1.
My brain is clearly addled from the drugs. It is a 1+/1- and earlier I meant a 1+/2+. Dodgy lead or amp problem. I'll send you another lead and you can disassemble and reassemble your current lead and keep it as a spare.
Glad ya said that, as my standard speakons work fine with the LH1000 in bridge mode and Hartke cabs! Ace.
2. IIRC, expect to pay another 25%-28% on top of the price (inc shipping), which will include Customs and Excise duty, Courier charges and VAT. Then don't forget if you are buying from the US, a certain issue with a difference in mains voltage. Some amps are switchable, some require replacement components that can be costly too.
3. I clicked the link, read the title then closed the page. I'm pretty sure I know how the thread panned out without reading it - and that's nothing against TalkBass, because I would probably gloss over a thread on any forum asking for opinions on a person's playing. Been a Moderator long enough! ha ha!
4.
I had an extended email exchange with Alex Claber about using a pair of Big Ones as a full-range PA solution. To sum up, they would work a treat IF fitted with tweeters. I think he's developing a full-range PA cab based on the Big One anyway.
Promising information!
EA VL110s are great for this, not least because they have a woofer, a mid-range driver and a tweeter and I presume a 3-way crossover - you can adjust the balance of tweeter and midrange driver.
I'd spotted the pair of VL's for sale - but I don't really know much about them. If they sounded great for the application as well as bass guitar, I could see maself looking in to those further.
5. Thanks for the replies guys! It was a bit of a strange question to pose - as in most part we tend to plug in to PA which is capable of reproducing a better quality audio - i.e CD's etc. - Anyone ever tried playing CD's through normal bass guitar cabinets? ruddy awful! ha! - So it was interesting to find out what companies are TRULY manufacturing cabinets that can handle a full range of audio AND actually sound good. Notice I am not sating 'flat response' here - because even most PA cabinets and home HiFi cabinets aren't flat response. - but ones that can reproduce music to a high quality. Then add on top of this, being man enough to handle bass guitar too - indeed being able to be used for say drums and percussion with high SPL transients too. From a size and weight standpoint, the Acme B1 seemed like a good idea, being 3 way. Oh, in response to the 'rig' thing - the plan would only have been for a smaller combo sized solution - again, like the B1 or maybe as far as a 2x10 but not really for full on gigging - just workshops and tutoring when I am out and about. Gigs would be handled by PA and backline.
6. Hi Krohurte. I'd try at least taking the valves out and reseating them to begin with just in case there is a tarnished contact. Check the switches are working correctly with a multimeter too. I *can* tell you that valve 2 feeds the dirty channel alone and V1 the clean channel, so see if you can try another valve in that position - maybe just swap the two round as they are both the same to see if the problem moves to the clean channel instead. If that doesn't help then it's time to delve a little deeper! The channel switching itself is only controlled by the footswitches, no signal passes through them - so it maybe an 'active switch' (Which are all J175 FETS) that could be messing about. Or - well, I'm loathed to suggest the 'step up' power supply for the valve HT as I'd expect the volume drop to happen on both channels - maybe it could be the power supplying the heaters on V2. There's quite a few possibilities - but at first try the easy stuff, like swapping the valve out! How do you find the V-Twin for bass? I nearly bought one off ebay last year! Rare beasts for sure!
7. My findings so far about pricing my lessons is that if I do get any reticence over an hourly rate, it's in some part due to the 'customer' not getting actually what goes in to making up that rate. They seem blissfully unaware that like plumbers and electricians, we are (usually) self employed. In a 'normal 9-5' employees get all their sickness covered. Their holiday, perks and taxes mysteriously get worked out for them before what's left gets deposited in their bank accounts. When we break down *our* hourly rate and work out what would go out as taxes, expenses and our holiday and sickness allowances - we don't actually earn that much at £25 per hour. The tendency to 'be nice' and drop our rates is fine if you have so many students chomping at the bit, but in these times where some are struggling, it's still important to put the correct value on what you do and not under sell - value who you are and what you offer. If you under sell, you're not covering your bills. Remember, if you put your prices down, it's much harder to put them back up again. This probably all means diddley-squat if you have no students though and you have to start somewhere!
8. Excellent! - I'm happy to hear of your findings sir! - Have you also found improvement in the ability to record in low light conditions, as I understood that it was an area of weakness in the original Q3. One of the things I *really* like about the Q3 reviews so far is that unlike most camera 'phones and a lot of digi cams, it doesn't distort loud music. Watch this vid from 1.15 The guy is beating the poop out of his kit and there's no break up. That would be excellent for me when recording rehearsals (in stereo too) direct to the Q3HD. Thanks for the review HJ!
9. Ahhh! ha ha ha! Yes, we had lots of fun with the 110 at the EA bash that's for sure! Well, I'm weighing up a couple of other purchases at the moment but haven't forgotten about a combo for teaching etc. I'll move the post to the amp section for ya too!
10.
Have you been peeking at EBS freaks GB rumour dood?
Hmmm, nooo.. I don't think I've seen it. Does he do the same?
11.
With this and the EB Gamechanger...does this mean that manufacturers are starting to run out of ideas for useful improvements that they can make to products?
