1. I usually travel to rehearsal/gigs on public transport so rarely have any back up. I do thoroughly check over all the gear prior to a gig. I tend to gig one bass my Mex Precision.....and so far touch wood it's all been good
2. Our band is a collective. Everything equal so we would only expect the person to pay their share. sh*te happens.....next time i may not be able to attend at short notice.
3. I find YouTube excellent.....some good stuff posted there. Josh Fossgreen, Scott Whitley etc.
4.
Yup.
👍 thanks
5.
Don't know how many of you remember Chris Bryant Music, the big shop on the corner of Charing X Rd with the orange signs? Those signs now read "Wunjos" and the shop is being refurbed right now ...
Is that the one just along from Rockstop?
6. My day (or night) job is an Electrician on the Underground. My music activities are purely hobbyist, as a band we pick and choose when to rehearse and when we want to gig. We are quite lucky as a band that in the local area we know a couple of promoters that will always slot us into one of their venues.
7. Definitely listening to lots of music picking out the basslines and trying to copy them. It trains your ear somewhat to recognise the notes. Also learn the fretboard.....by this i mean where all the notes are as it helps when you move on to scales and modes.
8. I have a Mex Precision that i love and it is my main gigging bass.....however i recently bought a Yamaha 424x as a back up and wow i"m really torn as the Yam is excellent! :/
9. I have a Fender Precision made in Mexico. Mine is very good, well built and sounds good. In my honest opinion for the same money i can buy a Yamaha 1024 which has the PJ pickups for a wider range of sounds and you get a superbly built and sounding bass. I love my Mex P and i love my Yam 424.....it really comes down to playing before you buy really. Plus there are many other basses out there in that price range too so there's no easy answer
10. What have i missed? Who are we hating today?
11. £600 buys a lot of bass.....if you like Yamaha's you could try the BB424 or BB1024..... I have a 424X and it's excellent.
12. I'm affraid this one is practice, practice, practice.....i normally sit down and home playing the bass accoustically and just keep singing along to myself.
13. That set list is crying out for some Prog Rock, maybe something with bit of a blues/jazz exploration.....or even dare i say jazz/blues lasting a minimum of 13 mins.
14. Have you run this opportunity past Blue yet? He has strong views and good experience on joining bands so i would wait for that advice first.
15. Think of all that new gear you could buy with the added income.....
16.
All of my basses have been gigged within days of buying them, in at least two cases, on the day of purchase (one of my Precisions was gigged while deciding whether to buy it or not, I still have it so it must have passed!)
We don't gig that often so it may be a while before my Yamaha get's gigged. I am determined that basses shouldn't be ornaments just to look at.
17.
I had to a do a gig at a pub for Tramlines in Sheffield which was outside and for at least half of the gig it was raining. Luckily I was shielded for the majority, but it probably didn't do the instrument much favours...
That there is real mojo!
18. Do what you and the band agree to do. In all honesty advice from here will muddy the water.
19. I have a jazz bass with the name Fame on the headstock. It is very well made, has SD 1/4 Pounders in it and sounds great. The neck has a really nice feel. Only other bassists may know that it was made in the Mayones factory. Personally i don't care much what the bass looks like or who it's made by but i do like nice feel and good sound.
20. I only have one bass that has never been gigged (yet). P.S. Just read this back to myself. I should add that i have more than one bass
21. I have my basses sprayed by a cabinet maker friend. Ultimately car sprayers, furniture sprayers know what works on the materials they have to work with.
22.
This is the bass. I want a clear gloss on the body and headstock.
This looks fantastic as is.....
23. Nice one.....like any good apprenticeship you have to put in the time and gain practical experience so well done 👍
24. A sprayer is well knowledged in making the paint adhere and finish on whatever they are painting. If the body needs sealing they will know.
