1. I had the same dilemna, and ended up with, IMO, the best of the bunch. 2010 Stingray 5 HS. Very comfortable, very powerful, and nice and light, (I requested a light instrument and they game me one ). It came in brand new at WELL under £2000! If you shop around and you want a new one to your spec, they are between £1300 and £1450 ish. I did try the Lakland JO5s and DJ5s and got annoyed by the lack of consistency with attention to detail. The B was pretty good, but the Ray is much more even between all the strings, (eg you get a nice articulate B and the other strings sound like they do on a 4 string!).
2. Rosewood for the win.
3. Depends on if you really think it's the one! I absolutely love Rays so I'd go for the real thing.
4. The Big Alua stunning in the flesh, and even the Bongo is growing on me!
5.
Hey mate With the bass you have / have on order i cant see you ever needing any other basses you're very lucky to be able to order 4 and 5 string versions of the same bass the Big Al will cope with the single coil / fender (ish) tones, in fact i reckon it'll cover a lot of ground. the one i tried was just amazing!!
Hi dude! This is partly why I opted for them I guess. They do 'Fender' but they do so much more. That single coil in the centre is a P bass killer! I have no GAS for a 50s P/Tele Bass (whatever they were called) anymore! Im very excited!
6. I found myself becoming more and more interested in trying different Musicman basses, as you may have guessed. I havent found one yet tI didnt like! What is it about them? Ive no idea. Part of it is the massive tone you get with such a light touch, and the other part is the sheer quality. Ive heard everyone talking about 2EQ Vs 3EQ Ray, and recently I had chance to compare. There is a difference, but I found it very easy to make a 3EQ sound more 'vintage' and thumpy....simple...roll back the treble! I never thought Id sell my 08/09 P and J, but I have. Ive kept the one P that seems to tick all the boxes for me personally, and now I just cannot be bothered to find a Fender Jazz. Call in lazyness perhaps, but the lottery of find another that has good QC and also ticks other boxes is a nightmare. So, for now Ive given up. Ive always preferred the feel of a P anyway due to learning on a P bass copy from day 1, so for now Im going to give it time and just wait for the Jazz! Before anyone suggest a vintage Jazz, its not going to happen. Im far too picky!
7. Minor update - I have sold the two basses I reviewed here and just kept the one mentioned above (3TS/Rosewood P). I found myself favouring (personally) the rosewood board, and I also found I just didnt need all of those Fenders! After the honeymoon, id say the major selling points are: Flat pole pieces, the bridges, the rolled boards, and the case. The gripes I had are: Buying them seems to have become a lottery again. You get amazing ones, (as per these reviewed and the one I kept) but you also get poor ones (I have played many in stores around me that I just didnt think were upto the standard). In addition, I think the thinner undercoat isnt always fantastic. I much prefer the high gloss of a Musicman bass. That is down to preference though. Maybe the thinner undercoat does help with tone?! I have no idea.
8. I have a lot of respect for Paul, simple as that. Ive never warmed to the Hofner bass, but the older I get, the more I like it!
9. All I know is that Fender have officially announced this on Facebook and posted pics of the 60th Telecaster. I wonder what it will be like?
10.
Very sorry to hear that. If it helps I sold my old kit to fund a TC Classic 450 and paired it with a Bergantino AE212 and it has wiped the floor with everything I've ever owned previously (which is a supidly large range of kit). The good old "Arts Council" are still offering 0% over 10 months to pretty much anyone.
Interested to know about this specific combination, I must admit!!
11. 60s Fender...with all the trimmings (case and documents). Hide it away and play it on Sundays Mind you, personally despite the fact I have yearned for a 60s Fender for years, Id never pay the asking price purely because im so fussy and id never find one im happy with!