I wonder if they have gotten to a point where they can't make them any lighter, so the next step is to use the existing D Class technology and make them louder?
12. Interesting! Yeah, I'd agree with what has been said above about the bass then feeling a bit top heavy? On a similar note though and a complete revelation for me is that I've moved the strap button on the bum end of the bass down to the lower part of the body. I've found that by anchoring the bass in opposite 'corners' (i.e. upper horn and the other nearer the jack socket) my bass definitely stays locked in position and far more stable against my body when I play. Also far more 'upright' because my little beer belly alien can't push it out the way! Kinda hard to describe without pictures, but hopefully you understand what I mean! I recommend it, especially if you set your strap height such that your bass is in the same place whether sitting down or stood up. I've also left the original strap button on the bum end too, so that if the bass is stood up against an amp etc, then the body doesn't touch the floor. The buttons act as little feet!
13. I think the point is that we have established that boiling a string isn't in anyway going to restore a string to it's 'fresh out of the packet state'. Yes, after hours (and in some people's cases years) of use it has become stretched and damaged - however for those who kill strings with sweat in maybe a gig or two gigs worth of playing, boiling has proved to restore a bit of that new string zing temporarily. For those on a serious budget that can not afford new strings every month, it's a way of wringing every last bit of life out of them! I used to to it all the time when I was skint. I didn't care for the physics of it all back then.
14.
All in the X3 appears to be more or less the same as the XT but with a few bell and whistles, the main one being that it can run two channels simultaneously, but I'm hearing that it sounds awful...
I've owned the Bass XT Pro and X3 live and would have to say there are many differences between the two. I'd have to say that either unit can sound awful if it isn't set up properly! Being able to run and mix two completely separate signal paths together is actually genius and is a massive improvement over the XT. - For those who like doing Chris Wolstenholme / Justin Chancellor impressions - I think this is one of the most effective ways of doing it without buying tons of gear - therefore, cheaper! - It sounds very good too, in stereo. Don't forget that the X3 isn't *just* about Bass. It has inputs on the back for Vocals. Keyboards, Variax guitar, electric Guitar and of course Bass - So the X3 can be used as an interface to record all of those instruments too as it features simulations of well known studio desks and a whole host of outboard effects. Something the XT can not do. Infact, to take it a step further, you can set up one signal path for vocals and one for acoustic guitar, each with their own effects on AND run them both at the same time in to two different channels on the PA!! Ultimately it's horses for courses and would be a waste to buy it if you are the kinda person who uses just one sound - but for those who like to have a hardware palllete that they can use for recording, live and writing on multiple instruments then it's great.

Free DAWs

I'm confuzzed! You can carry on using Reaper for free completely unlimited after 30 days - you just get a nag for 10 seconds asking you to register. Why not carry on until you *can* buy a license. To be honest, I would stick with Reaper, as you wont have to relearn another DAW. - annnnnnnd Reaper is bloody brilliant!
16. I tested the dishwasher theory the other day for a laugh.. I can confirm it works too!
17. Oh and they must be Cryogenically treated too...
18. Do they also sell NOS Pre-CBS Kluson Mullard CIJ fuses too? I want a set so that I can have all that Mojo in my HiFi tone too.
19. I wonder if the Blacksmith will have a 'Staccato 51' voiced version out too - in red no doubt! ;o)
20. Yep, AxeFX has one or two Bass models as far as I know, but the Line6 has a greater array of amp and cabinet combinations. Interestingly, the new line 6 HD processors don't have any Bass models on board.
21. When it comes to running workshops and clinics, it always helps to be able to travel as light as possible. It has got me thinking about what gear I take with me for sessions and that sometimes I require some kind of full range amplification too. I realise the obvious answer to my question would be to just get a pair of (or one) active / powered PA cabinet, end of. That could well be what I do as the inputs would allow me to plug in my laptop to play music through as well as bass guitar. Doesn't stop me pondering over which bass cabinets would be good for audio though eh? Especially if I want to use the same gear to crank up loudly so that I can be heard over a drummer. I've already had a chit-chat with 'The Funk' about his Acme bass cabinets as I think they would be pretty ace and I hear that people have used them as PA cabs on TalkBass. What else is out there? Accugroove 1x10 / 1x12? What about EA? Barefaced?
22. Yeah, the X3 really is a nice piece of kit and it can certainly do a great deal when it is set up properly. For the money, it's definitely worth it. Yes, the AxeFX is a monster, but it does depend on how deep your pockets are, at £1600 it's unreachable for some people in comparison to the price of the feature rich X3 Live. Ultimately you need to ask yourself what you actually need from an effects unit - For me, the ability to record with the unit was a total winner, especially as you can do a lot of 're-amping' techniques on board without any other gear. Brilliant. Do it!
23.
Hi guys, thanks for the recommendations of the pedals, but the problem with me is if i get one pedal, it'll lead to 2, to 3, to 4 and so on and i don't want to go using pedals as I prefer my rack setup. I may have got one sorted as long as i can get the money together (and a bigger rack case) but other recommendations are still welcome
In that case, the TC C300 is the equivalent to the pedal with more features. I've recommended it on other compressor threads before with more details.
