it's a real adrenaline rush. I remember reading a few years back about Hunters Jazz bass which has a built in wireless kit and no input socket. Very cool!
Agreed. Massive adrenaline rush His Precision tone, IMO, makes them sound a little more aggressive. As much as I love the Jazz tone, the P tone helps them live with them having only one guitarist.
4.
I can't agree with the OP on this one. I suppose it all depends whether you enjoy 'rehearsing' or not. It beats playing on your own along with an iPod, any day. Even though the band might not be the closest of buddies, it is still great to let rip. It's what I joined a band for (playing with others) so I am happy to 'rehearse' anytime for as long as they want, especially as gigs are a bit thin on the ground at the moment. Of course it helps having a rehearsal space that does not have to be paid for, but the OP seemed to be of the opinion that because he has learned his stuff, everyone else should be as perfect as well and not 'waste' his time. Hmmm.. It's a hobby and it's a team game. A hobby that I would gladly do for nothing (even gigging) as we all have day-jobs. You don't see many golfers demanding payment from the golf club for playing on their course - so why should a pub pay us for having a ball? There are thousands of ski-ers out there with expensive kit and horrendous travel costs, but they do it because they get pleasure from it. If I was in a band but baulked at having to actually play together too often, then I would have to seriously question if I had chosen the correct hobby.
I enjoy playing at home with an ipod, I enjoy playing with people just to jam, and I REALLY enjoy playing live. Ive been playing in a DIY Hardcore Punk band for 2 years, and we never got any decent payment...EVER. It barely covered our petrol, and normally we lost out. I did it because I love playing. Playing live I really did let rip, believe me. Now Ive moved Ive left that band. It is a hobby, but it is also possibly to be semi professional and have it as a small income. Plenty of musicians do it. Why should a rock band be paid?! Covers bands are normally always paid, and if they are not, id think they need to start asking for it. I have another band up here thats my hobby. Its a strange mixture of complex punk mixed with something like Minus the Bear. Very odd. Good fun though. We will never earn. Thats my 'fun' band I do for the sheer hell of loving the whole creation/playing/recording with friends. If you fill a pub to see your covers/function band, you should be paid. Same with virtually all forms of entertainment. You cannot get in the cinema for free can you?! Just because I enjoy it it shouldnt be free. What you arent grasping is that with a covers/professional band/function band, SOMEONE is making money, and if its not the band, the bar/promoter is usually taking it! So why is that fair? Skiing is different. Its not entertainment as such for others, although it definitely can be at a certain level. Its not so easy to be entertainment for others when you ski; its just mainly for your fun. They may well want to see a band though; its more entertaining to a more general slice of the public. Dont get me wrong, I see where you are coming from, but I cannot have that approach to a band which is partly there to bring in an income.
I think the OP was saying that he was frustrated at exensive rehearsals in both time and money and was this the norm? I'd say the opinion here was that this wasn't normal to rehearse with full band kit, 2 nights a week for 4 months with a gig still a month away. I think it would have been better if the band decided on its line-up ..decided on a set and then get a gig to aim for....which for pubs and with that sort of rehearsal schedule should have taken about 6 weeks, IMV. I wouldn't be overjoyed either...
Agreed, its overkill at this stage. I could understand it at first, but its almost like they are over-doing it.
Horses for courses. I play as a hobby too, but not everyone on this forum is a musician purely for pleasure. Some are true professionals and most seem to balance the two - i.e. they play because they enjoy it, have a "day-job", but still expect to be treated with respect and earn some financial recompense. If, for example, I give up an evening with my family to travel to a venue, set up my gear, play my heart out for two hours and not get home till well after midnight - should I not expect the venue to pay me for my time and effort? If we have brought maybe fifty or more people (who would not otherwise have been there) into the venue to drink expensive beverages and contribute to the wealth of the venue owner/landlord/etc. OK, in some cases I would gig for free - but I would hate to think that all bands would be expected to!! Its been discussed at great length on other threads whether bands should expect to be paid to play - and its a complex question with many complex answers... Gareth has explained his situation in detail and why it is irritating him. I think (as do many others on here) that he has a fair point. You are free to disagree of course! But the way you phrase it - he is wrong. Now that I do disagree with!!
