I like your style my friend. Many of the reasons so far given not to buy - wake the dead, blow out doors - seem like great reasons to me.
Why thank you sir! Same here!
Plus, packing 1000W in the back end, there's a chance you'll be able to get closer to the kind of volume the 500 produces running flat out, but with the preamp still set to clean-ish, thereby making it a bit more versatile.
Yep, I'm running a Hartke LH1000 which is just a stonkingly powerful and very clean head. I'm willing to put a few pennies on there being similarities in the OTB and LH preamps too.. tonestack Eq per chance? Interestingly, it's actually an amp design I'd been looking for and way back when actually contacted Trace Elliot to ask why they hadn't paired their fantastic V-Type preamp with a 1000W D/H class power section. Iirc the reply was that it probably wouldn't sell. Seems they missed a trick. Both the LH and OTB are very popular (even tho the LH is a standard AB MOSFET) So mr amp manufacturers, I like to lay down the gauntlet.. Let's cram all that in a 1u case please! (ok, so Hevos have already, and MarkBass managed 500w in the F1/F500).

I set my strap sat down, so that when I stand up, the Bass stays in exactly the same position. If I practice something that requires a bit of extra effort or dexterity whilst I am sat at home, i want to minimise any changes that i make to finger positions or posture when I'm on stage. If the Bass hasn't moved position then, even if it's purely psychosomatic, I'm more likely to nail the passage live! Besides, I can't play tech metal with the Bass below my nether regions anyway!!

1000W in 5Kg for less than 600 notes? Now that kinda spec is Dood territory!

Good idea, I'm @DoodOnBass. My other networks are in my sig.
not actually sure about how to work out the 'pro' series serial number but they're definitly a post gibson takeover line of basses. they're fairly recent, early to mid 2000's (i think i bought mine in 2003?), made in korea to the gibson/tobias design, sold through a company called musicyo for a few years then they disapeared! i've owned a couple, still own one that i really like.
Beat me to it, yep agree with this one. I had a red MusicYo Toby 6er and a Natural 6er that came from The Bass Centre. Cracking basses!

I once received a bass wrapped in one sheet of bubble wrap and a bin bag, no case!!! On another occasion I received a bass cabinet squeezed in to a single skin cardboard box. Both were delivered by courier. I am truly amazed that they arrived in one piece as these are truly two examples on how not to send items in the post! A good guide for how much packaging you actually need, is to take in to consideration the amount of packaging and support you might get in the box of say a microwave oven, laptop or for bigger items, TV.

Just bought a snare drum stand from Nick. Fast comms and great to deal with!

A semi tonal discrepancy.. I like this! Wait for the chorus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UWtcSvtiQw...be_gdata_player Interestingly, some people I've played this to, just didn't 'get' it.
Sorry if this has come up before. Anyone played along to this? Does it sound out of tune to you? It's in a set of stuff I'm doing for a new project. I thought my bass was out of tune but checked and it was fine. Had one of those 'Jumpin Jack Flash' moments when you play along with the original and it doesn't seem to be quite in proper key but not an entire semitone out either. Maybe they were still messing about with tape speeds even in the 80's....
Away yes, I remember! The joys of learning songs from cassette tape - which made songs appear out of tune if the player was a bit fast or slow! Infact, there's a substantial amount of material originally mastered from tape to CD that is off pitch. I'll have to listen to it again, but I'm pretty sure the original recording of Another Ones Bites The Dust by Queen is sharp towards F.