12. As per the title, I fancy a change as the LM3 and RH450 are both warm and clear amps. I fancy trying something different and adding a different amp to my arsenal. I may live to regret this though as the amp is lovely! Price is due to immaculate condition and the fact it has no signs of use. I have owned this from new, and it was shipped stright from the Bass Merchant chaps, and was never on display beforehand. I have kept it in a very sturdy Gig Skinz gig bag for the majority of the time. Hence, it has no marks, not even fingerprints! It still even has the inspection sticker attached. Only played at low volumes. Quick, clear, warm and punchy! We all know the tone of these amps already. Set it flat, and maybe add VPE or VPF. Plug and play. The amp will be shipped in its original box with all the original packaging and instructions. I may have a brand new, still sealed L/XL Markbass T Shirt that I can throw in as well. WOW! Price: £440 including P&P. Postage: Yes, I will post after payment. Otherwise, pickup in North East Lincolnshire for £420. Payment: Bank transfer or cash in collection. Please see my feedback in my signature. My gear is always incredibly well looked after. 13. The new upgrades on the American Standards are quite nice. I've owned a MIJ bass, and for the price they are fantastic. Tone and feel aren't quite as up there as an American Standards, so I feel for the price I paid, I got what I paid for. Recent MIJ/CIJ prices are too high I believe, I think a lot of it is down to a little bit of hype. Don't gets wrong, the old prices reflected a VERY good bass for the price, but £700 or so for a new MIJ/CIJ without a case is just plain silly. Having said all this, I don't really like the idea of a thinner finish. My ideal finish is the ultra slick poly EBMM finish. Ive recently got bored of Fenders so I'm down to just one now.
14. That Bongo looks even better in that second video
15. Id love one, but at $5000, its a bit much
16.
Ive never tried Ernie Balls, Ive had Rotos and Lakland own but I found the rotos and lakelands to have more tension while I find the tis looser, and that is the reason I prefer them.
The EBs are higher tension (Group IIIs are the ones I use) than TIs, but still with plenty of flexibility. The tension isnt that much higher at all, but its there.
17. Its Bass, Treble, Lo-Mid, Hi-Mid, Balance, Volume...not in that order thought I dont think!
18.
I've only used two brands of flats. I had Ernie Balls on first - a used set supplied by a kind Basschat member. I then bought myself a set of TIs. When I had fitted two of the TI strings, I compared them. I have to say, they sounded identical. I couldn't tell that I had two different brands of string fitted. Just one observation FWIW.
Exactly, and I think the TIs are a fair whack more. I think its more the feel that people like to comment on with flats....and the ommph!
19. I might often blow the Ernie Ball trumpet, but everyone should test these flats. Im no flats expert, but I think it might convince a few of the experts that they are indeed very nice!
20. At least they sorted the guard out
21. I checked mine out last night. All of my strings sit on the middle grooves of each saddle, and the A and D are ever ever so slightly further apart (I think)....we are talking a matter on 1-1.5mm if that. When I bought the bass, the string spacing was totally equal (factory setup) and the strings were not all on the centre grooves if I recall. This was the same with my other 2 Fenders which I sold on. I can obviously adjust that with moving the A down one or the D up one, and this will mean they are all even....but it makes little difference. With regards to the dots on the board, are those pictures taken AFTER you have adjusted the string spacing to 'equal' at the bridge? If so, I can see why it appears the dots are closer to the A...as you have dropped the A down one notch/groove on the saddle. Just experiment a little...I tend to make sure my strings are fairly even over the pole piece spaces of the pickups, and leave it at that.
22. Thanks Rich, sounds great! I am eyeing up ordering a Bongo 5 HH..and the more I hear the more I edge towards the order. I know what you mean about the responsiveness. A light touch gives huge sound with my new Ray 5 HS, so I can imagine what the Bongo is like! Im glad it is not a skinny Jazz type neck. Part of my reasons for not bonding with Jazz basses is that my hands cramp a little at the nut...I feel I dont have the room I want to play with. I imagine I could get around this and get used to it, but Precision necks always fit straight away, as do Stingray necks. I like the comments about the fit and finish. I think they make an excellent bass at EBMM, especially for the price point.
23. Ive used both TIs and currently im using EB Group IIIs. I have to say, them are both fantastic. Im really warming to the EB's, and they are not as expensive as you might think. The EBs have no problems with string through the body setups.
24. 99% rosewood for me. After trying various Fender's with a maple board, I found them not to be how I prefer. I grew up using rosewood boards, and I guess Ive got used to the feel of them, and the aesthetics. I do like a maple board on a Ray, but still, rosewood just edges it. I need to try and ebony board at some point.
