1.
My sole bassic-bits endorsee, Paul Geary, has just got an endorsement deal with Orange and he told me that the AD200B is the best amp he's ever used. Interesting comment.
Definitely interesting! The amp does seem to be getting a lot of attention recently. 3-4 years ago I very rarely saw Orange bass gear, and now its quite popular.
2.
I was in Bass Cellar a few weeks ago and witnessed one of the sales staff asking a customer if he was actually going to buy anything before getting the bass he'd asked to try from the window display (this was after the customer having to point it out to him because he didn't have a clue which bass the customer was talking about) . I walked straight out. I never go in that shop if I'm down that way now.
I had a similar experience in Electro, Doncaster. Probably wont buy from them again.
3. Obviously I understand if you are, but are you set on all tube? If not, have a look at the Genz Streamliner 900. Total overkill wattage wise, but its very small, well made, and light. It also has so much clean headroom! Very very 'tube like', and thats coming from another AD200b owner. Then again, there isnt anything like a full tube amp.
4. Snap...well almost. My replacement is coming direct from TC and should be here anyday now.
5.
Nice one Gareth. I still think you would had loved the MarkBass combo but they are not cheap. I should get my acoustic bass in a weeks time or so. Really looking forward to playing it with the MarkBass and going for the full acoustic look and sound.
I think the MB was high on the list...definitely. If I ever have some spare money I might try one out
6.
Since you've cut your sig down I have no idea what you do have. I still maintain buying a Barefaced midget. At 9kg it's easy to carry, small footprint, and should suit your band set up nicely. But I guess using a DI is the more sensible option.
Main reason I think an expensive cab isnt necessary is because the RS210 isnt heavy at all...and I also like the tone. So, in itself, its like a one cab solution for these small acoustic gigs. I realise the midget is lighter, but not be a dramatic amount, plus Id want a tweeter, just in case, so it would run up as quite an expensive option unfortunately. Id also then want the vintage stying on it...yet again more expense. We are looking at Berg 1x12 territory prices... As per the comments by some of the Talkbass chaps who have compared Bergs to the RS210, they said it is a very very capable cabinet, small footprint, and most importantly, a sweet tone. So, ive probably got the best option for what I need anyway.
7.
Well i must admit i would love another 3TSB/maple MIA Jazz but as thats way out of my price range im happy to go with what i have. Its a "would like" rather than "cant live without" Amp's have never really interested me as far as changing them every now and then goes. I dont use amps at home so its only maybe 2 hours a week that i need one, and even at gigs i set and forget most of the time. I dont feel that amps are as personal as basses. Its always nice to have a good, reliable one though, and i would think your set for life now Gareth (or at least until Aug lol) Hows it all going with the new gear?
Still waiting for my replacement 750 but its coming from TC directly. The SL900 is great...the new 3EQ is very nice. Still got a fair bit im waiting on..
8. I think the Streamliner and RH750 have all the boxes ticked for me amp wise. I keep looking at others, but I know they arent as good, so I stop quite quickly. Basses....hmm...well...at the moment I feel all I want is one more P bass.
9. We do seem to have hit a good compromise and agreement as a band now. Basically, if its a very small quiet gig, Ill be purely DI'd because we have monitors to help with my sound, and the PA is more than capable of carrying the volume we need. This is probably about 60% of what we have booked. Anything larger, like functions, and halls, etc, then Ill be taking an RS210 with the Streamliner or RH750, and that will be more than enough. Obviously this can also go through the PA if we need to. I think I tried to justify buying a combo, when in reality I have separates I can mix and match, and the Sansamp/Tonehammer pedals are there for times when an amp really isnt necessary due to space and volume. Most the 1x12s I was looking at weigh as much as the RS210...and the only combos that were really suitable and justifiable are the VERY small ones eg a Phil Jones type combo, a Markbass CMD121P, or Ibanez Promethean 1x10. If Im honest, I think the 1x10 would get almost lost anyway once the drums get a little louder, so the RS210 would be more suitable and put less stress on the speakers. So, if a 1x10 is more than likely a little too small, the PA/monitors would be a better choice. I have a VT Bass Version 2 coming now, and although its technically not a DI, apparently you can still run it into the PA...so Ill try all three pedals and see which one works best. Saved myself from a bit of GAS there....which has now been redirected at basses. Heck.
