1.
Glad you like it Paul - good solid bass isn't it. The neck is not from a FJB 6 though, it is from Farida's P Bass - Farida FPB-18 Link here: http://www.faridagui...rida_fpb18.html Which makes this a Rosewood board. In terms of the necks I'd say this is a middle spec of the FJB6 the lowest, the FPB 18 the middle and the FJB20 the top spec. Strangely this FPB 18 P Bass version is very slim, slimmer than the necks on the Farida Jazzes which are already skinny enough. I've had a FJB6, a FJB 20 and the FPB8 (and a Hypersonic HB20 which I think is still in BC land). All great basses.
Cheers Martyn, I stand corrected, hold my hand up etc etc... I do like it but would not like to guess how long it stays with me. Variety is, as they say.
  2. It is really difficult to get the proportions right on a singlecut and then opinions are always subjective. I think this one has it about 'right' but then what would I know?
  3. Since stopping making basses and going back to a 'proper' job the bass playing has been neglected. Add to this a new interest in percussion through Mrs Prosebass being involved in Samba bands and the recent purchase of a Wavedrum Global the bass playing had almost died a death. But inspiration was on hand in the way of Marta Altesa. Check her out on Youtube. So out came my Cort fretless only to find I was rusty with my intonation all over the show. As we all know a fresh bass is what is needed in these circumstances (and one with frets for a change) so I nipped up to Bagsieblues (Martyn) last night to pick this up. This is a FJB-20 body in swamp ash (3 piece) with a KiOgon wiring loom for series switching of the pickups. Maple neck is from a FPB-18 with a Rosewood board. Nice touches are the gold logo under the lacquer and the neck plate. Plays and sounds as you would expect a jazz, from full blooded to a Jaco honk although I think a standard rather than high mass bridge would help the 'Jazz' vibe more. Workmanship and finish is excellent but it is a tad heavy with all that swamp ash.... Thanks Martyn.
  4.
AEIOU - Funked up Version...nice smooth remix,
My recent stuff comprising of my usual eclectic mix from Jazz to electronica... https://soundcloud.com/papa-bear-8
  5.
If anyone wants to take a punt I'm happy to pick it up.
very generous, may just see how it goes, would make a great fretless after an epoxy job
  6. Just called round at Martyns to deprive him of his Farida Jazz. Great guy to deal with and on my doorstep, what could be better! nice bass by the way coffee next time
  7.
I played there 2 or 3 times in The Reducers, a punk band from Bury, probably around 1979. We always had good times there and I remember the landlord tolerated the local hipsters by providing an unlit corner for them to smoke in. It was in that pub that I first heard myself played on John Peel - just before going on and I still remember the buzz.......... happy days
I must have seen you, 79 was the year I left school and had money for beer and spending time in the 'unlit corner'. I too was a punk Bands played Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then twice on a Sunday as the pubs shut then at 2.30 in the afternoon. Happy days indeed Landlord was called Sid and I think the landlady was Irene. They returned to London in the early 80's
  8.
Thanks, I'll give it some thought. Is the Joiners Arms still a venue in Chorley? I remember playing there back in the 70s.
I spent my youth in the Joiners Arms starting in 1977 until it's demise (as a rock venue) in the early 80's. Dick Smith Band were superb, Last Chicken in the Shop, Wytchfynde, Dennis Delight etc.... who did you play with?
  9.
Weird.. I have been playing fretless for a rather long period (around 25 years) and I only want roundwounds on them...I've tried flatwounds but they miss the "bite" you need to bring the string to life. it's not because it's fretless that it should sound boomy or completely dead. I don't want my basses to sound like an upright or an acoustic bass so I prefer roundwounds.. Without any problem I can go back to my fretted basses although if I had to choose I would pick a fretless as my ultimate bass instead of a fretted one...
Agree entirely (and may I say your playing on youtube is superb and inspirational) roundwounds all the way on a fretless. I have a Cort Curbow fretless with the phenolic fretboard. Roundwounds hardly touch the board and even if they did (after considerable use) the basses can be had for £125.00 so hardly a problem. Epoxy is a good idea but needs to be applied correctly and is what I used on quite a few basses I built. Superglue is another option but horrendous to apply. Best bet is phenolic. Mighty mite make some great necks with this for direct replacement on P and J basses. Some ideas here from my old blogsite http://funnbass.wordpress.com/2012/03/13/superglueing/
  10.
cafe con leche - by any chance? http://citycentralbi...ival-liverpool/
Too simple, they were not in the 'official' line up. Found him John from Matria Motherland from Liverpool would you know!
  11. He was playing in a Latin Style Crossover band at One World Festival Liverpool on Sunday. Looked familiar but I cannot place him. Forgot the name of the band which doesn't help!
  12. Who is this?
  13. Lots of good advice here. One overlooked oil is Linseed. I used linseed extensively on my builds. It can be applied thinned down with teak oil for the first 10 coats and then applied neat until the wood is saturated. It requires lots of rubbing in and has the advantage of going hard as it oxidizes thus filling in the pores in the wood.
  14. Talk about an old post ressurection. The bassist in question was Naz Adamson and I cannot find much info on him, http://cache1.asset-cache.net/gc/85094224-photo-of-nick-harrison-naz-adamson-performing-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=GkZZ8bf5zL1ZiijUmxa7QR1MlqW5HuUQ%2Fp7qOP7T6moD7sn%2BAMI2roWb6mERWjAIKC3%2BQ2wLEEmaZhxzMGGR1Q%3D%3D
  15. Just bought Mikes 'surplus to requirements' Fender Bronco 40 practice amp. It is in superb 'as new' condition. Great guy to deal with and a superfast straight forward purchase. Thanks Mike Paul
  16. I expected this to be a topic on your partners digestion problems I never have Bass Gas problems as I don't see any point in owning more than 2 basses at any one time. Mrs Prosebass does however complain constantly about my general gas problems
  17. It would seem you want a spare bass to put your mind at rest as much as for any other reason, and as such if you don't have one on the night you may be worrying. unduly, buy worrying none the less. As you will be playing more gigs you will have the same problem each time, so best bet is to buy an inexpensive back up just for your peace of mind, for this gig and future ones. Plenty of inexpensive 5 string Ibbys on ebay.
  18. any love for Chris Gartner ? right up my street http://youtu.be/Hua0KYmdRd4
  19.
Welcome to the fretless club.
Indeed, I admire your balls Phil (metaphorically speaking) for de-fretting a US 'P' , the purists will be up in arms, and some will be crying at this very moment. Wait for them to come out of the woodwork and start telling you what you have done is abhorant, against all right things, and against the will of God ! or words to that effect. I say good on you, nice playing by the way..... Paul (I,ve defretted some basses in my time) Rose
  20.
can't stand plasticote! but that's me! Disolves plastic My advice... if you want cheap spray paints (cheaper than plasticote) find out where the local graphitti artists get their stuff, it's basically modified car paint and runs about £5 a can.
Does it ? news to me, I love the stuff, some great finishes. Its actually called Plasti-Kote for the pedants among us.
  21.
whats the book about? Pictures of his basses?
Thats about it basically, I had 2 copies at one point, should of kept them, 2 x books = 1 cheap bass.... The book is worth £20.00 as the photos are top notch, but not £50.00 buy a pedal instead....
