I think you'll need to find a better hiding place before the 5 string brigade get their hands on ya. Choice of key IME are usually decided by band members in a hierarchical structure normally like this.... Vocalist Guitarist Keys Horns Drummer Members of the Audience Passers-by Bassist There are loads of times we have changed key for the vocalist which i can understand. Guitarists and keys seem to have favourite chord voicings. Brass usually like Bb etc etc. Its pretty rare that the bassist is asked for an opinion and its true that a lot of songs sound very different if you have to play them on a different part of the fretboard. That said, nearly all the great disco lines were originally played on 4 string basses. I don't agree that you need to have a 5 string to play great disco bass. And to prove it heres an absolutely monster bass line from an old fashioned 4 string
Yes but that is in its original key
Some interesting things coming out of this topic, The old 5 string debate, one reason I eventually went down the 5 route was all those 80 -90's disco songs below E and playing notes up an octave just didn't do the song justice, the other thing a 5 string gives you is even more flexibility changing keys and avoiding open strings. I guess the main point coming out here is we don't like playing out of our comfort zone. As said above we probably are best placed to change keys with least mental work than on other instruments.
+1 to this. I moved to 5 string for this reason, it's so much easier to transpose. I tend to stay away from open strings as much as possible as I prefer to fret the note which gives me more control over it.

We play a mixture of music from Coldplay, Waterboys, Oasis, The Jam, Bowie, Nirvana, Floyd, anything really but mainly rock and indie type songs. We go down well in pubs as we're not an "in your face" type band, the punters can still have a chat as they tap their feet to the music.

It seems to tick all the boxes for me, hope it's not too hard to come by when I'm over there. I'll probably email a few places to make sure they've got one in. Sam Ash seems to be the main place in NY so I'll try there.

I play in an Acoustic Instruments band (amplified) and I'm thinking of buying one of these when I go to the States over Christmas. Has anyone had any experience with them? I currently play an Ibanez EWB205 which I really like but it is a bit big bodied. This AB40 has a slim body and an intonatable bridge as well as the Buzz Feitin tuning system. Another feature is that each string volume is adjustable therefore you won't get one string booming louder than the other. Seems like a great Bass. I play in an Acoustic band and use an Acoustic Image Clarus 2R series iii through my Eden 2x10" and it sounds ace. It's got two channels so I run my mic through it as well for backing vocals as we don't use a PA system.

What was your most embarrassing moment at a gig?
PURPOLARIS replied to duncbassgit's topic in General Discussion
First gig I ever played was an all dayer in West Sussex. We were on immediately before China Crisis who were headlining so we had a pretty decent sized crowd. All day there had been this crazy drunk woman wandering round the site making a pain in the arse of herself - at one point she walked over to me & kicked me in the back for no reason whatsoever while I was sat on the floor. She quickly became known as "Cider Woman". We were a couple of numbers into our set when I noticed she was standing right in front of my monitor, so when it came to an instrumental bit I went to the front of the stage & struck my best Phil Lynott pose with my bass neck pointing out over her head. Quick as a flash her hands shot upwards & grabbed the neck of my bass & tried to pull me off the stage. I tried to pull the bass away from her but she had a grip like a f***ing tyre fitter! The only thing I could think to do, and I'm very ashamed to admit this, was kick her in the face. Luckily she must have read my mind & relaxed her grip leaving me to go stumbling back across the stage just in time to start singing the next verse of the song.
PMSL at this. I've kicked a few people that got too close to us on stage. Our singer got a fat lip a few weeks ago when a punter hit his mic stand and sent his mic crashing into his face. He should have kicked out before it happened. We're an acoustic band as well -
We play a lot of all-dayers which inevitably means shared backline/drumkit,and policy is to provide your own breakables. It's definately ettiquette to sort out kit share requirements before hand, and yes,our drummer would be peeved if a support band simply expected him to provide kit without prior arrangement.
This +1