10. Very similar to mine. Very nice basses!
11. I have the VT Bass V2 incoming...I'm definitely looking forward to it after all the recommendations!
12. I think when I try fretless, it will be a Ray. Nice!
13.
Now that is strange Gareth, if these are supposed to be more hi-fi than the norm as I had you down as a vintage guy. But seeing as you liked the Berg 410 and now the TC's cabs..maybe you are more modern than you think FWIW, I would like a clean clear sound and will be collecting my DB 10's very soon.
Haha, perhaps this is true...maybe I like more of a modern tone than I realise?! The RS210 is one neat little cabinet...very capable. The high end 'smoothness' is exactly what I like about it. I found the tweet on the Berg HS410 was what let it down. Fantastic powerful 4x10 though. I look forward to seeing what Mr Bergantino has in store now the HTs/HSs/AEs have ALL gone!
14. Hmmm, Ashdown 200W Drophead? PS - What are those SL112s like?! Pics please!
15. I love Fenders, and I always will. When I was younger, players had metal looking basses, Gibsons, or Fenders. I went with Fenders, and as much as their inconsistent QC annoys me, I still go back. Find a good one, and its perfection. Ive played a fair few MIA and MIM, and the latest 2008 onwards MIA are much higher quality than the MIMs. Before 2008, I was really disappointed with the MIA's.
16. Seasick Steve is a great introduction to a genre in my opinion. Although I have no idea what genre he sits in, he makes the NME kids listen to something different, which is great to broaden the mind. If he takes a listener into another style of music, hats off to him They then move into more 'respected' blues...who knows. He's a fun guy though, I like it.
17.
Anyone else think that JPJ looks like 'Bishop' (Lance Henriksson) from the 'Aliens' movie??!
+1
18. Modern day DI Pedals like Tech 21, Aguilar etc. Sheer genius, and actually works.
19. Give them a try. I sold a Berg HS410 because I needed two 2x10s....and the first trial of the RS210s was the icing on the cake. They definitely need covers, but they are well made, 'fairly' priced, 'fairly' light (the RS210 is lighter than some neo 2x10s), they are easy to move, and the tweeter is great...very smooth without that horrible shrill cheapness some tweeters have. They are VERY loud for their size, and seem to be voiced towards a mid push (although not like the Schroeders, more suble!). I hooked my Genz Streamliner up, and it worked very well. Obviously the TC amps work perfectly with the cabs. Im all about low-mids, so the RS cabs and TC amps are great for me.
20. Ive only used EB Group III Flats with my MMs...not the La Bellas. I havent personally heard anything about the magnet pull, but Im not expert on these matters. The EB flats are great, im very impressed with them. I know quite a few Big Al owners use flats, and they have neo magnets.
21. Flats work wonders on EBMM basses....soon all of mine bar one will have flats.
22.
I was really disappointed to find that EBMM had stopped doing those colours on the classics in favour of colours that look more like baby sick or Jewish racing gold.
Lol, I know what you mean. I want more pastel coloured basses, not metallic!
23. Where do you guys find these nice rare Jazzes?!
24. Very strange. Does it have anything to do with the lack of speakons? I know Genz are very hot on the use of Speakons... Bit of a shame. Tech 21 make amazing pedals/pre amps....all they need is to make a micro 500W and perhaps even a 900W version and they will absolutely fly off the shelves. Or, as per the Talkbass thread, the very slim rack-pre VT for those wanting to use a poweramp. Im still waiting for Version 2 of the VT Bass to hit the UK.