I too have ran an MB F1 and RH450 in the same rig together. At the time I was using sealed cabs and found that the RH didnt work well wit those cabs. I'd liked to have tried the RH and definitely the Staccato now I'm back using big fat stinking ported cabs again to see if that would have been a better configuration. I sold the RH and still have my F1 as a back up/ practice amp. To my ears, I preferred the F1 as I found that i couldn't do what I wanted with the Eq. The bass centre frequency was just to high and I found the top end roll off on the RH to be annoying too. In the mix is wasn't really a problem, but you know when something bugs you, you just can't seem to shake it? Again, I would have liked to have given the Staccato a whirl at the time, but when it comes to great tone and brute force to be reckoned with, my Hartke LH is a beast. As for trying to get the two to sound the same, well yeah I had to Eq them both to flat and tweak to get in a similar ball park, but the differences in Eq config (built in curve on the RH) made it difficult to get them exactly the same. I agree that the RH has a darker less pristine tone and really like the F1's Eq centres, 40hz for bottom and 10khz for tops.
His playing is unquestionably some of the greatest technique I have ever seen. Great feel and dynamic control, and the tone, Oh the tone! Hurry up, Dood!!!!
It's kinda out of my hands, but I will keep an eye on proceedings and keep everyone posted! -
Once again, congratulations Dan, you looked well chuffed at the clinic and rightly so, having just watched Dave and Frank play through pretty much the same amp and cabinet combination! Very nice indeed, Larry will be pleased to hear from you I am sure! Infect, I'll tell him about this post!
Nice work, Dood! I'd be interested to see these interviews... I used to really like Ellefson's playing when I was younger - the little intro to "Peace Sells" is still kicking around in my head, even now
I'll definitely post a link to the interview pages when they are up, but It may take a little while until they are ready, so hang in there! -
Oh, just checked and my JamMan does have a couple of scratches on either side but no markings top or bottom. The rubber feet aren't even worn! The pedal has never been gigged, but I have used it for the odd workshop. Everything else has been home use for teaching. Reviews are all positive, let me tell you a bit about the unit. You can connect pretty much anything to the looper, guitars, keys, drum machines and even microphones with it's dedicated mic preamp and XLR input. I like the fact that the pedal has multiple outputs, so for example you can feed a click track in to a set of earphones to help you keep time, but you can stop the click from being heard through amp or PA. The unit features stereo in and outputs with separate level controls for the rhythm, loop or direct levels. Each loop can be saved in to 99 separate memory locations on board, or another 99 by plugging in an SD card. Loopsmcan be moved between the two easily or copied back and forth using USB and a computer. Oh.. And loops can also be MP3 backing tracks that can be played out to a stereo PA! And speaking of MP3s, if you are having trouble learning a tricky song, the JamMan can adjust the speed of a track but maintain it's pitch to make learning easier! There's tons more that the pedal can do, worth taking a look at Digitech.com for more info!
Did Dood and Dave call each other to match outfits? :-)
Yeah, Dave kept calling up incessantly, asking what I was gonna wear and promised that he wouldn't match, but the lil scamp couldn't help himself! Coincidentally, I seem to have worn the black and blue combo for a few of my videos, but honestly not planned! I guess I need a wardrobe makeover! -
I thought they show was great and the set choice was, in the whole, very good. I was disappointed with Les's lack of communication to the audience. He spoke a bit here and there, but has a reputation of lots of very funny interaction which I hoped to of been treated to. The big let down was the venue sound. Very boomy, like the sound system was not cut out for the size (or height) of the room. The mid was all snare drum until half waythrough and we only really got treated to a good guitar sound for the encore! When they got it right, it sounded massive, but it took most the gig before the soundmen decided to tweak.. Shame. Still enjoyed it lots, was cool to hook up with Robbie (RIM basses) and Dood, and the show was very enjoyable. Let's not mention 'Hot Head Show's opening slot though... Urghhhh.
Great to see you too mate! Sadly I couldn't open the picture you mms'd me, I assume it was of the accommodation you spoke of? Still amazed that you spotted me from right across the other side of the venue. Do I *really* stick out like a sore thumb that much ha ha ha ha! Yup, had a quick hello to Robbie too, I have to admit that after the three hour trip down, I really needed a drink and sadly my conversation skills sucked. sorry Robbie! Gig though, yeah it was strange that there wasn't any front lighting and thus couldntbsee the whites of their eyes.
You're welcome to mine, Dood, I wasn't a fan!
Heh! Im guessing its gonna have a similar effect that Marmite does on people!
