1. I've uploaded it to BBC Introducing. Will be expecting a rejection any time now.
2. Yeah, but a microsecond is all it takes to throw a song off course. On occasion, you'll not recover.
3. OK...hopefully this will work. Have a listen. I know it's not going to be everyone's bag (and I appreciate that). I've always been happy with the overall arrangement, I know that parts of the vocal are a bit hokey, so just accept that as it is... 4. Not certain whether this is a general discussion or an off topic. Anyhow, here goes. About three years back I wrote something seasonal that we could roll out at Christmas gigs. When someone asks whether I have any band recordings, my wife always says 'Play them the Christmas song,' so irrespective of the month, I tend to play people that song. I figure people get (to repeat an overused quote of mine) warm and fuzzy about Christmas and you know, I've never had a detrimental remark about the tune. Most people will also follow it up with something akin to, 'If you can get <insert name here> to listen to it...' So I fired up the multitracks this morning (I haven't listened to it for about a year) and I'm suprised how good it sounds. I mean better than good to my ears. I don't know how to write a million seller any more than the next guy, but I would just like to see if anyone would critique it. Recently, we did some gigs for Musicians Against Homelessness/Crisis and I suppose if there was a way of generating monies for this, I'd like to do it. Anyone got any ideas?
5. Listen to you guys. We fired our last drummer for a number of reasons, but insofar as following him? Get out of town. We asked him what he actually listened to when we were playing ("Just the drums, maybe the vocals"), which we followed up asking by whether he actually knew how the songs went after three or four years of playing them (cue embarrassing silence). There were many times where I just wanted to stop the song and start over. Dropped sticks, fills on bar three, hardware failure, timing etc. He's a lovely, lovely guy, but no way should he have been in the engine room. By the end we just expected things to go awry, so we just kept going in the hope he would realise where the song was and catch up. Our guitarist summed it all up quite succinctly by saying the difference between Blink182 and Busted is Travis Barker.
6.
Plenty of guitars and some basses with lots of über expensive vintage gear (some questionable IMO, but too much of the same on different stalls for me, with barely any room for trying stuff out if you wanted to. The guy asking the exhibitors to turn it down over an under powered PA whilst the GB stand was giving it its usual whackety, thwackety was amusing, although I didn't find it that loud compared to some shows. I didn't go to any of the live performances as these were in a totally different building. All in all, it seemed a bit amateur and poorly organised compared to other shows I've been to over the years.
I was toying with going to it and suppose your post reinforces my reasons behind staying home with a chesty cough and watching Chelsea thump Manchester Utd. 4-0 instead.
7.
If you can pay..the world is your lobster.
Pay? You mean there's money to be made from this gigging malarkey?
8. Did anyone attend that guitar show at Kempton Park yesterday (23/10)? Any good or was it just a car boot bun fight?
9. Blue I've known the guy for seven or eight years; we gigged several times with his old band, he depped with us a few years back, plays on another project I'm involved in and jumped at the opportunity to do this with me. We are friends, our wives likes each other etc. It's easy to say I can vouch for his character, but in this case there's just stuff going on outside of music.
10. No one is allowed to use the word schadenfreude in any replies! [Edit) Oh and for the record, we rehearse in Hurst, near Twyford in Berkshire.
11. So we gave our drummer the Spanish archer and now his replacement has bailed out due to stress and depression. We're in a bit of a mess...two gigs in November (Phoenix, High Wycombe and Fighting Cocks, Kingston); need a dep. Anyone care to loan us their drummer for a couple of weekends? Punky rocky. Easy material. 45 minute set.
12. Anyone remember this? Poll tax riots. Footage of Macari's getting turned over from about 6'30".
13. I have a Jeff Ament Lull. As I'm 6'4" it actually looks normal-sized on me.
14.