Completely agree. Its our time, and some gigs can be for free. I still think even small original bands with young musicians should STILL be paid, but thats for another topic haha. Someone is making money, and after being a promoter for a short period, I know exactly how much can be made charging £3 for 3 local bands! Cheers
5. Finally some threads on AFI!. As much as Im always a fan of early work with banks of this genre, AFIs latest work is really really good. Highly polished, very catchy, awesome melodies, great bass tone (big fat clanky Precision bass cf to his older Jazz tones). Sing The Sorrow is my favourite album. Yes, it is nowhere near as upbeat/fast/punk as their earlier work, but the songs are SO well constructed. I recently went to Groezrock in Belgium. AFI were one of the highlights. Not only do they really enjoy playing live, (its so obvious with how they throw themselves around) the light show, stage props, and awesome singalongs made it perfect for me. I had food poisoning the morning before they played, and I made the Festival about 3 hours later than planned (only missed 1 or 2 bands I planned to see luckily). AFI made it a really really good day, along with A Wilhelm Scream. Highly recommended to see live. Davey's vocals are spot on, and he's finally ditched the daft goth-punk look!
6. Id choose the Markbass over the Genz Shuttle, but thats just me. It 'sounds' much fuller and they rate the wattages a little more normally with Markbass so its seems louder despite being rated lower!
7.
Seems like third hand hearsay at the moment- I couldn't find any sign of it on the Warwick site.
Me neither...
8. I know the Corvettes are now made in Korea. Are we now talking about ALL the normal Warwicks?! Bad move Warwick.
9.
Hi, Looking for some advice on whats hot for £1000 these days? I have been looking at the New Fender American Deluxe series, looking pretty good to me, but obviously I need to go try it. Would like something thats traditional shape (Jazz/Musicman). I've currently got a Musicman Sterling USA (not the Sterling by Musicman Korean stuff) which I love but its time for an upgrade, another Sterling maybe but I'd like to know what else is out there for me to try. Any help/advice is much appreciated. Many thanks AJ
Hmm What tone are you after? Id personally say a Stingray, Precision or Jazz. There hasnt been a better time for quite some years to buy a new 08/10 American Series P or J....Fender have got it right. As long as you are careful and check them over in first day or so, you should get an awesome bass.
10. Tis a stunner! That shape is just brilliant. Im even liking Bongos now. I cannot wait for mine. BTW - rumour has it that my Classic Ray should be here within hours
11.
I'd put a jazz pup at the rear, have a nice neck scanned to fit as per your favourite and then RW blocked (MoP) and bound with a nice tobacco sunburst and black plate.
+1, at least the RW Blocked/Bound neck. Sunburst and brown tort.... I wouldnt have anything fancy electronics wise, unless its very very subtle. A P bass is exactly what it should be; simple with great tone
12.
Cheers Guys. I've actually got a set now but im in two minds about them. I put them on the Ray and felt they gave it a nice, deep thuddy tone. But at the gig we all hated them and i took them off and went back to my olsd XLs. Much nicer tone. Last weekend i put them back on again and they sounded much better at this gig, it must have been the venue i guess. Im not sure ill stick with them though. As ive said, i've used flats many time before, but these seem to be different. Maybe they are closer to how flats should sound but i do prefer a brighter tone, thats why ive stuck to Chromes in the past. I would like to try some Chromes on this bass as well at some point. I guess ill see how it goes.
I have noticed hearing Chromes that they are a mid ground between rounds and flats....a little more sparkle and grind compared to total flats. At first I HATED the idea of flats. Now I totally love em!
13. If its not covered over, personally Id be very wary. In fact I wouldnt. Im sure it must have a large tarpaulin covering you and your equip? We are playing a 'festival' wedding in Scotland in July...I have no idea what they have setup but we are obviously sorting this out well before we go.
14. Yet another tempting Berg....ARGHHHGHGHG
15.
