1. Personally I would look at a five string you are comfortable with....opens up a new world. Detuning to a massive extent isn't that great, but there are strings out there built for it. I wouldn't recommend tuning 'up'...
2.
Sorry dude I meant him but since we are on it are u Gigi g much ? I was just wondering if the other Gareth plays all his basses much or weather they stay in the bedroom !
Before the beginning of the month, we were fairly busy. In fact, we hoped to be extremely busy over Jan-July before I moved away. Our plans have been changed due to our vocalist. If they don't improve, I will be moving early as the band is the only part of the town that I want to stay around for (and family). My career/education and working life are far more important than playing bass (even though obviously bass is much more fun) so it always takes a backseat. I am a collector as well and a part time musician, but like most on this site, I realise gigging and being a musician doesn't provide that much money! I get a lot of pleasure from simply playing along to music at home, so gigging and rehearsing are a real treat when I get time.
3. Get the cheaper one. Money matters, especially in this current economy.
4. Thanks all. My girlfriend has an iMac which I use (we sold the PC as no need for it with the Mac) as my computer. I'm not sure how much technology and information I need to get this going. The Korg Microsynth could go straight into a bass rig for now, and I think it has MIDI out...if that is what I need to record it on the Mac? Its one of those things...I know its going to lead to even more music gear and its a case of do I have time to learn it and use it.
5. Following from Mcgraham's topic, and my interest in electro and dance such as Daft Punk, I'd like to know about Synth's, and what type of Synth I need. It's mainly for basslines, or the odd catchy melody line. Anything from what you hear in The Killers all the way to filthy bass lines you hear in Daft Punk. The Korg Microkorg seems like a good bet. What amp would it need? How do I create 'loops'? What do I need to add drums? I'm thinking of finding like-minded musicians to create some stuff like The Rapture/Daft Punk, after all, I've wanted to for years.
6. Are Guitar Emporium back in business now?! My old MIJ P that I sold to Nigel was a lovely bass, but it was, IMO, fairly priced for what you get. It was sold for around £450, with a case. I can't understand the £1000+ prices...totally crazy. Pick up a USA Standard Jazz which comes with a stunning hardcase and you can send it back if you don't like it or the build isn't great.
7. Will the Microkorg XL allow any kind of drum pattern in the background whilst you play over it? Eg for practice. I've been looking into ways to explore more 'dance' orientated bass work. Most of my friends who play guitar/drums aren't into more electronic/electro stuff, but I am, and I'd like to explore the synth for bass and other parts for future projects. So, I figure live this goes through the PA and a monitor, and can obviously be through your amp as well (i'd use one of my bass amps for now). The price, to be honest, seems low considering what I'd spend on a new bass.
8.
If this was me I'd double check with the store that the credit you have will still be good in 6 months, a year, whatever (no reason it shouldn't be) and then just leave well enough alone for a while. Get your car sorted, make a weekend out of it and take a trip down whenever it suits. Until then just play the gorgeous basses you have. I'm not being sarky here - been in exactly the same position of being more than frustrated on repeated occasions. Most recently a bass I have was seriously in line to becoming firewood because an earthing problem would just not go away. It literally took me packing the bass away out of sight before I could think about something else.
Good advice dude. Im moving in 3-4 months or less, so I doubt ill be going down south for a LONG time due to other commitments. Im considering trying another P...I must admit I still want one.
9. Would like to know your thoughts on the OBC 4x10!
10.
Hey Gareth Are you gigging at the minute ?
We were busy right upto early Jan but our vocalist is now abroad going solo for a month or so. Normally it's 3-4 gigs a month.
11. The Bongo is volume, blend, then a 4 band active EQ (bass/low mids/high mids/treble). The thing is, the main sound of the Bongo is the very powerful 18V pre combined with neodymium magnet pups.
12. I fully recommend a full Orange stack. Rock and roll. I don't like the feel of Thunderbirds, but they are quite cool.
13. If the money is right, I'd just get one!
14. I received a 2011 American Standard Jazz in October time, and I had spent a good year deciding whether to get it. That bass is superb. It looks stunning. Very rich sunburst and incredibly dark rosewood board. So, they can get it right.
15. All good ideas, thanks.
16. Woah, hope your health improves. Is there anyway you can keep the fretless and play it at home sat down every now and then until you get better?!
17.
If that's what it takes... Specifically what don't you like about this one?
Didn't want to go into detail and cause a huge thread...Ill PM you just so you know. I won't go into details about travelling to try one, because it makes little sense unless you are in the rather unfortunate position I am in with cars/transport. The Jazz I searched for actually turned up to be stunning out of the box. Not one problem. It can happen!
18. These are the new 'lightweight CONSTRUCTION' ceramic loaded cabinets. These prices are beyond good. I don't need a 4x10 but I want this one! http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/GenzBenzfocus.html
19. 5 hours there, 5 hours back...day off work, cost of fuel, cost of staying over, currently have no car as saving for a much better one thus using the joys of the bus/train. Thanks, I know what you mean, but it wouldn't work in this case. I doubt they'd get 5 different P's for me to try.
20. Hi all Received a new Fender American Standard P bass as had some credit with the store. Just caught the cash-back offer so it was cheaper than the 'normal prices' (which have hit an all time high...silly high prices compared to 2 years ago). The bass was brand new...sealed from Fender. No one had touched it. I have another P bass upstairs. It was £200 cheaper than this one. Beautiful bass...at the same time my 2011 USA Jazz is also excellent. This new P bass ain't so great. Looks and feels a bit bodged. Fit and finish aren't as good as my other two...by far. Fender have also changed the stock strings and they also ain't so great. How long do I play the lottery for and when do I give up?! Shall I try another? Should I give up and get a Bongo? Store is being patient, I may add. No problems there. P bass being picked up tomorrow...now I need to decide what to do.
21. I'd take the Fodera and sell it.
22. Sounds like a returned item or display? I'm sure Thomann will jsut ship another
23. I had two, sold both locally to new players. Perfect intro bass, and quite well made. Awful frets though...I told them to use nickels or flats as the stock strings ate away at the frets incredibly incredibly fast! I'd like another still...but guessing that's it now. Can't believe its been a year. I ordered one when I moved home (temporarily) and moving was a HUGE mistake. Can't wait to move back to Newcastle.
24. Weird. I also think Markbass are off the pulse when it comes to the latest market. The new amp they have isn't really anything new and they are discontinuing the F1/F500!