Without wishing to hijack the thread, can I ask how they balance? I had a beautiful TB a few months ago, I loved the sound and the neck felt good as well, but oh dear, massive neck dive and just so uncomfortable to play on the strap, so do these sound more or less the same, and do they hang well? Once again, sorry to go a bit off topic.
I sold my NR to Gus...if you search through my threads you'll turn up some background to the issues I had with it. That said, while tonally it didn't hit the spot with me (at the time), it did play beautifully; hung nicely on the strap, the neck was nice and fat (totally unlike reverse 'birds) and it's the only recent bass I genuinely regret selling on.
15. I do profess to being a little confused as to the Peach Guitars and GAK pricing as neither site is showing these basses. Remember its the non-reverse model, not the better known reverse one. You can't blame internet pricing either as the model is discontinued and unavailable. Look, I didn't go into London with the expectation of coming home with a bass, plus those who know me will know that I bought one of these basses new when they came out. It was more a case of having a punt. I'm up in London again at the end December and wouldn't be suprised if they're still on the window in two months.
16.
I would have mentioned how long they'd had them in stock for and if they shift them on for a not unreasonable discount (say...10%) they'll be able to make room for something else that'll sell faster.
They didn't even want to start the conversation! The guy I spoke to was all flat out, 'Nah, mate, £899.'
17. The price alone prompted a search online. Never actually heard of the guy. Visually, the design doesn't strike me as being that different from the models in the SR range, although it carries a high gloss finish. Hardware and electrics are just Hipshot and Barts. Thing is, we live on a planet with over seven billion other people and somewhere there's someone who is thinking that the price is right for that bass. Ibanez may not even sell ten of these. Perhaps it's more a case of the company telling the world they can up their game and shouting, 'Hey, look what we've built here.'
18.
Fair enough, but If they have priced them at there minimum mark up rather than loading the price, then thats what they want. Where they not worth the asking price? Or do you refuse to buy anything on principal unless you can get a discount?
I just felt in the mood for a haggle more than anything else and with my wife wined-up from lunch and giving me two thumbs up, I thought, 'Why not?' I've worked in retailing, albeit in the supply chain side. From experience, if you hold onto stock for that long, you can pretty much kiss goodbye your profit and should simply cut your losses. Irrespective of whether or not I only purchase at a discounted price (I don't...I've never haggled for guitars), but taking into account the above, I just figured it was worth a punt. I'd have paid £750-800. My debit card was twitching in my pocket. Twitching!
19. Up in the smoke today and imagine my suprise in seeing a pair of Gibson Thunderbird NRs in their shop window. £899 a pop. Pelham Blue and Sunburst. Also imagine my surprise when my good wife said if I wanted one of them, I should go in and haggle. 'Best price?' I ask. '£899' 'Bye then.' I saunter down to Denmark Street. Dull. Walking back towards Macari's, I duck in again asking whether they're open for a bit of price-negotiation. Negative again. Thing is, if the price was right, I'd probably have bought both of them. There's probably little profit to be made on a bass they've had in stock for three years or so and they could gave covered their business rates for this month.
20. If I can add something else, isn't this thread just another opportunity for members to just brag about what they've got?? I'm actually a little distressed at the lack of photographic content so far.
21.
So i know lots of people here have lots of basses but do you have an order of merit too?
Err, no; bass choice is fairly random, perhaps minutes before I leave the house. No favourites. I may choose one over another based on freshness of the strings, but they're all similarly set up, all play pretty much the same. It would be easier to list the ones that never get gigged!
22.
I have a tuner - don't need one in an amp. More to go wrong!
I've got tuners too, but the thing is, this head could truly offer (me) a one box solution; a built in tuner, irrespective of its quality, becomes of one less thing to carry.
23. Just to add more to this, I won a Barefaced Big One (15/6) at this years SE Bass Bash. It sounds huge compared to the Hydrives. Insofar as louder, I'd say (with the same settings applied), plugging my rack into the Barefaced, then into the Hartke units, the Barefaced is louder by a country mile.