Scrap that, the shirt arrived and I'm very happy with it. They are slightly on the large side but nothing a hot wash and a tumble dry can't fix I'll be wearing mine on Saturday night.
I've just heard from the supplier and everyone who has paid so far will have their shirts by Weds morning. They will invoice me later for the first bunch which will all be put into stock and we may then be able to beat the 48hr dispatch time. The first batch always takes longest because they need to find out which are most popular for stockling and the first run needs to be a certain size to allow the invoice to pay for the subsiquent stock, etc. Hope that's no longer than you guys were expecting and I hope you wear your shirts with pride. As always the shop is always open for further orders which will now be dispatched (I am promised) on the 48hr target. For international orders - just go ahead and buy and I'll soak up the shipping regardless of distance (can't garantee the postage time though!) Cheers ped
Still no sign of mine, I paid on the 11th Sept, have they been posted yet ?
Just thought I'd share this with everyone. Im mega proud of it and I hope you enjoy it. Bass tone on the recording is a Sandberg California JJ through a dirty marshall on one channel, a darkglass driver on another and the good ole sansamp BDDI. The grabber in the video is mine. Here it is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19VIkWvelGU...utu.be&hd=1 I'd appreciate any feedback.
I enjoyed that
An update on this - I just swapped by 2x112s for a lovely Eden 410 (about 15yrs old I think) and it is SO much louder. It sounds absolutely amazing actually - beautiful tone across the spectrum with the WTX500. I guess the Eden + Aguilar combo was just unlucky for me!
+1 to Eden Cabs. I've got a D210 XST and the tone and volume blows me away. The first time I used it I was starting to hear notes which other cabs ie my RS410 didn't pick up too well. I can only imagine a 4x10" being absolutely awesome.

Just upgraded my amp for a Clarus head so putting this one up for sale or trade. It does everything it says it should, great spec and sound. Digital effects are very good too. Has a few cosmetic issues but nothing serious and it still sounds superb. Can be used for a variety of instruments. For the acoustic player who wants it all, we offer the comprehensively featured and powerful AS100D – a 50 Watt + 50 Watt, 2x8" combo with two high fidelity polymer dome tweeters. The AS100D has been specially created for use with a variety of acoustic instruments and now boasts new and improved speakers conceived by our design experts in conjunction with Celestion. Between its four channels, this combo has the flexibility to handle instruments with piezo transducers or magnetic pick-ups, plus microphones, for both vocal and instrument reproduction. For those using two pick-ups via a single stereo jack, the two main Acoustic Channels (1 and 2) can be linked together via a 'Link' switch, affording you independent Volume and EQ controls for each pick-up. The other two channels are a dedicated Microphone (Ch.3) and an Auxiliary (Ch.4), the latter of which has phono (RCA) stereo inputs specifically for use with external audio equipment. The AS100D also houses an internal limiter to ensure you can achieve maximum output while your sound remains distortion free. Even though the AS100D's 50 Watt + 50 Watt stereo configuration offers more than enough power for many typical acoustic music venues, a stereo pair of balanced XLR DI Outs and Line Outs allow you to connect directly to an external PA system for larger venues. When playing live, one of the most difficult aspects of amplifying acoustic instruments is unwanted feedback. To help eliminate this, the AS100D features several anti-feedback controls. These include an individual Phase switch on channels 1, 2 & 3 plus two frequency controllable Notch Filters with selectable extra depth for channels 1 & 2. The superb quality of the sixteen built-in, adjustable stereo digital effects (10 Reverbs, Delay, Chorus and more) adds an entirely new dimension to the already wide range of sounds this professional combo has to offer. Additionally, there is also a stereo Parallel Effects Loop, complete with Level Control, on the rear panel. Compact and portable, the stylish AS100D offers great flexibility and is the ideal amplifier for the acoustic player who wants the highest quality performance with absolutely natural tonal reproduction.

Just ordered a black one for myself. Looking forward to wearing it at our next gig as we generally wear black t-shirts. I'm sure I could get away with wearing a smart polo
-
Could be a MIM neck on a Squier body.

I'm tempted to go for one of each
I've had a 4 and 5 string KSD but I've just took the plunge and bought myself this absolute babe of a bass! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=170692819639 Anybody owned an old BT 6 before? have any tips? Did I get ripped off? Sam
If you paid the £40 p&p cost you were ripped off. It only costs a tenner to send a Bass. In saying that the Bass looks great.
True, i know what yer saying.....we did 2 x 40 min sets, with a totally unexpected encore!!!! (we had nowt prepared so we had to play a song again!!) went down well tho, people dancing on the bar!!!
Sounds like a great gig, there's nothing better than the punters getting involved to the raise the spirits and atmosphere.
In an ideal world, stare at the guitarist, everyone in the audience thinks that all the sound comes from him anyway. In the real world, try and stay in key, but play a little bit quieter, until you remember where you are.
This
