I love my Lowdown Studio combo and it does inspire me to practice more. I've just seen that they're planning on releasing head versions to cater for gigging musicians. From the specs they seem quite 'large' at 3 rack spaces. I'm hoping they make a very interesting alternative to buying an SVT. I've done full band practices and gigs with my little Lowdown going through the PA and it was quite a lot of fun. http://uk.line6.com/lowdownhd400/
The only backup of any type I take is a Leatherman tool kit, strings, batteries & spare lead.
I agree with this 100% BIGd. It's better/cheaper to take along spare perishables for your main bass than a whole nother bass. If you have to have another bass then the choice between having a matching number of strings purely depends on how comfortable you are transposing the songs. I would also think about asking your band if they mind you transposing the songs in an emergency, as it might throw them off too if they're not ready for it.

I'm seriously considering treating myself to the new Hartke Hydrive 8x10 if it's any good when it comes out. I've never owned an 8x10 before and I've heard that everyone should own one at least once.

Answers to some common questions i'm getting via PM: I'm based in Norwich, Norfolk, but i'm moving down to Chelmsford, Essex by the end of February. I have never tried the cab with a Trace Elliot head, but it should be a good match. The build is similar to the designs by Trace and Peavey. I've plugged the details into Interparcel.net (I had to guess the weight from a similar cab) and it's come out at £13.50 delivery using 'Interlink 3'. I don't know if this courier has a depot in Norwich, and assuming that they will collect it from my home at a time when I'm not working then that's a much better price than I can get from Parcel Force. What does it sound like? That's quite subjective. I'd say it's quite full range as it's a large enclosure for good deep response and has the tweeter to cover the highs. Speed of response is good because it's ported, as well as the clarity. I've only gigged it a few times and it has sounded fine. I've only ever used 4 string basses through it, so I can't vouch for how well it handles a low 'B' string on a 5. P.S. I did have a local guy come round to try it out with his Ashdown head and 5 string. He had the sub-octaver thing on his Ashdown turned on and this cab certainly did not like the low 'B' string in any way. If you like your sound to be super-low then I would stay away from 10"s and get a good 15" speaker. Common sense to me. -
My first bass was a second-hand Japanese Squire Precision. Cream body with a white pickguard. The bass took a lot of abuse as I was learning and playing in my first teenage bands - covered in stickers and electrical tape and stored in a loft for a few years while I was at University. Has recently undergone a bit of a rejuvenation at the hands of Mr Shuker though:

I grew up in Southend, came to Norwich when I was 18. I'll be moving back down Chelmsford-way this year.

If you can stretch your budget just a little bit, the Yamaha BB-415 is a great example of a bass. Looks great and has a wealth of sounds in its pickup configuration. This will always be my recommendation for either buying a bass on a budget, or as a first bass. ...and after my glowing review of this bass, I'm selling mine off for a steal at £350 in the FOR SALE section of this site I still love it to bits, i've just quit my covers band so it's surplus to demand.
No. There's far more to a speaker than the cone material but as it's the most obvious feature to a layman this is a great marketing trick. Alex
I beg to differ that my Hartke 2x12" aluminium cone cab is a marketting trick. The sound is very different to a paper coned equivalent.

I wouldn't buy any 8x10 until Hartke have released their new HyDrive 8x10 cab. The spec sounds very interesting on paper, and if Hartke maintain their great pricing strategy it'll be even better.

Wow! Again, no strings, but looking awesome.

The LX and $$ 6 look intriguing. Don't think much of the semi-hollow or the reissue.
probably have a go at Audacity.
I would recommend having a go with Audacity too. It's a great piece of software, which is relatively easy to use. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

When I first saw this amp I couldn't believe how good it looked and it does sound great (got to use one at a gig a while back). The price is quite cheap too. Marshall still have the specs on their site: http://www.marshallamps.com/product.asp?productCode=VBA400 Only thing that put me off is that the power section is packing EIGHT!!! 6550 valves which I believe will cost about half of the retail price to replace. Ouch.

I bought a pair of Sennheiser eH350s from Sound Control. I went to the shop with in mind to spend about £40 for some closed headphones, but 'vented' so I can wear them for long practice sessions without feeling uncomfortable. I now find it far easier to hear what's going on when trying to work out basslines. Great investment.
That said, a fair few people are making lightweight yet powerful heads and cabs - Bass Gallery lightweight amps page
I just did a double-take when I saw Hartke in their 'lightweight cabs' section!

I tried one about a year ago and loved it. It's a Fender, but modern and all the 'upgrades' that you'd do to a regular Fender bass anyway.

It's screaming to be put out of its misery. Burn it!

Ooh. That sounds interesting. You have PM Perry, thanks. -
I'd sell a kidney before I let go of my Warwick Thumb bolt-on. Haven't seen, heard, or played a better bass yet. My wife considers it to be a 3rd party in our relationship. That doesn't stop me from aspiring to own a 6 string Thumb though (my playing ability stops me short, thankfully ).