Don't mean to complicate things further but you'll pick up a second hand Markbass amp for around £350 nowadays. Paired with a 2x12 you'd have a nice light, compact but very loud little rig. I use a LMII with a Schroeder 1212r and it's incredibly loud
You are of course right there. Basically, a Markbass LM2/3 would be PERFECT for your needs. Light, very powerful, warm and precise tone.
16. In fact, just googled that Warwick rig. If its all in good condition and fully working, (not doubting at all that it isnt) then its a massive bargain for a full setup. Personally, id get that setup....if I wanted a £700 full rig
17. This is a lot for the money. Ive not used Warwich gear, but that entire rig for £700 aint bad, (and you could always offer a little less )
18. Just how exactly do they make a 4x10 weight less than some 1x12s?! http://www.gallien-krueger.com/products_mbe_series.html
19.
I play geetar most days. I wish orange would make a black amp as well. I could never own an ugly 'orange' one - yuk!
They make black cabs....and white ones. My guitar PPC212 is all white Ltd Edition. Im pretty sure they can tolex anything black for you.
20. BUT, the caveat is, Bass will always be No 1.
21. Oh heck.... Do we have the model numbers of the cabs? The Eden might be quite nice, BUT im worried what it can handle wattage wise. That GK 1001 amp will be VERY loud at 4 ohms. Obviously its easy to be careful with your master volume so this may not be an issue. Is there a link to the Warwick rig?
22. The MB210 combo is just under £500. Now THATS a bargain. Im waiting to see reviews on the MB212. I think the new neo cabs are literally brand new.
23. All of this is very helpful. thanks everyone. I was going to quote everyone but it would have taken up about 5000 pages This is quite an interesting topic. It IS, if im honest, putting me off with the amount of rehearsals. I am prepared to carry on, and I mentioned once we gig, we should only be rehearsing when we actually need to (eg if there is a 3 week gap between gigs). I was informed when I joined that they DO get busy, and have a good reputation. In addition, the money SHOULD be good after a few months. My problem is, I feel like im waiting for the singer to get upto scratch. What they normally do is set up an entire PA, (yes, the whole thing, lifted down from a storage area) then start at 7. We work on the material until 9 or 10, then we leave. It takes me a while to get to and from the actual rooms we use. Then, we do the same thing the next day, but the PA is already set up. At the end of that night, we pull the entire PA down and all the equipment. Usually I end up home far too late. I dont understand the need for an entire PA for every practice. We need vocals through it, but thats it. They even mic up all the drums. Its a small room, and I wear earplugs all the time. Dont get me wrong, I think it will be great when we get gigging, but the way they rehearse is overkill. The PA issue is crazy! Id rather just get the vocals in and get going I also agree with the many comments above; it makes the music stale before it should be. I enjoy a little 'edge' and challenge. I dont want to turn up and just play without thinking. It also takes the groove and feel out of it. Id rather just gig and deal with it whilst im playing.
24. The new Gallien cabs/combo/micro amps are probbaly the lightest out there. I saw the spec of that 4x10! I cannot believe it! Now THAT makes it worthwhile going lightweight. Some of the really expensive neo 4x10s weigh as much as my Aguilar DB212....which is taking the point out of lightweight. THAT Gallien 4x10 is just silly light! Personally, I really want one of the 2x12 combos. 500W into 2x12....
25. Today I had a blast on my Dual Terror and American Series Telecaster. Wow, no wonder people rave about this combination. The clean is awesome, not as crisp as Fender cleans, but that compliments the bite of the Telecaster perfectly. As soon as you crank the gain, the overdrive/distortion is absolutely spot on. Perfect for heavy rock n roll/punk/rock. Kudos to Orange. Ive only had my Dual Terror a little while, and only discovered last week that one of the power tubes (EL84s) was not working correctly. It was more than likely like this from the date it was made. Therefore, on full power, 4 tube mode, there was a dirty crackle on both on the channels. Two of the tubes have been changed and its perfect. Orange sorted me out very quickly and helped with instructions. Good warranty Sounds even better now than it did before. I dont know whats inside these Tiny/Dual Terror, (and come to think of it, the Bass Terror) but the tone is amazing for the price and size.
