Anyone ever worked out the groovy riff at the start of this ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHj-JjcAo3k Would love the music/tab of this....one to play with a synth bass effect for sure

Big Pothead Pixie Gong fan here; been to a few Gong conventions, notably Glastonbury when Steffi Sharpstrings and Steve Hillage played the Om' riff (Master Builder) together for the first time - totally mind blowing......i didn't get to see the end as i was shortly throwing up outside...ahem (Cider etc !!!). I was also in the Planet Gong family club, so bit of a Gong geek i guess I briefly played in a band in Glastonbury, Altered Native, who made it onto the Gong outer family mandala...that was a proud moment . Albumswise...well I've got most Gong, Mother Gong, Gong Maison, New Your Gong, Shapeshifter Gong, Planet Gong, Mike Howlett, Steve Hillage, Pierre Morelen etc etc albums...few on vinyl too and lots of the Gong associated bands - Here & Now (Big up Keith the Missile!!!) Invisible Opera, University of Errors etc. Favourite Gong tunes: well Cats in Clarks Shoes off the Shamal/Wingful of Eyes album is an all time favourite and i love A sprinkling of clouds on the You album......but then i love loads of Gong including the Techno remixes......too many to mention. You never blow your trip for ever A nice cover

Hawkwind - some great (and under-appreciated) bass playing
Raslee replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
We've got some chappy here in Plymouthland who apparently played in Hawkwind...certainly looks like he did Now playing in a 10 piece soul cover band. I personally love my Gong...some fantastic bass playing from Mr Howlett...but i'm sure this should be another thread!!!! -
I was at practice tonight too. Actually snapped the string in the EP2 from doing a load of wub wub! whipped the baseplate off it & fixed in seconds. We've got a blues gig next month, so I thought I might invent a new genre. Bluesstep. Well Rasta man, what's your next moog gonna be? Glad you gave the 101 a chance, it does add a load of lovely bass to the sound.
Haha, like the idea of Bluestep..."Woke up this [s]morning [/s] evening...WAMP WUB WUB" Next Moog you say...next mortgage , joking aside though I'm really loving the LPF now that i'm getting into it. Interestingly i've started jammin with a new band recently who are quite into Dubstep which to be honest is a bit new to me (any decent music education gladly received, particularly reggae orientated dubstep)...soooo was gonna ask what you guys use with your LPF's for dubstep? - whats the cheap skate route? Do i need tremolo for that warble? My budget is limited right now so am hoping to rely on the trusty Zoom 506II for sounds ...but may get a few cheap pedals come payday Also another Q for Pantheairsoft- ,hope you dont mind mate, you mentioned about using modulation after the Moog LPF...i've been given a Ibanez Phase modulater PM7. Should i put this after the Moog (in my case last in my chain before returning to my LS2)? Also are you guys using compression or limiters at the end of your chain to stop peaks ? Thanks as always for your really helpful responses
I made comment on my thread for the Barefaced Big Twin T, but worth mentioning here - If you are using your Barefaced Dubster cab with this set up, you'll never get the swells to sound like on the vid - The cab is designed to have pretty much zero highs, and to get the top of those swells you need lots of high, preferably a tweeter. You'll get fat synth bass, but not up to the 'key's' territory.
I've tried the set up with both my Dubster & a 2x10+1x15" both with tweeters, agreed a bit more swell with the tweeters although i do get nice clarity through the Dubster, its not too muffled. However effects wise, last night I tried my JD BassWah set up with my 506II and seem to get a better sweep and sound although there is a mid scoop on the filter from the wah thats not too great when pressing down on the pedal slowly. I'm wondering if maybe I should have got a decent synth pedal rather than the Moog MF101...the MF101 makes for a great funky envelope filter, and i'm sure much more that i haven't discovered, but its not doing what i thought it would do synth sound wise. Any recommendations on synth pedals that you can use an expression pedal with? I see the Boss SYB5 allow for an expression pedal but couldn't find any youtube vids where they're using the expression pedal.
Dub tone - you don't need any other effects, although octave Down can't help. On the LPF - Res - 0 Mix - 10 Env - doesn't really matter 2 or 4 pole Fast Boost the bass on your Pre/before the filter. Start with cutoff about half way, then start playing and slowly roll the cutoff back until it starts to go sub-tastic and remove all the top end. The more bass in the mix before it, the more pronounced it'll be. Octave down will fatten it more - seems the frequency response is best around the 12th fret on the A string when using an Octave down. If you engage a fuzz before it you won't hear it with the cutoff that low, but if you then swell the cutoff with an expression pedal you can add some lovely synthy fat swells (add a little resonance if you do this, about 4). Shep
Nice one mate, shall have a play with that tonight
& whilst I mind, put your 101 after the 506. I've been thinking about doing a video review of some settings, so maybe soon .
Yeah my signal chain is send from the LS2 into the 506, then out of the 506 into the MF101 and out the MF 101 into the return of the the LS2 - my exp. pedal is on cutoff. What settings on my MF 101 would you recommend to get that sound in my first video......i'm assuming to use the fuzz setting and octave setting on my Zoom 506II right? Any help muchly appreciated Interesting you said about the video review of settings, i just trawled Youtube and could hardly find anything on settings, particularly with bass guitar. Found that the MF101 makes for a killer envelope filter though, very Bootsy Cheers folks.

