That is not the case, there are some people out there that would prefer a Fender over a boutique bass anyday for playability reasons. Boutique instruments are not always best, sure they have the best woods and the best finishing and the amount of customization usually is fairly high but they are not by any means the best basses out there. And Fender managed to have half the world playing their instruments for half a century that's saying something
McDonalds sell more burgers than anyone else, doesn't mean they are of good quality they just sell a lot. The price of a bass has nothing to do with the cost of parts and labour. Brand association and desire to own a Fender accounts for a lot of the price they can charge. Same goes for S/H prices. Also don't get price and worth mixed up. As the old saying goes " pity him who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
 2. 1979 / 16 / School Disco / Sheena is (a punk rocker) Ramones set. Played on a 1963 Ibanez (Burns Lookalike) and shared a 50 watt amp with the guitarist with vocals through the school disco PA
 3.
Try some high tension strings from Newtone Strings. I had two basses in Drop C Standard for a good 3 years, using 45-105 gauge strings, with a similar action and tension to standard tuning! The only downside to higher tension is that they often don't go up to Standard too well. You obviously have to set the neck up to accomodate them. Remember that it's the core of the string that determines tension, not really the size/guage of the outer winding. Give Malcolm a call, tell him your tuning, and they'll sort something out for you....usually for a similar price to Elites/Rotos Si
Wise words and good advice. Just rang Malcolm for a chat as I want him to make some strings for my 28" scale basses .
 4. If you still need the nut , screws , pots , cap etc just let me know. Paul
 5.
If that doesn't workout with ProseBass could I grab it? I work with a youth group, and a spare acoustic guitar might be handy. Out of interest, was this branded 'Melody'? I bought one for about 25 quid a couple of years back, and despite terrible build quality (the neck is apparently plywood with a rosewood veneer fingerboard!) it's actually quite usable after some work.
No worries if you want to take it. The youth group sounds more of a worthy cause than mine.
Tant caps have high tolerance (accurate value) and are (mostly) polar so cannot always be used to replace standard non-polar types. They can blow quite easily of you get them too hot whilst soldering or if you have the polarity the wrong way round. Cheap ceramic caps can be +/- 10% of the printed value, which tbh makes little diff on a bass guitar tone pot. http://www.engineersedge.com/instrumentati..._capacitors.htm Fascinating stuff indeed.
+1 can't beat Metallised PETP film capacitors from CPC I use them because they are orange. Now what about the quality of the pots ?
 7.
I was thinking of sending it by courier as I don't trust other means of postage, even with an inexpensive instrument like this. Whereabouts are you based? I'll be around Worcestershire for a few days next week if that happens to be close enough for you to drive, otherwise i'll investigate courier/postage options if you're still interested. Tom
PM'd
 8.
Would the situation be different for parts, as buying the neck, the body, and the pups separately? Guess so each transaction under a critical threshold value?
Threshold is about £37.00 in goods Some things get through, the volumes are massive and smaller items sometimes just slip through. As a dealer / trader the Customs declaration must be done properly , if not you are liable to being investigated by HMRC Second-hand is no different than new. Value must be declared. Many people post items as 'gifts' but it is dodgy and the last thing anyone needs is a tax investigation.
 9. What strings are you using and how high is the action ? Paul
 10. I know a man with a lovely Godin A5 in the UK , I have played this and it is absolutely lovely. Superb on board pre-amp. Godin A5 Will be much less hassle than an import. You can expect about 21% - 22% + a handling charge. Paul

 12. What a really good gesture. If I was closer I would pick-up and sort it out , then pass it on to a deserving cause. How much would postage be ? I can get it couriered but it would be £15.00 Paul
 13.
I'd have to outsource that - if I did it, it would look like the surface of the moon after I'd finished.
I'd be happy to have a quick look at it for you. Paul
 14.
Nitro is different to Poly is different to Oil is different to Shellac. They all offer a degree of protection & make the wood look a bit prettier, that's all. I reckon Fablon would work just as well - Wayne? Pete.
Corian has always appealed to me as a material that could be good for bodies. Inert, Oil and Acid resistant, won't stain, no expansion or contraction. Bit heavy but a nice bit of milling could reduce that. Colours
 15.
I never believed that Nitro let the wood breathe and give you a real woody tone, in fact I don't believe a lot of the sh*t people say about wood, paint and tone, or neck joints for that matter. If you get the latest copy of Guitar & Bass Magazine, there is a great article on relicing that blows a few daft myths away. Your lovely old nitro finished Fender has a load of crap underneath the finish to seal the wood and stuff. The magic "Fullerplast"! I am glad in a way that my thoughts are somewhat vindicated, but sort of sad too.
agreed MDF bass anyone ?
 16.
The electric bass was designed by Leo Fender and introduced in 1951 as the first Precision bass. Leo designed it to be a more portable alternative to the double bass with accurate intonation from the fretted neck. It was loosely based on the Telecaster guitar design. Interestingly, if you look at all of the 50's literature and advertising, there's no mention of the word "guitar" at all. So therefore, the electric bass is descended from the double bass. It just happens to be shaped like an elongated guitar for convenience. Perhaps we should all call our instruments, "Fender Basses" like Leo did?
But his original patent is headed "Bass Guitar" so I guess we all play bass guitars if they are deemed derivatives of the original . I have no problem calling mine Bass Guitars whether Long Scale , Short Scale , 4 or 6 string or Piccolo .
 17. Never mind there's always another what about this ?
 18. I didn't do the trade and did not see the body, but he has an original 70's bridge (felt pads worn off) 2 pickups and the control plate complete with electronics and knobs switches etc , all well used. Are they worth buying ? and would anyone be interested. If so PM me. Paul
 19. If I decide to do the trade I'll report back tomorrow. Rather than do anything with it as it is not my type of bass (unless I make a fretless neck for it) I will probably just pass it on to someone who will appreciate it and will offer it up on basschat if that is the case. Thanks again for all the info. Paul
 20.
If you can possibly find one, link it to a Sabre neck (hen's teeth etc) or a Stingray neck (the necks are the same apart from a transfer) and you should have a very fine bass for yourself. (Can you see the serial no. on the bridge? Are there any stamps on the neck pocket?)
There is one on ebay at the moment at £650.00 BIN Will an OLP neck fit directly ? I have played and modded a few OLP's and apart from the weight thought they were nice basses.
 21. Thanks for all the info guys, it never ceases to amaze me what knowledge is out there. I have not seen the bass yet as I will be going in the morning and there may be some other bits and pieces so I will report back. Squarepusher is great, but having never seen a clip didn't realise he played a Sabre. cheers
 22.
Hi Paul. Sounds like you might be getting the best bit - Sabre necks were notoriously wonky. Nip over to the EB forums and you'll pick up most of what you need to know. They are rare and good ones are very sought after.... and I'm jealous already.
thanks for that
 23. With me knowing bugger all about these basses is there anybody out there knowledgeable with regard to them ? Reason I ask is I have been offered one without its neck ! I have no idea on values or spec but may have this one and put one of my own necks on it if it would be worthwhile. thanks in advance..... Paul