I'm always in awe of the amount of comments pointing fingers at endorsees and claiming they're mindlessly biased towards the product simple because of the discount. Put simply, if you're happy to put your name behind a brand that you don't like enough to recommend anyway, then your opinion probably isn't worth listening to in the first place. I don't think a lot of people understand exactly what an endorsement entails, most people seem to think that there's a clause in the contract that outlines exactly how far up the manufacturer's arse the endorsee's tongue needs to be and that's just not how it works. If you found your ideal piece of gear and you got offered a discount on it (or even free), you'd be stupid not to take it. It doesn't suddenly make your opinion unreliable or biased. Having said that, it doesn't make much sense to have an endorsee reviewing gear they endorse as obviousy they like it or they wouldn't be an endorsee. As for the original question of who is endorsing who, IMO it's a mutual endorsement. The manufacturer is endorsing the band by saying "we're proud that this band is using out gear" and the band is endorsing the manufacturer by saying "we're proud to be using this gear". All IMO, IME, YMMV etc etc, but my band has various endorsements, I know a far bit about GK amps and really do like them so I often suggest them and it winds me up to think that people think I'm biased because of my endorsement. A ) I turned down another endorsement to keep using my paid for GK amp before the endorsement and B ) there's other products I talk about that I'm not endorsed by (Sandberg being the prime example). If I'm biased towards GK gear (which I am) it's a because they're a damned fine product that I would (and did) use regardless of endorsement.
Nice post.
I wrote a blog post about this, after being asked loads of questions about Endorsements - it's 5 or 6 years old, but pretty much still makes sense... the question of who's endorsing who is a really good one - ideally it's a two way thing. You play the gear you love, and the company - grateful for the exposure and support - reciprocate with the kind of support they can offer, with cheaper equipment, gear shipped to venues, loaner gear, adverts (which are definitely a bonus for both parties)... Anyway, here's the post, hope it's of some use: http://www.stevelawson.net/2006/10/how_music_gear_/ Steve
Hey Steve, hope ya had a safe trip back! Thats a great piece and saved me a bit of typing as you have explained it far better than i would have. I wanted to make a point about the other 'features' of endorsements and touched on company support in my last post. You've added plenty more detail in reference to.
Bugger all these bass endorsements. Have you guys tried Lea & Perrins' Worcestershire Sauce? God, it's yummy. Particulary with cheese. And celery, too. Surprising that, eh? Who'd have thought that Lea & Perrins' Worcestershire Sauce could be so versatile?
I wanna get my mits on some of that HP Guinness sauce!
PS: Dood wins the "Devil's Advocate" award, methinks!
I was just so gobsmacked, I couldn't bring myself to answer! -
Guaranteed to get the discussion heated in seconds: http://www.facebook.com/notes/jeff-berlin/...248767481801782
Jason Charles Rogers said, “I love that feeling of a fretted bass with that kind of sound!” Jeff answered: I don't play fretless at all because I personally regard it as a cliche instrument! I've never heard a fretless bass player sound unique in their fretless sound since Jaco Pastorius. To me, this makes their musical contributions fall into the imitator status, something that many still do because their fans don't seem to mind the musical imitation element connected with their favorite fretless players. I recognize that I am pretty much alone in my point of view about fretless (what aren't I almost alone in!) The reason is that the fretless bass has a tone automatically built into it and that the tone was copyrighted when Jaco first presented it. But the fretted bass had no original sonic stamp attributed to one guy. Neither does piano, drums, guitar, or horn have anyone who is THE definer of that instrument’s sound. These are generic instruments which have a legion of unique voices, different in sonics from each other as an orange is from an apple. But so far, the fretless bass is ONLY an orange and everyone who plays it always includes that specific fretless sound, nearly impossible to avoid, and so far, nobody hasn't, not to my way of looking at it! They are all out of tune or they slide harmonics, or they play harmonics, or they slide notes. Nothing different here!
Err... Discuss, I reckon...
Its more often than not an 'artist deal' where the manufacturer is selling direct to the player at about trade price. They still get paid the same for their gear as it's the retailers fee that's left of the price the player pays. Im guessing not many people get an endorsement in the old fashioned meaning of 'free gear for publicity'. I don't know though and would be interested in hearing from people with these deals.
Sorting the wheat from the chaff, you've made the distinction. There are big differences in deals and *some* companies.. or rather, too many are offering a glorified trade deal, where that's as far as it goes. Which is all fine and dandy for most people, but I'm pretty sure that if you were to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere on tour and you called upon them for help, they'd probably chuckle and ask how deep your pockets are. I'm fortunate in that I had been using all of the products loooooong before any contact from the companies themselves, tried and tested. (as many of you will no doubt know I was blathering on about my gear back in the days of Bassworld!!) I am very pleased and chuffed to bits to say that pretty much all of them contacted me to offer me on to their roster in support of my music career. That's not BS either, i know that I can talk to say, Jason How or Larry Hartke anytime I need to and they are there for me - and in return I get to tell everyone what I honestly think of the brands - which thankfully for them is positive, else, I wouldn't use 'em heh heh!!! - and boy have I owned a lot of kit over the years. So, in short there are different deals out in the wild and some to be wary of - but companies aren't stupid, they're not going to give 'free stuff' away out of the kindness of their hearts - we're all in business - and theirs, bottom line, like it or not is to make money. Then again... so is mine.
