Old car stereotypes die slowly, don't they? I know exactly what you mean about Alfas, but in my case it's all based on (unhappy) memories from the 80s.

"Dad, I want to play bass, who should I listen to?"
Happy Jack replied to interpol52's topic in General Discussion
Leave a thread for 24 hours and what do you come back to? Recommendations for 21st Century music include Leonard Cohen. Tributes to the 'Now' series of compilations. Every time I think about that, I hear Brian Glover's voiceover from way back when. http://youtu.be/quupYqZDQBg And no one recommending drum'n'bass. -
That Tricky Audio stuff is seriously lush.
I think the idea is, we all have favourite or inspirational players, so name 5 albums that you think epitomise great bass playing.
I do get that this is supposed to be a fun thing, and not to be taken too seriously, but I'd be quite concerned if anyone actually followed that advice. I can't think of a faster way to discourage a newbie on bass than by pointing him/her at full fat Jaco Pastorius or at Marcus Miller in "look at me! look at me!" mode. If one of my kids genuinely wanted me to recommend some of my favourite bass work to help them get started, I'd just say two words: Duck Dunn. -
Is that because of the horn?
If I'd have listened to my Dad I would have ended up listening to Sabbath, Zep, Deep Purple, Rush and Yes. I ignored him and listed to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and RATM!
Your Dad was right ... -
My favourite rig for DB gigs is an Aguilar TH350 into a Barefaced OneTen. The whole thing, complete with cables etc., fits into a standard cajon bag which I can wear as a backpack while towing my DB behind me. This rig does NOT sound as good as my Bass Tank doubling amp, or as some of the glorious amps & combos at the Double Bass Bash earlier this year, but it combines extreme portability (it's far lighter than most of my rigs) with being very sound-engineer-friendly where I'm going through the PA (excellent DI and very high-quality backline). If the slight drop in quality of reproduction of "that DB sound" worries me, then I simply add a Fishman Plat Pro pedal to the rig.
My eldest daughter started off wanting to play Roundabout and I didn't even like Yes.
My point. -
I'm thinking maybe just Jack from now on.
That could have been phrased better ... -
It's easier to just let Sterling explain....
What a dreadful piece of PR puffery, every word of it scripted, vomit-inducing background music, heart-warming tales of doing good for the benefit of hard-working musicians just trying to feed their families ... euch! And if the 5-pole idea for a 4-string bass is such a great idea, and was known about 40 years ago ... erm ... why is the marketplace not filled with such basses? All a bit sad given that it's clearly a very nice bass, though seriously over-priced.
Great basses, I have two in the Chocolate Burst finish. The Butterscotch colour looks ace though!
The Chocolate would go well with the Butterscotch, and adding a Cherry burst would really take it up a level. I'd steer clear of introducing Mint to the mix though.

How bizarre is all this? I get the impression that a number of posters on this thread don't actually have children. The only answer that will actually get you anywhere is, "What/who do you like listening to? Fine, play along with that then." If I'd asked my father what to listen to if I wanted to hear great basslines, I'd have spent the next 20 years listening exclusively to Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. Your kids don't want to listen to "your" music. That's part of being your kids. -
Smooth hound doesn't seem to like using a battery pack with another pedal, generates a load of noise....
A-ha! There was me thinking that my Smoothhound just didn't like the battery pack ... it never occurred to me to try it with a battery pack on its own. Might have a play with that later. -
Johnny Johnson needed, to play some rock & roll

NBD: Wingbass (Half-sized mini bass NOW WITH GK system!)
Happy Jack replied to ped's topic in Bass Guitars
Wingbass + sand + salt spray = Happiness? I don't think so. -
We're putting together (or trying to) a classic rock'n'roll band, either a 3-piece or if we can find a decent pianist a 4-piece. The aim is to play the original music ... Chuck, Elvis, Buddy, Little Richard, you get the picture (yes, we see). What would be great is to find a pianist who actually enjoys playing this stuff, and playing it properly. It's always good if everyone in a band can sing, do BVs, contribute harmonies, but it's not actually essential. We're based in NW London - Harrow & Kilburn.

What I chiefly need right now is a guitarist who actually enjoys playing this stuff, and playing it properly. There will be no 24-bar solos played at ludicrous volume with a foot on the monitor and the face distorted into a rather sad grimace. If the song originally had a guitar solo then that's what gets played. If the song had no guitar solo then there won't be one. It's always good if everyone in a band can sing, do BVs, contribute harmonies, but it's not actually essential. We're based in NW London - Harrow & Kilburn.

Interesting how this album splits opinion so thoroughly. For me, this is easily a Top Five favourite and one of the records I tried to play along to most when I was starting on bass.
-
But only if you completely wreck your bass first, as far as I can see from that picture.

Well, "know" is putting it strongly, but my reasoning is as follows. My understanding is that, broadly, to double the volume you need to increase the power by a much greater factor, perhaps as much as 10x. If I know that my rig is capable of a given (ridiculously loud) volume, but I am actually playing at a much lower volume, then I'm pretty confident that I'm using much less than half the power of my amp. My method of testing this is to count the number of amps that I have managed to blow up so far. By a bizarre coincidence, it turns out to be exactly the same number as the number of bass strings I have snapped to date. Zero.
still not heard from anybody that's hired a dep and it's not worked out for whatever reason, have they always been a success then? because I've seen them, one dep guitarist I saw used a music stand (fair enough) but was really low in the mix, when you could hear him you knew why
Well since no one else has picked up on this, I'll offer what I can. I was invited to dep a few years ago for an Elvis tribute act appearing at a private party. The line-up was built around a genuine, honest-to-God Elvis impersonator, Vegas jumpsuit era with the hair and the shades, who was a regular performer on the Elvis circuit using backing tapes. He had two guitars, bass and drums. One guitarist was a regular member of a Shadows tribute band. The other guitarist and the drummer were one half of a gigging heavy metal band. And then there was me. We had a single rehearsal in a studio somewhere down Streatham way, which didn't go particularly well, and then it was show time. That gig remains in my memory as the single worst gig I have ever been involved with in any capacity. To this day, listening to the recordings brings tears to me eyes. And that's not just because I'm laughing so much.