New Cab of Dooooooom! Barefaced Big Twin T
Raslee replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Amps and Cabs
Looks a great cab you got there; i'm using the BF Dubster for dub reggae, that has some serious lows but with good mid range definition. Amazing how BF are knocking out these cabs that can go so low and loud yet so light -
Or just set your EQ flat, roll in a little more bass and use the Moog MF-101 to cut the top end from the sound and fatten up the lows like you've never heard!!!
Ok i've got the MF-101 now, how do you get the dub tone you mentioned, settings? I'm struggling to get the sound in my first video i mentioned. I've got my Zoom 506IIBass with just a fuzz & octave sound from it and then going to the MF101 - do i need a better octave/fuzz pedals?? - I'm leaning back to getting a synth pedal and perhaps that going into the MF101. I'm using an expression pedal on the cut off on the MF101 with the cut off knob about half way. Any suggestions on killer settings on the MF101 gladly welcome (Loving it as a funky envelope filter)

I picked this bass up as i had a bit of P Gas but i've decided i'm a jazz man & a new bass shortly to arrive on the scene and a small debt to wifey means ones got to go. This bass is a great P bass, looks, plays and sounds great. It is of course a fake Fender Precision replica made to look like an 80's Japanese P bass. It was such a convincing fake that when i got i wasn't sure if it was the real thing and took the bass apart only to find 80's date stamps on the body & neck ....these are of course fake & not done by me i hasten to add -i bought the bass like this. Not sure why this was done, innocent replication? or one can speculate possible fraudulent activities or whatever - who knows!!!...... anyhow, none the less, the bass is really good quality and certainly looks a great replica. I have no idea of the parts used in the bass but it plays lovely and on par with a decent Mexican/CV Squire..if not better. Looking for £170 shipped, no case but will be well packed. Pictures here: https://picasaweb.go...feat=directlink More available if you need. I shall be shortly listing it on evilbay if no interest here. Forgot to mention, there are a few marks on the body as can be seen in the pics, the worst being on the back of the body 80's mojo haha. Also to allow for truss rod adjustment i have filed the scratch plate and chiseled a small groove by the neck.

Cheers guys, I've got some love developing for this bass and i'm seriously giving it some major consideration on keeping the 5501 and going all passive. I spent the evening last night playing it followed by reading TB's Lakland 01's owners club...there was some great advice on there about going all passive and other mods too, big cheers for that signpost Bigwan I'm thinking Nordy's big singles and wiring VVT like a jazz but i will contact the Wizard pick up guys to see what they say too. I don't think i can afford to be without a Lakland 5 whilst i am needing 5 strings, they're just grrrrreeeeat B's and probably the only decent 5 string that will be in my price range . I let my Laky JO5 go in the past during some financial difficulty, my wife witnessed a deterioration in my mental health with the loss of the JO5, attachemnt disorder, PTSD and i heard and saw Lakland that others did not plus my drummer had not forgiven me until i got this 5501 If i do go the passive route I guess I will keep the active electronics in case i decide to go back to active or want to try the NTMB with my new pick ups. However I'm not going to withdraw the trade just yet , erm i think so, in case something comes up but the new lion of judah transfer on this bass was just meant to be and well..... come payday an oder for those new pickups could be just the answer.
Hi, I've got nothing suitable to offer in exchange I'm afraid. Are you possibly considering a straight sale?
Hi, I may do if something suitable comes up, i would need to replace it pretty quick though as i'm using the 5 regularly at the moment. There is a 5 jazz on here at the moment and i have mailed the guy for some info....i'll keep you updated. Thanks.
Sorry the 55 isn't working for you Lee. If it's any consolation, I know what you mean - I'm a passive head too. There are a few guys on that American site who've done exactly what you're thinking about - installed passive soapbars and simple V/V/T controls and been very happy, but it'd probably work out the same to sell and get a JO5. This is a cracking bass folks (I sold it to Lee as I've moved away from 5 strings)...
Hi mate, the bass is working out great its just my sound for reggae that i'm struggling with, if i was doing funk/rock regularly i would definitely keep it as it sounds great for that style. I may still keep as it plays really nice and i love the 'black beauty' looks.....just looking at my options really.
Can i ask what the toggle is for? Has this bass been upgraded from stock?
Could well be your old bass mate, i have no idea. The toggle, i am guessing, is for maybe a split coil setting? It does seem to thicken and thin the sound depending on the setting. I feel the bass has a lot of substance in its sound but i guess that depends what your looking for, i thought it was quite funky when i had rounds on it and got a nice slap tone (not that my slap is any good) and a good variation of other tones....just lacking in definition in the lows for me in comparison to my 4 string passive jazz.
Lovely bass - what about sticking some flats on her as a first measure and then having a look for some passive pick-up/circuitry combos - give Andy at Wizard pickups a call ? I've got some flats on a Lakland LOG 5-string (55-64 I believe they call the 5-string Bob Glaub nowdays) by the way - Killer reggae bass !
Yeah i've got some chromes flats on her now, sounds great. I really do love this bass in all ways and am seriously giving it some consideration about passive pick ups. I've been looking at the Norstrand Single coils as a possibility but they certainly are not cheap! I never thought about wizard, cheers for that. I really like Lindy Fralins but cannot find any 'soap bar' types that would fit. I guess i would need some help with wiring too if i go the new pick up route. My 4 string jazz, with Lindy Fralins, sounds great through my Orange terror bass amp and the bass sound is easily controllable with the tone alone but i'm struggling with the amp in active mode with the 5501 to control the bass frequencies as smoothly....in the reggae i play i need good definition in the low frequencies and it takes a lot of fiddling with the mids and the bass knobs, sometimes added treble, on the 5501 to get something i'm happy with but it still doesn't quite sound as good as my 4 string jazz.
